Project Finalisations
Eve and I have now both finished our modules with successful results that are quite accurate to our initial sketches and our desired results.

I went back to our chosen site and measured the distance between each of the three trees in order to estimate our necessary amount of material. I did this by dividing the length of my module by the distance between the trees and then using the answer to that sum by multiplying it by the length of twine used for the module.
Tumblr media
I then approximated the time taken for my module and multiplying it by the difference in size. Then after calculating the time the full-scale work would take (including time planning and installing), I valued our labour as $35 an hour and multiplying our time by that amount.

New Directions
After consideration and receiving suggestions to create a work that is more than elements that hang from the trees we decided to further develop our ideas. Eve came up with the idea of a net hung between the trees in the park as it could be regenerated into a garden net.

Along with this idea we still continued to consider and develop new ideas. Eve and I began discussing the idea of making an interactive environment entirely from crocheted elements.

Experimentation
I was away sick this week, so during this time eve experimented with using different materials to create the forms, such as thinner wire and bamboo sticks. In this time I explored ideas of integrating the nature of the land into the wind spinner element of our idea. I visualised this by creating a sketch of a wind spinner with a eucalyptus leaf hanging from the bottom. I thought that this leaf could possibly be crocheted or carved out of wood. In this time I also made a material exploration using a naturally fibrous string (possibly hemp but unsure as I didn't buy it (was gifted by my mother)) and a module of the wind spinners. I found that this module was quite successful and even tested its spinning ability in the wind with lucrative results (it spun).

Due to the pole/branch formations being difficult to create with our desired look we decided to consider making our work solely out of spinners hanging from the trees.

Eve and I experimented with bending wire to make the previously discussed spiral shapes. In this process we considered somehow securing multiple pieces together to create several curving branches, but we then found that this task would be more difficult than we realised (and there were more sustainable material options) and so we decided to consider some other ideas.
Eve suggested wood, but the workshop only had small pieces of plywood which wouldn’t work to create our desired forms.

Collaboration !!
While discussing this assignment with my friend and classmate Eve Mathies, we decided to merge our ideas and collaborate. Eve’s concept was two parallel rows of spiralling, branch-like formations that curl over a pathway, creating an archway of which people can walk through.
Eve suggested that my idea for wind spinners could be combined by hanging them from the branch like formations.

Lisa Sammut

In searching for material that could be used to create organic formations, the use of wood was a source of inspiration that eve had found. In the work Full Circle Sammut has cut, carved and treated the wood to create a smooth clean finish to these circular pieces that utilise flowing curves, spirals, and organic shapes.

Barrambin spatial artwork brainstorming
in the beginning stages of developing ideas for an artwork, there were three main ideas I had been considering. These ideas were stepping stones, a bird bath, and crocheted wind spinners.
The idea of stepping stones was previously explored for one of the photoshop tasks we had. In this task I created the imagery of various stepping stones ascending up a hill in Barrambin park. I imagine these stones to have designs engraved in each one, depicting various motifs representing native flora and fauna in the area, through leaves, footprints, and flowers.
The idea of a bird bath was less developed but I liked the interaction with local fauna being part of the work as it connected to the idea of regeneration.
Crocheted spinners was the third idea I developed. This idea allowed me to work with textiles which is one of my main mediums, as well as connecting to ideas of nature through hanging them from the trees, bring attention to them, as well as interacting with the wind, which links to the park itself as the name Barrambin translates to “Windy Place”.

Cyrus Field (1970-1971)
This work is a study of geometric configurations, composed of a series of marble blocks of the same size. The path that these blocks create work with the environment, going around trees, and after time being weathered and covered by leaves, branches, and snow with the seasons.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude
This artistic duo has created a series of works in which they wrap various objects, landscapes, buildings, etc.
Tumblr media
Wrapped Trees (1997-98)
In their work Wrapped Trees (1997-98), 178 trees were wrapped with a woven polyester fabric. Christo has always seen trees as the “natural masters of all art”, so this work is an appreciation of that idea. The idea behind the work is giving the environment a new meaning through the process of wrapping it, giving it a sense of delicacy and projecting an aim of preservation of something sacred.

Week six
This week we spun a wheel of artwork prompts:
embodied energy, beyond human, re-use, material hazard, and sustainability claims.
My group got “re-use”.
Walking around outside we decided that we would make a work that sits in a tree. When discussing things that can be re-used, we thought of bags, specifically of how some people often put their fruit in bags to protect them from animals.
Tumblr media
We began our process by unraveling a fibrous string into the strips seen below. We began the intricate process of weaving the material together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the process continued our project began to have more of a basket shape. Creating the walls of this basket was a struggle in maintaining the correct pattern and tension to keep all elements standing upright, but with persistence and tape we eventually made it quite structurally sound.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the material we used was quite delicate, the work was structurally quite flimsy and folded in on itself a bit when we hung it. Despite any of these issues, my group was still quite pleased with the results of our work in the time we had.
