cavalier as an identity in tlt is a gross fascination of mine. because the ideal of it is noble and swoonworthy and alluring it sells you the promise of being complete. a pair working on tandum, united for the same goal, two bodies one soul ect. but then you watch it function and its like.

no thats the propaganda of an empire that relies on its strongest soldiers to have a drift compatiable aoul to eat. theyre not sharing a goal usually, theyre just united in the necromancers goal. the fedelity is the crux of it, the love has to be there, we've seen with ianthe how hard the transition is with someone whos even kind of unwilling, who wont submit. its subjugation. it is demonstrative of what the empire thinks of bodies, of those who cannot control death themselves- at their most useful when theyre not dead. all menial labor is relegated to skeletons. skeletons dont complain, dont need sick days, dont eat, dont sleep

anyway when you talk about being a cavalier as an identity in terms of gideon its like. she IS non conforming, she is "butch" in the terms of that universe, she hates the ninth she hates bones she hates harrow. but she is still really really into the idea of dying in such a spectacular way that everyone is forced to acknowledge how cool she is. she was opposed to being harrows cavalier because it was *harrow*- shed have to submit to her fully, mind and body. to be a good cav is complete subservience, doing whatever the necromancer asks not just because its your duty, but because you innately and subconsciously understand the needs of your adept to the point that there is no other option in your mind.

gideon couldnt fight harrows siphoning during the avulsion trial, because that would kill harrow, which would be bad. gideon had to let harrow into her mind during winnowing, completely fucking up her sensory awareness, because failing this trial means harrow cant get the key and learn the secrets of being a lyctor, which would be bad. it always comes back to harrow, in its grossly romantically tragic totality. gideon has to hack off pieces of herself, her stubborness, her onstinct to disobey, her physical limits for pain, her dreams of the cohort, all to reach the gold standard of a cav, which she passes with flying colors.

anyway in gideons case is being a cav butch or is it forcefem. discuss
