5. what team do you support and why?

For AFL, I'm a Lions supporter!

I was raised in a warring household: dad was a magpies guy through and through, and mum was a Lions supporter (she didn't follow AFL until she met my dad in the late 90s, and picked them in 99 bc she had a friend who played for the Bears). Thing was, AFL was considered ...er.... non-favourably where I grew up in north QLD, so I didn't have to really 'pick a side' between the two because I couldn't go to games, and no one cared at all. When I moved to Brisbane in 2014, I had to finally pledge my allegiance to one of those teams. Pies were recently off a premiership a few years before and Lions? Well they just sacked their coach and had one of their worst seasons on record, so it should've been a clear-cut decision.

My dad screwed up though. He raised me to always believe in and support an underdog through thick and thin. I looked at the dumpster fire that was the Lions of 2014 and my heart was lost to them forever.

(...plus memberships were dirt cheap considering they were BEGGING people to support the lions during that time, and I was a broke uni student so it was win-lose-win)

11. what's a sports moment that lives in your head rent free?

There are two from recent memory, and they're hard to choose between so I'll do both.

The first is actually from test cricket - Sam Konstas' debut specifically. Jasprit Bumrah all BGT had our number, and then this lil 19 year old comes out and ramps him? That morning will always be burned in my brain.

The second is from the GWS-Brisbane semi-final last year, and its not necessarily an on-field moment so I'll give you a two-fer. That entire final was like our season in a nutshell - terrible in the first half, and yet when all hope seemed lost, we rallied and somehow made it to the finals. Anyway we're 44 points down with 8 minutes to go in the third quarter. No way we could comeback from that. and then Kai Lohmann borks the man on the mark??? And gets the goal??? and that sets off the whole chain reaction, but in that moment the fuckin. AUDACITY.

Most supporters like me were treating this run as a free hit - we didn't expect to win anything. Anyway we have this dramatic comeback, and Joe kicks the goal to bring us almost even in circumstances that only Joe Daniher could be create. Ironically, I was much more nervous about the second, much easier goal to put us in front. I was watching the game at a bar with a bunch of other lions supporters and the place went wild. Tensions were so high throughout the game, that when the final siren sounded it was just. noise. and then? the normal bar entertainment/live singer turns back up what he was doing, except.... he brings out country roads. I had never heard or been a part of a more sincere heartfelt singing of John Denver until that moment.

I even have a video of that moment it if anyone would like to see it!
