Ive been looking to getting into mechanical watches, however it is quite overwhelming to get it into at first considering the huge amount of information there is. So I have 2 questions to ask if you don't mind! 1)How do you think one can get into watches and whatnot? (Like where to begin etc) 2) Whats a nice beginner mechanical watch (that's also budget friendly lol) that you would recommend? I would prefer it if I could see the backs so that I can watch the mechanics lol Thank you!! I hope you have a great day my friend!!

So to answer your question... yes I was hyperfixated on mechanical timepieces about fifteen years ago, so I fear I am probably woefully out of date on knowledge lol.

Back then you used to be able to buy a decent entry level mechanical watch for about $100, I haven't checked market prices lately so it might be more expensive now. I'd be wary of anything too much cheaper or by a company/website you've never heard of before. There was a trend for a while (largely thanks to steampunk) to make mechanical watches that looked extremely cool but crapped out within a couple of years and sell them cheaply, you can avoid this by sticking to established brands and a $100+ price point.

Myself, I have a Seiko mechanical watch that I bought for about $150 and it has been my daily driver for over a decade. I've had to take it to the watchmaker twice for very minor repairs but I think it's probably overall saved me money (since I don't have to buy batteries) especially because I anticipate it will last for several more decades.

Most mechanical watches have a transparent back (or at least they did 15 years ago lol) because everyone loves to see the mechanics so that shouldn't be difficult to find either.

Good luck and sorry I couldn't be of more help. I always found getting into mechanical watches as a hobby to be awkward because most people who are into them seem to be extremely rich white dudes in it for the prestige factor of having the latest Rolex when I just like cool mechanical shit lol. That's actually a big part of why I kind of fell out of it. But I do maintain that a decent entry or mid level mechanical watch is a lot of fun and a solid investment.
