Netsuke okimono, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.   Very good dramatic but also amusing work in the Shigemasa style. The snake winding around the ribbed pumpkin is effectively rendered with a wide open hissing dragon mouth. Not only is the snake winding itself around, but also the vines of the pumpkin around the reptile. Within the pumpkin is a toad, gazing out as if from a theater lodge
