Sam Pepper and CLT
Sam Pepper-- YouTube's infamous prankster pariah has come up again in light of his recent video titled, “Killing best friend Prank.”
To give you an idea of Sam Pepper’s character, when I typed him into my search bar, it associated “sexual assault” to his name. But that’s a different story... *sigh*
The video is a collaboration that includes YouTube/viners Colby Brock and Sam Golbach. The video opens with Sam Golbach and Colby “getting lost” in an alleyway.
The car breaks down and the two exit the car to inspect what is wrong.
Colby and a masked figure, who I can assume is Sam Pepper, convince Sam Golbach that both he and Colby were kidnapped by way of restraining Sam Golbach with duct tape around his arms and legs with a black bag put over his head - duck taped shut around his neck.
He is then forced into the back of a trunk and driven to a different location. 20 minutes later, on a rooftop, the mask is removed from Sam Golbach’s head-- revealing his best friend Colby - also tied up.
After a few gruesome minutes of Sam Golbach pleading for his friends life, the masked man, Sam Pepper, proceeds to “shoot” Colby in the head “killing him”. Sad instrumental music is played as Sam Golbach proceeds to break down.
This was at which point I lost my shit and cried.
Colby gets up from the ground revealing it was all a prank and it takes a while to convince Sam Golbach that everything was okay.
The prank ends with the two best friends embrace each other-- which honestly was very touching and one of the most genuine things I’ve seen on camera.
After the prank is finished, the three sit in front of the camera days later explaining how everything was fine and dandy. End of Video.
Now. My thoughts on the topic surrounding this video are vast and wildly placed on the emotional spectrum.
I guess, I’ll start by saying this is one of the most jarring video’s I have seen in the YouTube space to date.
The “prank culture” that is spawning all over YouTube-- where channels are wholly devoted to being a public nuisance and overall general asshole is a cancerous growth that needs to be tamed.
Pranks in nature, are supposed to be funny and amusing.
Not only was I unamused by this video, I was moved to the point of where I questioned why a video like this is even allowed on YouTube.
To put your best friend under such emotional duress, to me, is unforgivable.
And for that to be showcased on a platform that prides itself on it’s creative and innovative content creators brings into question why it hasn’t been taken down.
A group of hackers/hacktivists operating under the title of anonymous warned Sam Pepper on twitter that if he didn’t take his video down in 24 hours, they would unleash their wrath on him.
Scary, right?
At 12:00 am December 2nd, they released his UK, and L.A. home addresses to the public along with other information like his IP address.
I am all for justice to people who are shitty, but like, really, fam?
I think actions should be taken against Sam Pepper to prevent him from making negative and ill-natured content to such a large audience, but not only was this overkill, this was a gaddam slaughter.
A matter like this should be solved by the people who govern the platform - not a third party, unless that third party are the viewers creating petitions to get him off of YouTube.
I spent a good hour and a half scrolling through the comments of his video and I was mortified.
I understand that anonymity gives a person a place of power, but the majority of the comments were statements like “kill yourself” “I hope you die” and “you should be fucking shot”.
When you say things like that to another human-being, you lower yourself to the level that is far worse than what you perceive them to be.
Maybe he is a shitty person, but by stating he should end his own life, you become a shitty person as well.
And now we talk about CLT otherwise known as Construal level theory. CLT describes the relation between psychological distance and the extent to which people's thinking (e.g., about objects and events) is abstract or concrete.
The general idea is that the more distant an object is from the individual, the more abstract it will be thought of, while the closer the object is, the more concretely it will be thought of.
Which, to me, sounds exactly how we see celebrity culture.
Because they are so far removed from us, we view them as this abstract concept instead of a human that has emotions, beliefs, and thoughts. I brought this up because people are going to try and justify this bullying by saying he deserved it for his awful videos.
As shitty of a person Sam Pepper may seem, he is a real human being that does not deserve vigilante judgment passed over him in the style it was.
I would argue, that the people the released his information, are just as bad as he is, not matter how good the intention. All fame is good fame they say. Not this time, Sam. Not this time. I urge YouTube to put more policies in place to inhibit these types of videos from being shared on their platform.

Being gay is natural? Okay.
You have three islands. Divide them into groups of one. The straight island, the gay island, and the lesbian island. The straight island is going to reproduce and keep going strong for millions of generations to come. The gay and lesbian islands will both wipe out in not even one century. This isn’t just about religion or morals, it’s just simple common sense. Being gay is unnatural, and not just because God said so, but because you yourself wouldn’t even be born without a REAL natural man and woman. And no, there is no such thing as a lesbian bone marrow “thing” to have children. That’s a biased fact that came from a lesbian scientist who has false opinions. If it’s not a real penis or vagina, then it’s fucking false and you’re just opinionated by dumb facts. I’m done here. Read over what I said and if you still think that being gay is normal and natural, then I hope you achieve some common sense one day. Bye

A list of things not to do at a Troye Sivan Concert
1) don't line up 12 hours before the show-- you make the venue workers jobs unfun 2) don't bring massive signs-- it blocks others fans views and that's no fun. It's not about him noticing you. Enjoy the concert and be happy he's living the dream. 3) if you're fighting at a Troye Sivan Concert about who's the bigger fan, calm your tits, we're all the same amount of Troye Trash. Accept it and moooove on. 4) if you see a wild Connor Franta appear, cool, but don't make a spectacle over it that distracts from the concert. 5) don't over sing the entire song. We get it, you know the song, but if you're louder than the sound system, bitch chill-- we're here for that smooth Troye Boy vocal vibe, not your cacophony of fangirl yodels. Things to do at a Troye Sivan Concert: 1) have fun and appreciate how gaddam talented that lil boi is.

I remember when I tried to donate blood last year. I was so pissed off.

Outright bans on blood donations from men who have sex with men are rooted in homophobia, not science. Support the movement: bit.ly/inthemakingproject
