Future plans - Presentation
Tumblr media
Before this course I had studied photography BTEC level 3 course. On this course we covered many different types of photography. This helped me find what I liked within photography. During this course I had joined a group outside of college where photographers, models and make up artists got together to help each other out with portfolio works. We also got the opportunity to take our ideas to the next level and try them all out and work as a team.
Tumblr media
While studying on the BTEC course I had photographed a wedding and enjoyed it. This was something I was so scared to do but I loved every minute of the day. After I had shot this wedding I began to start up my own photography page to promote my work. Several people had booked me for weddings and this has been an ongoing mini business.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of this course I wanted to be a fashion photographer. I know that I didn’t want to be a studio fashion photographer but more of an outdoor fashion photographer. So at the beginning of this course I decided to start shooting the images I wanted to produce.
Tumblr media
At the middle of the course I wanted to be a photographer for television and film or possibly be a camera operator on a tv set. I also carried on shooting more weddings throughout.
Tumblr media
On this course I have learned how and why we should shoot in RAW. This was something I have always heard photographers talk about but something I had never been taught or even looked into. I have also learned more general photographic skills and as you can see by the two landscape images below my photographic skill has improved. I have also learned the basics on lightroom which was a program I had heard of yet never taught or even used.
Tumblr media
I am now taking pictures of landscapes and as I love to travel this is something I enjoy and do a lot. I would like to have my own business in wedding photography and have my own personal works like my landscape and travelling images on a stock image site as well as my own. This is what I want to do after I finish this course. This may change but this is more me and I feel that I have learned a lot from this course and I feel like I have found myself and what I would like to do within photography.
Tumblr media
After this course I will be attending Plymouth University as it is the progression course for my final year. I know they specialize in landscape photography and I am so excited to start. I would like my photography knowledge and skill to grow while on this course as well as produce a great set of imagery while there.
Tumblr media
After university I would like to travel as well as documenting all of my travels along the way. This will also help build up my portfolio as well as learning more as I shoot and explore. After travelling I would like to carry on with my wedding photography as it can be a great income and even if it isn't a full time job it will still be good to carry on and pursue it. I would also like to have a personal website where people can access my travel/landscape imagery and other personal works and projects. I would like to have a section of the site where people can order prints or designs of my works.

Re-presented work
Here are some screen shots from my specialist practice. This is a module we had last semester. This semester we had a module called independent practice and this was also a brief where we could produce whatever we wanted to.
I decided that I would like to carry on with my works that I had done for my specialist practice. In my specialist practice I had planned to take images of a road trip but they didn’t come out as good as I would have liked. However I did manage to take loads of landscape images which ended up being my finals. This is something I would like to do in the future and it does go in with my road trip theme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see I had done several photo shoots for this module but still felt that I was missing something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I felt that my work was missing something independent practice gave me the chance to work on and develop this work further. It also gave me time to reevaluate myself and my works. Here is some of the work I have produced for independent practice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see this work is more people based which is what I wanted to achieve for this module as my specialist practice was lacking in people. Where as this work I really wanted to try to have a story or to be able to have some text along with my images to tell you what happened at this moment in time.
I feel that I have developed my work and the way I work a lot over the last couple of months and it has helped me revaluate how I work and how I need to work in the future to help me with my outcomes.
For my independent practice I have also added an extra shoot where I have used a disposable camera to shoot more ‘road trip’ images but with a whole different feel and look to the images. I will have a blog on this work with tags to both professional and independent.

Evaluation
This module has been so much fun and it was great to be able to progress and develop my work further from doing the specialist practice module last semester.
Now I have completed and looked back at the work I have created for this module I am extremely happy with my progression. I am still wanting to perfect the end photographs but that is the whole point of developing my work. As travelling and road trips are something I do and will be doing in the future this will give me the chance to shoot more images.
This module has helped me understand that a module or personal work will never end but that it is an ongoing piece of work. This work will be something I am going to carry on with when I progress to Plymouth university.
I feel that technically this module I could have done better as I rarely use lightroom or photoshop and I feel that if I had spent more time using these programs that it could have helped the end result of my photographs. However I feel that I am pretty good when it comes to the technical side of a camera. Especially when it comes to taking pictures in bright or dull lighting.
Visually I feel that my work shows a and tells a good story. My images are clear and mostly have people in them. I do feel that I could have produced better images if I had spent more time shooting while at the Lakes.
This module has helped me as a photographer find myself and I enjoyed every minute of this module especially shooting it. I always look at travel photography with a documentary feel to it and I love the overall feeling and look of the images. Its makes me think about the world and its wonders and as I love to travel and explore these images are something I like to look at. Travelling the world is a huge thing now a days and lots of people crave travel.
My work could sell on stock images as well as a personal site. This is something I enjoy doing and it would be great to make some money from it. Hopefully it could fund some more travelling trips as well.
I feel that as a person and a photographer I have developed a lot over the last couple of years and my photography interests have changed and grown a lot. I now feel that I know where I would like to go with my work. I know that I would like to have a business in wedding photography as a more steady income and to have my landscapes and personal works on a website or stock image. This would help get me some money but not as regularly as wedding photography. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and the work I am creating now I feel is the best way for me to go. I have grown and found myself as a person as well as photography works.

Disposable Camera
For this module I decided to give myself a mini brief along side the Lake District series. This was something I wish I had thought of sooner as I would have loved to have shot this up in the Lake district instead of after.
Here are some of the images. They will all be handed in with my finals which will be the Lake District series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This will be am ongoing project for me and as I love to travel I hope I will make a good series of works out of these one day.

Annotation + Reflection
Here is the feedback sheet from my peer group review. The notes on the orange sticky note is what |I need to do to complete this module.
Tumblr media
After our groups had given feedback we all sat around and discussed what we all needed to do. We also gave clarification to peers on the feedback that we had given them. This really does help me as peers will find things that you have missed out or tell you what you could do better on certain things.
We also sit around the table with our tutor and have a discussion about what we need to do and how we thought the feedback helped us. As well as having shown our work previously around the table with tutor and peers. We do this in the weeks leading up to our hand in as a way to see everyones process and to help us see what we need to do and how we have developed ourselves and our works.

Selecting Finals
Here is the pile of images I had cut from a contact sheet of the images I had taken at the lake district. This has always helped me when it comes to sequencing and selecting final images.
Tumblr media
I then started to make three different piles 1 for detailed images 2 for landscapes and 3 for people based images.
Tumblr media
Here are those three piles. These have helped me go through and find what images I liked the most. What ones had a good story and showed a good narrative.
Tumblr media
Here is the selection of images I have chosen for finals. I won’t be printing every single one out as some of the landscape images are the same but at different times in the day. I will chose my favorite out of these images and print them.
Tumblr media
While going through the images to select my finals I had an idea of how I would like them printed and presented for my hand in. As it was taken while I was on holiday I wanted the images to feel and look like holiday snaps once they were printed.
So I have decided to print 19 finals all at 6X4 as this is the standard print size for holiday snaps. I want people to be able to go through them and look at them as though they are looking at someones holiday pictures. I would also like to add some text to the backs of the prints to explain what has happened in the photograph just like you would in a family album or a holiday photo album.
Here are the images I have selected as my finals.
Here are the images printed with text on the backs of the images.

My Portfolio
My portfolio will be filled with landscape photography as that is where I would like to go with my photography and that is the work I would like to produce. In this image below I had laid out all of the images that everyone in class liked. I only selected the ones from those that I felt were strong enough to go into a portfolio. I then started to think and lay them out into a sequence ready to go into the portfolio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some of the images in the sleeves of the portfolio. This portfolio wasn’t very expensive but I liked how clear the sleeves were and it did the job as well as being clean and presentable. I didn’t want to spend a whole lot of money on this portfolio as it did exactly what I wanted it to do.
Tumblr media
Here is the outside cover of the portfolio. It has no faults and is light weight and easy to carry around to interviews. It is also A4 sized so the images are not too small and they are not too big.
Tumblr media
In the future I probably would get bigger portfolio with updated imagery once I have shot a lot more landscapes. I feel like this portfolio is well put together for my first real portfolio. I will also be producing another portfolio outside of university for my wedding photography as I will be needing one for clients to look through when they are looking at photographers. This would need to be either prints or in a book. My portfolio will be handed in to my tutor at the hand in date.

Portfolio Research
I have looked at several websites about portfolios and I didn’t know that you could go get your portfolio reviewed at special events or by booking a slot with people who do this for a living.
Recently we had a photographer Maria Mochnacz come into our class to talk about her work as well as showing us two very different types of portfolios she had.
One cost her a couple of hundred pounds and the other cost her £50. Her favorite portfolio was the cheaper one and it was also the one that she had, had the most feedback on. It was bound together by string and had the ability to be able to look at the images flat on a surface. Along with her images she had cuttings out of newspapers and other things that her work had been on.
The more expensive portfolio had a black plastic cover and all of the images were in plastic wallets but these wallets looked as though they were laminated onto the prints. It was very good as it protected the images and also had the ability to see the images clearly as the plastic wallets didn’t have any matt or shine finish to them.
This really helped me think about what a person or viewer wants to see in a portfolio. People like to be able to touch things as well as see a persons personality throughout their portfolio.
Here are some websites I have found that make portfolios as well as books which could also be used as a portfolio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This website was pretty good and it even had examples of what they had produced. When you hover over the image with your cursor it tells you how much it all costs as well as the sizing and gsm of the paper used.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The type of paper and cover you get on your portfolio changes the pricing for your portfolio very much and it all depends on how you would like your portfolio to look. It would need to suit you, your work and your style.
Tumblr media
These websites prices all varied and you could make a portfolio for a cheaper price once you customise the sizing and type of paper you use. This research has been quite useful and I didn’t know there would be so many places available to print.
I have also had a read through ‘no plastic sleeves’. I have found this book great as it speaks about so much and it has a lot of relevance to what we are doing for professional development and our mediation module. Here are some images from the pages I have found to be useful for this module.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In these pages it had spoke about what types of portfolios you can make. How they can be bound together and lots of other important information.
Tumblr media
There was also a page about folded pages and embossing which I really like. I feel that embossing would really suit my work and my brand. This is something I will look into for a future portfolio as I know it will cost more unless I produce it myself. I don’t quite trust myself to produce that myself and would rather pay to get it made professionally.

When we first received this brief I wasn’t very enthusiastic about it as I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in the future and I didn’t know anything about an artist statement nor did I know a lot about having a brand within a business.
This brief really opened my eyes as to what goes into a business and how to get a brand. Half of the things we had to do I didn’t even think about doing or having in a business. However now completing this assignment I feel that it was probably the most useful assignment we’ve had so far.
I have been taking pictures at weddings now for the last three or so years and this brief made me open my eyes as to what I would like to do after the course. As well as help me think about making contacts within the landscape industry.
I have never thought about having my own wedding photography business until we had this brief. I wanted to try to get a job within a photography company but I wasn’t too sure what. I didn’t think about having my own personal landscape/travel photography site where I could sell my images and have a stock image account for those image. As well as having a wedding photography business on the side. This is what I would like to do as I can get the best of both worlds and still make a living from my photography.
A way I could make contacts through my landscape work could be to contact local organisations and travel sites for a place I have taken images of. This could lead to them using my images or even buying them. This also leads to other people seeing my work.
Professionally I have learned a lot from this module and it has made me think about where I would like to be professionally within my chosen industries.

Brand Statement
The kind of work I would like to do is landscape photography. Travelling is a huge part of my life and landscapes photography is taken everywhere I go. I feel that this work is the best kind of work I can produce as a photographer.
I feel that I am a very well organised person who is fast paced and creative. I enjoy working in groups but also like to work on my own. The outdoors is where I love to be when producing images and I like the whole adventure feel to an image.
I do feel that as a professional photographer I need to have more Photoshop and light room skills as that is something my work lacks in. I like to leave the image as untouched as I possibly can as I want to show the real thing. I do feel that my work could benefit me having knowledge on these programs.
In general I am a very organised person and I am constantly writing lists so that I am completely organised and prepared. I think that I am a very polite and friendly person who is very welcoming.
I enjoy the world and its wonders. I love capturing wildlife, culture and just the greenery around us. This is why I enjoy taking photographs of it. The creativity and variety of photography is great and everyone can create something unique and their own.
I would like to be able to work for myself and be self employed. I would like to have my own website where people can purchase my landscapes. I have also thought about having my images on a stock image site as this could help with potential clients and more of a chance for people to see my works.

Where to get postcards printed/business cards
After speaking with my tutor and having a tutorial both me and the tutor thought it would be a good idea to produce and sell some post cards at the graduation show. This would be a good way of promoting work as well as making some money for my work. However I don’t have a lot of funds at this moment in time and I would be out of pocket. This is something I would like to do in the future and to be able to sell at markets. Selling at a market or fair is something I have thought about and would be a great place to sell some work along with postcards. This will be something I will do in the future.
As for business cards I have previously made some with vistaprint a couple of years ago and the quality wasn’t as great as I would have liked. I have spoke and seen some of my peers business cards which I have particularly liked from a site called moo. I have been browsing through their site and trying to select a template for my works and one where I could have several different images on the backs of the cards. I like this as they are not all the same and someone can pick up one with an image on they like. These business cards will be next to my works at our graduation show and if they have been delivered in time then they will be in with my portfolio for my tutors to see for hand in.
From how easy it was to make and after seeing the quality of cards I will definitely be using moo.com again. They even produce postcards so this will be a great place to order them from when I decide when I would like to produce them.

Tutorial with Tutor
Tumblr media
Here is the tutorial sheet used. I found this tutorial great as it sparked a few ideas that I hadn’t thought of before. Like contacting people/organisations up in the Lake District where I took some of my images. It didn’t even cross my mind as I could have a potential market up there or be credited on a website. This would definitely help me start to set up contacts as well as getting my work out into the world.
It also helped sum up me as a photographer and I feel that I have more of a direction of where I would like to go and who I can contact. As well as helping me think of other ideas.

24/7 Bristol
For this brief we were told to shoot something people based that has captured news or culture in Bristol. I chose to shoot Bristol’s Anime con. We were told to recce the location and know what the weather will be like on that day. We were told to shoot a small story and we needed to produce one hero image and one signature image. The hero image being the banner image for a website or magazine and the signature mage to be the leading image.
Here are my images that I have chosen for the final 24/7 images.
Hero image.
Tumblr media
Signature Image.
Tumblr media
I had chosen these as I feel they show more of a story than all the other images I had taken on that day. Here are some of the other images I had taken on that day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These other images could have also been either a hero or a signature image. Now looking back on my images I know that I could have shot more people and asked more people for images. The weather was great and I went on the sunday which I knew would be the best day according to the weather. This was a great place to shoot a photo story I just wish I had spent more time in there and got to know some of the people better and followed peoples individual stories.
