You have got to stop referring to video games, fiction, drawings, etc. as "CSAM."

This defeats the entire purpose of the term "CSAM" (child sexual abuse material) which is that it's material of a child being sexually abused. The term was coined by anti-CSAM advocates because this material was being called "child porn," and it's not "porn." "Porn" generally refers to fiction, and CSAM is not fiction. It's real footage of real children being really abused.

"CSAM" is to "child abuse" as "snuff film" is to "murder." It is real filmed violence against a real human person. Games/drawings/fiction depiction child abuse as a plot point in a work of fiction are to child abuse as, e.g., murder mysteries are to murder. It's a fictional story in a fictional medium. No real human people are harmed in its production. You can argue -- and many people do -- about whether the fictional depiction "sends a bad message" or whatever, but it is not, literally, a snuff film or CSAM.

Referring to fiction as "CSAM" not only needlessly gives cover to moral panic and censorship; it also completely dilutes the harm of CSAM. The harm of CSAM is not that it's morally bad media that sends a bad message. The harm is that real human people are abused in its production.

Another thing about the Iliad and the odyssey that always gets me excited because I’m a nerd is that if you pay close attention you can find stuff that’s a remnant from Mycenaean Greece before what we typically think of as Ancient Greece.

For example the Greeks are frequently referred to as “long haired” when everybody knows that by the time that we usually think of as Ancient Greece men usually had short hair.

Something that’s a bit harder to catch unless you know what to listen out for is all the cows. There’s so much cattle in this book but by the time of Homer people were already more into using goats.

enough. stop with the shock value. there is no need to insert THE CREATURE; the benign concept of such a world is horrifying enough. not even in urgency, but just in banal, everyday interaction. imagine you meet someone and their timer says two years. not tomorrow, not urgently soon, but two years. enough to do quite a lot. they could fall in love in that time - could they get engaged? have a baby? you might otherwise get to know them, befriend them, but perhaps you opt not to, make a conscious choice not to invest in your own grief. what balancing act would every individual person have to participate in - I have ten years, is that long enough to be a good mother to children? is that long enough to secure a caretaker for my own mother? my wife will die a few months before me. my newborn’s timer reads nineteen years.

Does anyone else think that it's weird how much the whole "the difference between introverts and extroverts is that introverts recharge their energy by being alone and extroverts recharge their energy by spending time with people" thing is taken at face value and treated as if it has any scientific backing?

Like "introvert" and "extrovert" probably have value as descriptive labels to categorize certain behaviors, but I've never encountered any evidence for the idea that what causes you to fall into either one of these categories is some sort of inherent ontological quality that determines whether spending time with people gives you ~energy~ or drains it from you being anything other than pseudoscience pop psychology bunk.
