The paints are scattered across her desk, brushes tucked behind her ear, shirt splattered in a rainbow of color when she realizes that she’s creating a portal on her bedroom wall.

“Oh,” she says, fan brush dropping from her lips to speckle forest green against the baseboards. “Oh no no no.”

The sea of trees and ferns and flowers she’s been studiously shading seem to sway in laughter. There are shadows she doesn’t remember painting lurking in the background, curious lumps and towers that seem like whirlwinds in the half-dark of her room.

There’s really nothing for it, she realizes with a trembling sigh. She picks up her brush and draws the thin one out from behind her ear. This far into the process, she really has to finish and see what has a mind to come through.

She’s not particularly surprised when the next color she reaches for is red.
