Reflection-Blog Post 3
On the 22nd of May 2017 during an Ariana Grande concert the at Manchester arena the unthinkable happened. 22 people died and many more were injured. Manchester was a city in mourning and mancunians came together in unity. I have decided to create a tribute to those people affected by the awful event. I wanted to focus on the positives of Manchester and show Manchester as a world leading city. I did this by creating a piece that consisted of 22 hives, in each hive was a great thing about Manchester.
This project has allowed me to think about Manchester as a city; I have learnt a lot about Manchester and all the great things that have been achieved in Manchester. My research has been a big part in terms of learning about Manchester and incorporating this within my work. By learning about Manchester, I was able to engage with my research and develop it into a piece of work.
I have engaged with collaborating and communicating ideas to peers and tutors. This has included tutorials and discussions of idea. This included sharing ideas, feedback such as what can improve on and what to develop further. Collaborating process consisted of me and Kanwal giving each other feedback and support rather than collaborating on a project together. This was useful and allowed us both to think creatively about each other’s project. I also intended to collaborate with companies within Manchester. However, I did not include these within any of my pieces due to fact that not many people donated me items; or would be willing to donate but I would not receive it in time for the exhibition. The things I did get donated were to big to fit into my hives. I did include one photo to which I got donated from ITV. I would have liked to include more donated items however it could take up to 6 months for a company to donate an item and the timescale of this unit did not fit around that.
I have also engaged with many aspects during this project including woodwork, photography and ceramics. This was my first time working with wood as a medium. One thing that I would change about this is creating my hives in the woodwork studio. I was unable to do this during this project as the wood that I required was not available to me in the woodwork studio; the studio also had no room for me to store my wood. This resulted me into buying the wood from elsewhere and working from home. Â I think that the hives were successful. However, I would change the wood that I worked with. The wood that I worked with was quite flimsy and this meant when added pressure was put on it was likely to break.
Overall, I think that the project was successful. My ideas stayed the same within my project however I expanded them and started to work more creatively with the theme which I gave myself. I developed my idea and I think that the overall outcome turned out how I would have liked it to look.
Next September as a class we are coming together to put on another exhibition of our work again. These will be in a selected venue and each work will be displayed somewhere else. I plan to develop my work over the summer to make the piece slightly different. I am going to work with the same ideas and develop them even further to create a piece to be displayed again. My ambitions for this next step to the project intend to sticking with the theme of the hives and great things about Manchester but maybe displaying it differently; for example, the hives may be shown differently.
