SELF-REFLECTION
During this project, I improved my skills with Aftereffects and also my drawing skills. Having to draw multiple storyboards that would be critiqued by other people also pushed me to generate interesting and diverse ideas, which was something I struggled with in previous independent projects. I think the team dynamic worked in the way that it was nice to have someone with a different style and outside view critiquing my work and presenting improvements that I wouldn’t have thought of in the first place.
The things that could have been handled better was probably our ideation at the start. We were indecisive and divided due to our differing design styles and concepts in the initial stages, which caused us to stall in the ideation stage for awhile. I think it would have also been better if I was more involved in the poster concepts and if Amber had more time left for developing the website, but it’s understandable with the time constraints we had. In the end, we still ended up with results that we can be proud of.

WEEK SIX / THURSDAY CLASS.
17 OCT 2019.
We got our website wireframe and video walkthrough done last night, with some last minute font changes and tweaks on the page links.
I made sure to arrive early at uni to prepare for the presentation. We had some last minute crisis with packaging the Indesign file and fonts, but that was sorted after some patience. Our presentation went well with some nice people giving back encouraging feedback, especially with our motion graphic. It was also really satisfying to look at the amalgamation of our six week efforts all at one. Definitely a project we can be proud of.

WEEK SIX / MONDAY CLASS.
14 OCT 2019.
We had some problems with the Indesign file while doing some final tweaking, so I had to race over to Victoria University since the file wasn’t valid on the Indesign on Massey University. Finally we got a pdf to send to Toystore that we’re happy with.
I’m still waiting on Amber to do her developments on the website wireframe, but I’m confident we’ll be able to get it completed by the deadline.

WEEK FIVE / THURSDAY CLASS.
7 OCT 2019.
I was absent in class today, but I collected some existing posters as artist precedents for Amber to look at and developed the website wireframe with a grid system, images, and copy text.
During the weekend, I refined the poster with copy text and a grid system, while Amber took the website. By the end of the day we were able to send in the poster for Toystore print. It’s a relief to have both the poster and the motion graphics completed, and now all we have to focus on is the website.

WEEK FIVE / MONDAY CLASS.
3 OCT 2019.
We completed the second animatic and overlaid the glitch effects on both of them; our motion graphics are looking pretty good. We also drafted up a website wireframe in class, with some variations that we critiqued and refined together. It feels like a productive stage in our long project, so I’m satisfied with today.
We agreed to split the workload where Amber did the poster concepts and I completed the website wireframe on XD, and swap each other’s work for development.

WEEK FOUR / THURSDAY CLASS.
30 SEP 2019.
Today was mostly admin work with getting all our work on our blogs. We’ve got an animatic and a bit, and to make up for today we’ll meet up in the weekend to finalise audio and the animatics.
I got some critique back for my animatic – our narrative is finally shaping up to something interesting and able to be interpreted, but needs to be clarified just a little better in the medium of a motion graphic. I’ll make some small changes to my animatic and keep Amber up to date with what we need to achieve by next week.

WEEK THREE / MONDAY CLASS.
23 SEP 2019.
We managed to finalize a storyboard in the weekend, as well as a revision of our narrative. After compiling the key stages of our workflow into slides for the interim presentation, our project direction felt clearer – I think looking at our project start to finish helped me eliminate any tangents in my mind.
We got some good critique from another group, which gave us clear things to work on for next class. My partner and I agreed on working on an animatic each for next class.

WEEK TWO / THURSDAY CLASS.
19 SEP 2019.
Today, we presented our storyboards to each other. It was slightly frustrating because my partner didn’t bring any storyboards to class but didn’t like any of the storyboards I presented. Usually, I would be okay with this, if only we had another idea we could agree on, but by the end of the class we were let sort of at loose ends. This just means we’ll have to make up for this in the weekend.
The animation lecture was very interesting, and definitely something to consider with making our motion graphic. It’d be good to research/rewatch the animation basics video as well as some Aftereffects tutorials.

WEEK TWO / MONDAY CLASS.
16 SEP 2019.
Today was slightly confusing, only because when my partner and I discussed our moodboards and artist precedents in class, we discovered we had quite differing ideas in our head. However, we took this and tried to merge ideas and aesthetics, which was interesting with Amber’s popart-vaporwave ideas and my monochromatic palettes-nature ideas.
The digital/vaporwave aesthetic was something Amber was adamant on, so we decided to center our project on that, and just borrow transitions from my moodboards.
We also put together some moodboards that indicated our aesthetic approach and narrative approach. This was extremely helpful in clarifying what narrative we were going for, as there were some miscommunications before that led us to very different moodboards.

WEEK ONE / THURSDAY CLASS.
12 SEP 2019.
Today was productive! As a pair, Amber and I agreed to base our season off Nature of Man, Little Things, and Peaceful Man. The themes of humanity/what it meant to be human appealed to us, and we even brainstormed a season name: ‘Red Moon’.
At the end of the class, we set up a trello and divided up the tasks that we have to complete in time for next Monday’s class. I feel better about this project than the first day as now we have something to work on and a direction to move forwards in.

WEEK ONE / MONDAY CLASS.
9 SEP 2019.
Today was an interesting introduction into the course. After getting into pairs, we drew up quick posters on the theme of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and a topic (ours was ‘anime’). It was hard generating a persuasive rhetoric on the spot, and it was definitely something I struggled with in the last project.

WEEK 6 / RATIONALE.
For my poster project, I focused on the inequality found between dominant and non-dominant historical narratives taught in New Zealand curriculums. Namely, the dominant Eurocentric narrative versus the lesser emphasized narratives about historical people of colour.
Through the project, my topic was refined from a broader concept to something more specific. In the end, the figurehead of my poster became Meri Mangakāhia, the first woman to campaign for women’s rights in New Zealand. The wehi of my posters is in the theme of redaction, with the ihi being the sense of wrongness of something being missing. The first rhetoric I wanted to approach was Mangakāhia’s absence in known New Zealand history compared side-by-side with Kate Sheppard’s well-known reputation - this confronted the viewer with the disparity between the two figures. My second rhetoric presented Mangakāhia as a person of power (haloed and central in the composition) but with a small but important part of her imagery hidden (her eyes) - this challenged the viewer to want to know more about who Meri Mangakāhia was.
If I was to do this project again, I would like to have changed my copy text. I struggled with putting my concept into words. In hindsight, I would have like to explore more diversity in typography options, maybe choosing to handwrite/draw the title. Overall, I’m quite satisfied to see how my posters had developed from my initial concepts and I feel like my topic of inequality was worthwhile to explore.

WEEK 6 / POSTER DEVELOPMENT.
Poster 1 (left): I carried over the ideas of the white lines obscuring the eyes and made them into the marker lines you see on redacted documents. I used the diagonal lines in the background to draw the eye across the page from top to the copy text on the bottom right.
Poster 2 (right): I carried over the idea of comparing a representation of Kate Sheppard and Meri Mangakāhia, but did away with the illustration style as it wasn’t a strength of mine and I couldn’t convey the idea well through it. I wanted to go for a strong background colour in this concept to really catch the eyes and draw the eye to the black of the book in the center.

WEEK 5 / POSTER DEVELOPMENT.
I decided to go for to different image styles; one illustration and one photographic. At this point of the process, I was sure that I wanted to communicate the concept of dominant Eurocentric narrative versus narrative of people of colour in taught New Zealand history. I tried to communicate this in the first one by comparing Meri Mangakāhia to Kate Sheppard.
FEEDBACK
Illustration style poster: The representation of Kate Sheppard is recognisable, but the idea of ‘inequality’ needs to be communicated more clearly in the illustration i.e. making Kate bigger in scale or blocking/pushing Mangakāhia away. The colours of the illustration work - consider a stronger background colour to catch the eye. The copy text alignment works really well with the break in the title text and the paragraph text underneath.
Photographic style poster: Lone subject makes the composition very strong, good colour with the image of Mangakāhia + halo in the background is a good touch. The white lines really emphasise the idea of obscuring that I’m trying to comunnicate, and really draws the eye. Copy text looks a little too bulky in this alignment, reconsider rearranging or cutting down. Change background colour to something stronger.
