once again thinking about this letter john irving wrote to his best friend william elphinstone malcolm on may 7th 1835 (context: jirv took a 2 month leave from HMS Edinburgh in order to pass his examination at the naval college but apparently malcolm was unaware of that and just thought that his best friend was neglecting their correspondence and he got real mad about it):
