Too many artists are held back by outdated and bad color theory rules, or even rules that are fine but have built in limitations that you should know and I want to set everyone free.

Assassin Bug Nymphs: these insects create their own camouflage by covering their bodies with dirt, debris, and the corpses of other insects
Tumblr media
As nymphs, many of the assassin bugs in subfamily Reduviinae use bits of debris to camouflage themselves, and some even collect the carcasses of the insects that they've killed. They primarily prey upon ants, but they've also been known to hunt small beetles, katydids, and flies.

Some nymphs cover their entire bodies with soil, dust, and bits of vegetation, while others use only the carcasses of other insects, stacking the corpses together on their backs; some of them do a little bit of both, using fine debris to cover themselves and then adding the carcasses to complete the effect. This tactic is often referred to as "corpse camouflage."

The carcasses help to mask the nymph's scent and appearance, protecting it from predators and allowing it to sneak up on its prey without being detected.

This article describes how one species, Acanthaspis petax, kills its prey and then collects the empty bits of exoskeleton:
Like other assassin bugs, it hunts its prey by piercing it with its proboscis, injecting paralysis-inducing saliva and an enzyme that dissolves tissue, then sucking out the innards. But unlike other bugs, it then fashions empty ant exoskeletons into protective outerwear. The insect can carry as many as 20 dead ants at a time, and binds them together with a sticky excretion into a cluster that may be larger than its own body.
This camouflaging behavior occurs only during the nymphal stage of development.
