kingdom hearts and the somewhat funny concept of """side games"""

i'm of the opinion that kingdom hearts' story is not complicated, or at least it doesn't GET complicated for a while. (i'm not a masters of masters stan)

yet something that always perplexed me in this franchise is its very particular view of "side" games. in most franchises, you'd expect a handheld game that released on nintendo consoles to be either irrelevant or non-crucial to a series whose main entries are on playstation system. but that is not the nomura way.

so i thought, y'know what, let's list the kh side games and see how skippable they are and how they contribute to the story of the saga at large

(spoilers for the entire series oops)

(Re:) Chain Of Memories

Story placement : Between 1 and 2

Skippable ? : [■■□□□] → I don't recommend it

Story significance : [■■■■□] → Pretty important

so chain of memories is our first side game and already the concept of it being a side game evaporates. (i don't count re:CoM's existence as being the proof it's a home console main entry as it released after 2 AND for some of us unlucky fuckers, only on HD collections)

chain of memories is a whole ass adventure and an important part as it introduces the organization XIII, nobodies (sort of), and pretty much everything else that you will either need or greatly appreciate knowing for 2's prologue and other story beats.

is 2 understandable without CoM ? sure ! the game does its best to reintroduce you to those things as soon as you're in control of Sora as he too has to rediscover all of those things. but not only will playing CoM give you a headstart when playing as Sora, it's half of the knowledge required to not make the prologue a huge "???" moment.

fun point tho : all of this only applies to the castle oblivion sections of the game imo. the worlds are largely skippable, except for that one twillight town jumpscare

358/2 Days

Story placement : Between 1 and 2, is parallel to CoM at some point

ok this one might be bold but hear me out.

this game has you in roxas' shoes during his time in the organization, and it's honestly very cool to me to live in their ranks for a while, esp in the non-HD, cutscene compilations version.

but here's the thing : i don't think anything this game teaches you that 2FM doesn't is crucial for the series at large. it does help you a lot for the kh2 prologue, but also in a way that sort of spoils its mystery

there's the fact that xion existed and is the cause for roxas leaving the organization to begin with, i guess ??? that's the one thing 2FM doesn't tell you and that has become relevant with xion returning in 3, but aside from that, this game is to me an actual side game : filling a non-critical blank in the story

Birth by Sleep

Story placement : Before 1, but not in a distant past (sora and riku are alive and kids)

Skippable ? : [□□□□□] → no

Story significance : [■■■■■] → it's almost literally where everything starts

yeah i don't think you can skip birth by sleep.

as the almost start of the dark seeker saga, this game kicks out a LOT of the events that would play out in the series : xehanort's whole plan, riku gaining the power to wield the keyblade and wanting to exit his world, ventus merging his heart with sora ....

for anyone that played at the very least 1 and 2 and wishes to keep going, i think they have to stop and play birth by sleep. on this whole list, i think this game is the one of the twos that are as important to the story as 1 and 2

Re:Coded

Note : Coded is purposefully excluded from this discussion as it is pretty much lost media, you can't play the damn thing

Story placement : Between 2 and 3

recoded exists to make our current cast of characters aware that the bbs trio needs saving and thus bridge into dream drop distance, which is basically the content of the letter sora and riku receive at the end of 2

welcome to the official part where i think this story jumped the shark

regardless of my opinion on it, and much like birth by sleep, this is a pivotal game where major concepts are introduced in the series and it basically sets up the greater part of 3

by vertue of 3 trying its best to recap the whole series at its beginning and the fact the prologue of 3 basically picks up right after ddd, you technically CAN survive 3 without having played ddd, but i heavily discourage it as you'll have only one game to cope with time traveling xehanorts bullshit instead of the 2 that god intended

Unchained χ / Union χ / χ Back Cover

Story placement : Before 1, in the most distant past

Skippable ? : [?????] → i THINK it's fine ???

Story significance : [?????] → idk tbh

the big problem with ranking χ content is that its importance will most likely change a lot with the new upcoming saga

as for now, you can TECHNICALLY survive with just back cover content, but having knowledge of the entire χ affair allows you to have answers to questions you probably didn't even have (hi ventus). and also have more questions obviously

Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage

Story placement : Between bbs' ending until 1's ending

Skippable ? : [■■■■■] → this whole game is not needed tbh

Story significance : [■□□□□] → it helps us understand how stupid mickey is

erggggh aaaargh -suffering noises-

i don't like this story ,,,, it's basically bbs' secret episode spread across a longer experience AND tries to basically pull a blank points by linking aqua to present KH's events

except i kinda felt like blank points made me more emotional seeing aqua get to know what's happening outside and how sora is saving the worlds by ansem's words rather than just meeting mickey to maybe get out and (mickey voice) of course not lets ditch aqua in the realm of darkness riku

outside from my own disappointment at this little bonus in the 2.8 collection, it's honestly pretty ignorable as aqua's whereabouts known if you've played birth by sleep or just reach a certain point in 3 anyway, so -shrug-

Union χ Dark Road

Story placement : In the past, but like not as far as χ but also not as close as bbs Skippable ? : [■■□□□] → unless i've missed something, no crucial information FOR NOW, but interesting backstory Story significance : [■■■□□] → if you wanna see how xehanort got messed up this is the place

as the backstory of the funny χ-blade man, dark road is technically not necessary but plenty interesting to Analyze© and Dissect©

if anything i can now understand a lil more why 3 suddenly tries to pass off xehanort as a well intentionned extremist right at the fucking end of a 10 games saga despite everything indicating to the contrary -- which is a shame considering dark road released after 3

like days it has enough substance to be considered important without being necessary so good job on being an actual side game, dark road !!

on one hand, this game only exists to give us two pieces of information ("sora is in quadratum" and "riku is going there too"), buton the otherthese two pieces are pretty much the whole setup for 4 until missing link tells us more, so like ???

i'm conflicted.

Random Art Quirks or Minor Royal Details?

One thing that caught my eyes very quick when playing Dragalia, to put in brief, was Euden's. It's usually subtle, but in nearly every single piece of artwork involving him, he has a red fleck (usually) to the right side of each eye. Now, I might be inclined to dismiss that as some form of shading, but this reflects even in all his models:

But when I mean it's everywhere, I mean everywhere. Even in wyrmprints, who were made by a whole host of vastly different artists, preserve this quirk when he's close enough to the front to be able to slip in. Enough to make me think it's in his character notes or guide for artists.

...But he's not the only one with this trait in the royal family.

We've:

-Zethia

-Chelle

-And, perhaps most interestingly, Phares, as his are purple instead of red.

Nobody else has it. Leonidas' eyes are bright green enough and plenty intense as it is, Valyx's are a plain brown, Beren's are purple/pink completely, and Emile's are a bright blue. Nedrick technically fits in that he's got red and green, sure, but he's...odd in many ways, and his default eye color without all the bad Bahamut vibes seems to be like Leo's, bright green with absolutely no hint of red.

When I first looked all the royal fam after I noticed this trend (for me, Euden to Zethia to Phares), I thought, "hm, is this a sign of possession, a joke among the artists that this character is or will be possessed?" Especially because Morsayati does that 'whole eyes to red' thing, and when Zethia is possessed, where should be her red fleck turns to a green one. And maybe Phares' are purple to signify the Progenitor instead of Morsayati.

But Chelle bucks that trend entirely, escaping scot free from any such shenanigans. So what is it, for such a small trait to be so consistently portrayed in these 4's art?

First, I thought it simply might be a trait from King Dad (AKA Aurelius, in my set of nicknames I use to communicate to my best friend who never played dragalia...) But no, Aurelius does not have the red fleck, just a deep deep blue/teal.

So I looked even further back in the bloodline, and for that, I turn to King Dork, AKA Alberius, -who may be the originator of this whole quirk!

Voila! If it is a trait that's been passed down through him, I got to thinking even more. What if the colored fleck was a result of him sealing Morsayati in the blood, and perhaps a greater concentration of it or something similar was what manifests a red fleck in the eyes? Ah, but alas, this is immediately disproved by the fact it's in this model, too, before he sealed the demon.

However, that doesn't mean it might lack entirely for significance. Perhaps it's an occasional feature of dragonblood, since they seemed like they kinda wanted to make the family have a bit more 'draconic' traits sometimes or otherwise have physical affects dragonblood brings, like how rarely some of the royal fam seems to have rather pointed/pronounced canines compared to the typical style in dragalia, like Leonidas and Emile here (alas, most the family doesn't often show off a full toothy grin, leaving us with the more emotive ones when they're really mad), or concept art of Euden who seems (to me, at least) to have slightly pointed ears:

I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, but I think it'd be interesting to explore if the family had other traits because of their dragonblood! It's noted in like one place to give them some different veins, like literal new veins, not just the composition of blood in standard ones flowing, so I don't think it's entirely off the table. I myself kinda play a bit with this idea in my one dragalia fic, Scaling the Walls of a Mystery on AO3 because it's just so cool to me (Which I'm working very hard on getting an update ready soon!), but I'm always down for more speculation!

So yeah, red or purple flecks in the royal family's eyes is surprisingly common. Did you notice that when playing, and/or speculate as to a potential import? Or is it just artists adding a quirk for the sake of it?
