I haven’t thought this through entirely, but…despite being very male-centric—in fact, because it is very male-centric—Our Flag Means Death is a very feminist show. It engages directly with issues of toxic masculinity and the misogyny that is at the base of homophobia. It criticizes patriarchal structures and heteronormative requirements. It unpacks compulsory heterosexuality and frames it as something that damages everyone (the portrayal of Mary Allamby Bonnet is very important within this argument). It interrogates how women participate in and act as gatekeepers of patriarchy. The show focuses a lot (but not exclusively) on men, and avoids using women as the saviors of men. There's no use of female characters to educate men on how to be good—the men work through their issues themselves and everyone involved is trapped within the same damaging systems.
This is why I think we ignore misogynist language or misinterpret explicitly misogynist characters to our detriment. Izzy and Jack and Nigel and Chauncey are all explicitly misogynist, and there’s a deliberate way they use sexist language to denigrate femme characters (primarily Stede and Lucius, but even Ed and the rest of the crew, and Ricky). Zheng herself utilizes misogyny in the denigration of “soft” men (which also is self-hatred: she despises the softness within herself).
I'd love to hear other thoughts on this, though.

weird as fuck living in a culture where it's considered more impolite to speak up and defend yourself against someone treating you unfairly than it is for someone to be rude to you in the first place

Listen my dudes Ancient Egypt existed for a really fuckass long time. Literally just Pharaonic civilization lasted 3,000 years. That’s not even including predynastic civilization and Roman rule. If you lump that in you’re looking at more like… 5,000 years. Like. If you want a comparison of how long that is: THE YEAR IS CURRENTLY 2018. TWO THOUSAND. TWO-THIRDS OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN PHARAONIC CIVILIZATION HAVE HAPPENED SINCE THE ‘BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST’ We comparatively just entered the Third Intermediate Period. The Greeks will not take over for another 700~ years. Cleopatra will not be born until the year 2931.
It’s a really long time guys.

anyway just a reminder for the myth lovers out there
king arthur was welsh. merlin was welsh. camelot was in wales. the lady and the lake she pops out of; welsh. excalibur; magic inanimate welsh object. etc.
on the way to see family, i drive past a lake that in which is welsh legend, is the last resting place of excalibur.
i’m just saying in my experience a lot of these legends had been so anglo-fied in the past and it’s like, all this cool shit is celtic welsh legend.
