Nell opened her own snacks, pushing her goldfish into the cake by their tails. She made a ring around the top of the treat, tiny orange heads sticking out and looking like they were trying their hardest to swim towards the sky. She listened to the woman carefully, snorting out a laugh when she was finished. “Shit, yeah. I mean, story of my life, dude. There’s a reason I stopped planning for anything.”
“Alright, humor me. What is the story of your life?” Charlotte asks, popping in another snack. “Oh and if you’re worried about the whole stranger danger thing, my name’s Charlotte. But you can call me, Charlie.” She leans a touch closer to the other and smiles, “Now about that story.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Nell smirked, gently nudging at the woman’s legs to move them over enough that she could sit on the edge of the bed. “C’mon, scoot, I got a little butt and I only need a little room.” She shook her head at the cheez-it covered in chocolate pudding, wrinkling her nose. “I gotta say, I like your style. But I’m more a goldfish-shoved-into-a-chocolate-cake kinda person,” she said with a grin, picking up the bag of goldfish. “I feel that loneliness, though. It was a weird day, right?”
Charlotte shifted over; allowing the other some space. “I don’t think weird begins to cover it.” She sighs, going to open a large wrapped cake. She bit into it, feeling the sugar all over her veins. “I think what’s weird is the uncertainty of life. One minute you could have everything planned out and then next it’s all over. Like that. Plans are derailed and suddenly nothing you know matters. Am I making any sense?”

“God, I forgot how high maintenance you are some times.” he teased with a look of pure adoration on his face. He turned to look at their son and cocked his head, confused. “You’re acting like that’s a bad thing? You’ll understand when you’re older. Sometimes, there are things that transcend the little things that you might have worried about before, and you realize you’d do anything to - yeah okay, you caught us.” He sighed, dropping the powerful speech he’d started. He shrugged and cringed a little as he looked to Lottie before smiling shyly. “Oops.”
Clara squealed with delight and ran over to her dad & wrapped her arms around him. “Does that mean you’re coming home?” He smoothed her hair down and kissed the top of her head. “We’re still figuring stuff out, but if you think for a second that I’m not going to be taking care of your mom every second until she’s better, you’re crazy.” he looked up to Lottie. “Oh, by the way, I invited, or well, more like forced Sawyer to agree to move in until she’s on the mend so you two can have some company and be taken care of at the same time.” He looked to Lily and JD “And I expect you both to pitch in.”
“How long has this been going on?” Lily asked, suspicious. Bryan looked over at Lottie. “Why didn’t you guys tell us?!” JD asked, exasperated. The older two looked at each other at a loss. They were happy, yes, but still confused. “Four fuuuucking years we’ve been trying to get you two back together.” JD said, his cadence similar to the way Bryan speaks. He shot a glance at him for cursing - it’s not like he could really discipline him since he himself cursed often enough and JD was legally an adult now. Getting upset with him over the word fuck felt trite. “What took you two so long!”
She bit her lip at the cheesy speech he was about to give. But relaxed when he didn’t finish. “Jared Dean!” Charlotte gave her kids a pointed look, “Point is... You dad and I just wanted to take things slow for the benefit of the family. We didn’t want to rush things or get hopes up, okay? Like you dad said, we’re still... Figuring a lot out.” She admits. “But go home. Get some rest, alright? Come visit tomorrow, after school. If you think you’re missing a single day you’re all sorely mistaken.” Charlotte teases before giving all her kids a final hug and kisses, sending them home for the night.
Charlotte falls against the pillows and closes her eyes for a second. When she opens them her leg is still in its cast. So it wasn’t a dream.
“It’s not your fault you know.” She says, looking over at Bryan. “I know you well enough to sense that you probably blamed yourself. What if I picked her up? Planned a later date? You can’t think like that, it’ll eat you up.”
“You sure you’re going to be able to take care of us?” She winces at the slight movement of her leg. “I don’t think we’re going to be particularly much fun the next few months... I know sex is probably off the table.” Charlotte chuckles, trying to lighten the mood, “Can’t do too much rigorous activity, ya know.”

harrison was both exhausted and on edge, which he was sure wasn’t a good combination. jumping at the sound of something clattering to the ground, harrison takes a breath, glancing apologetically at the person beside him. “sorry, didn’t mean to nearly knock ya over. guess i’m a little on edge.”
Charlotte hated feeling trapped in her bedroom so she managed to shit herself onto the wheelchair and roll her way to the food court. Her rather large contraption took some getting used to. She couldn’t warn the man fast enough before he bumped into her, causing her to drop her tray of food.
“It’s alright.” She sighs, running a hand through her hair. Not even bothering to pick up the tray in her chair bound status. “I should’ve given you a heads up. This dumb wheelchair is too much for me to steer sometimes.”

{ { @charlottexvanderbilt } }
Niklaus knew that he needed to be resting right now, but he just couldn’t do it. He had seen so many injured people just hours ago. A lot of them were people he knew. Friends of his. He’d seen Charlotte at the incident, but she was already being looked at by paramedics at the time. Now that they were in the hospital, Niklaus needed to go make sure she was okay. From the looks of things, it seemed as though she had been injured pretty badly.
Nik had given the receptionist a name, and was soon given a room number in exchange. He made his way down the busy hospital hallway, walking past a lot of familiar faces and then stopping when he reached the room. He could see Charlotte almost immediately and knocked on the door before stepping forward. “Hey, Char— can I come in?”
Upon the familiar voice, her face lit up. Charlotte told her family to get some rest at home still it was hard to be alone at this time. “Nik! Please come in.” She motions, setting aside the fourth pudding cup of the day. “I know I look like crap so please forgive me.” She chuckles and points to the chair beside her bed. “Sit, sit.” A groan escapes her lips as she tries to adjust herself.
“Hey, now. Why the long face?” Charlotte asks, taking his hand and giving it a small squeeze. “Are you hurt? Did someone check you out?”

He smiled, eyes still bleary. “You scare me like that again, and I’ll kill you myself.” Hearing her sense of humor intact had him relieved. Bryan leaned in and cupped her face, leaving a soft kiss on her lips. “The doctor said you’re going to have to stay overnight at minimum, maybe even a second night.” He brushed her hair from her face the way he did after each birth and whenever he gazed into her eyes after making love. The relief of everything being okay hit him like a brick wall and he felt himself get exhausted from the adrenaline crash. He pulled back and sat in the chair he’d pulled up beside her. “I saw Sawyer. She’s got a broken pelvis, but she’s okay. And I’ve been in contact with your parents keeping them updated on you both.” He looked to his kids. “JD and Lily were A+ swapping out to run errands or help with Clara.” “Speaking of…” Lily stepped forward. “Now that you’re okay, we should go grab you some stuff you need from home. Is there anything you need?” Bryan nodded at Lily. “See what I mean? Top notch.” He looked around her side of the room. “Sometimes they have toiletries and you can ask for extra blankets or pillows…”
“A broken pelvis...” Lottie feels the armors in her body start again, closing her eyes as awake of nausea rode through her. But she had to be strong for her kids.
“They are top notch.” She agreed. At the thought getting her kids a chance to go home, Charlotte concocted a long list. “Clothes. Clothes would be great. Water spray and sponge. It’ll help cool me down. Comfortable pillows. These are making my back ache and if you can get my favorite ones, Clara knows which. Maybe my tablet? The entertainment here sucks. Oh! My eye mask and earplugs to help me get an actual good night’s rest. An––”
“Woah, woah, woah.” JD stands up as he holds his up. Everyone’s eyes fall on their eldest.
“Is no one going to talk about that?” He points at his father, “Sure, it took a second to process but dad literally just kissed mom. And non one is going to say anything?”
Busted.

Nell hadn’t wanted to go home after the incident. It seemed wrong, and she definitely needed to relax a bit before heading her own way. It probably shouldn’t have been relaxing, hanging out at the hospital, but it was sort of nice to be around others that had experienced the same trauma. It wasn’t like she had a family she could go home and vent to, or even friends…so listening to others vent, and trying to help out a bit, was oddly therapeutic for her.
Things were starting to settle down, so she figured she should head out now. As she started down the hallway, she heard a voice calling out, and with a quick glance around Nell realized the voice was probably talking to her. “Um, hey?” She walked into the room, hands in her jacket pockets. “Chocolate pudding? Sure, yeah, I can do that.” And she was off, gone for maybe five minutes before trailing back, belly button exposed as she used her t-shirt to carry a medley of snacks that she dropped onto the bed next to the woman. “So you’ve got two chocolate pudding cups, a couple packages of cheez-its, one bag of goldfish, and three little cream-filled chocolate cakes,” she said, snagging one of the cakes for herself.
Charlotte’s eyes widened as the snacks and treats were deposited before her. Fuck, when was the last time she indulged in the sweeter things of life? Not the gourmet, home cooked kind. But the processed yumminess that was Goldfish and Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes.
“Oh my, you’re a blessing from above.” Charlotte reaches over for a pudding cup and rips open a bag of cheezeits so she could dunk them. A weird comfort food during rough times. “If you’ve nothing better to do, would you mind staying a bit?” She offers her cheezeit dunked snack to the other, “It’s kinda lonely, I realize. And after today... The last thing I want is to be alone.”

“It’s okay. I’ll always wait for you.” He brushed her hair from her face. “You look beautiful.” Her arm was already hooked up to a bag of blood that they were in the process of changing. “I will. I’ll find her. I promise.” He nodded. “I’ll get JD to drive them down here. Just hold on for me.” He squeezed her hand. Only realizing he was crying as his nose tickled from a drip of snot edging it’s way out, and itch from the tear slowly trailing down over his cheek. “Everything’s going to be okay. I love you, too.” A doctor held him back as they pushed through the double doors deeper into the hospital. The doctor explained what happened. A crash. Drunk Driver. Femoral Artery. Loss of blood. Surgery. Power of Attorney. Will. Bryan only caught words here and there, but enough to make it painfully clear how dire the situation was. He nodded and wiped his face, trying to keep his composure and not completely lose it.
The doctor told him he’d be out with paperwork in a few minutes, so Bryan excused himself and found the bathroom where he completely broke down. The thought of what she was going through…that there was a risk she might not survive… it was all too much. And, of course Bryan blamed himself. Had he just picked her up and drove them. Had he picked a different day. Had he just tried to work things out sooner. Had he tried harder to not let their relationship break apart in the first place. She wouldn’t have been there when it happened. They might never have even moved to Georgia. He thought about the last time they’d been in the middle of a tragedy, though neither of them had been hurt, it was every bit as terrifying as now. Living in New York on 9/11 had changed their lives forever. But, they were together and never apart. Now she was alone and scared and unconscious, and there was nothing he could do to help her. All he could do was wait.
Bryan took a deep breath once he was able to begin pulling himself together and blew his nose before splashing his face with water and washing it with some hand soap. He took another breath and left the bathroom to call JD to get Lily and Clara and come to the hospital. He told them to bring phone chargers. Once they arrived he explained what was going on, and Clara burst into tears almost instantly. Lily was barely holding it together, and even JD was on the verge of tears. The family huddled together and went to sit in the few open seats left. He assured them everything would be alright. The doctor came out with the paperwork and Bryan introduced him to the kids, and said that if he wasn’t around for some reason, but JD was, to speak with him to call him. Lily and JD swapped off running errands - getting food, taking Clara to the bathroom, running back home for things needed - and the family took turns visiting Sawyer. After a few long hours, the doctor came out and told them the surgery was a success, but that she was resting and still half asleep from the anesthetic. He escorted them up to the room and Bryan had JD skirt off to pop in to tell Sawyer her sister was okay before rejoining them. The kids waited at the foot of the bed while Bryan came around to the side to hold her hand. They didn’t know how much longer before she’d wake up, and were told that she was on heavy medication, so she’d still likely be out of it for a bit.
The incessant beeping rattled around Charlotte’s brain. She groaned. Her limbs heavy with every slight movement. Slowly her eyes opened to be greeted by white light from above. She couldn’t move her leg thigh. Fuck, was it cut off? Hazel eyes snapped awake to see her legs still there, she wiggled her toes in relief. Soon she was bombarded with hugs and the familiar scent of her kids. Charlotte sighs into their embrace. She peppers kisses all over their faces as they each sob out their worries. But like any mom she simply reassures them all that she’d be okay.
They step aside and she smiles at them, feeling her hand encased in another’s as she looks over at the other man. She tints remembering she told him that she loved him. In her defense, she didn’t think she’d make it out alive. Squeezing his hand she offers him a smile, “Why do you look like crap?” Her voice cracked at the sentence.
“You didn’t think you could get rid of me that easily, did you?” She teased, resting her back against the fluffy pillows.

Charlotte had told her family to get some rest and that she’d be fine until morning. The kids had school the next day and it was important for them to get their mind off the incident. With some hard convincing she also got her husband to give her some breathing room. The loneliness drover her up the wall, aside from being with a different surgical patient. IN that instant her stomach growled but she’d just eaten the meal her family brought.
Seeing a patch of brown hair walk on by her room she called out in hushed tone, “H-Hey! You! Sorry.” She blushes, adjusting her seat. “Listen, I know this is crazy but could I ask a favor? I’m starving and am craving a chocolate pudding cup. Any way you could swipe one for me?”

bryan-hawkins:
Bryan had everything set up as he waited for his wife across town. He’d made it official and asked her out on a date, wanting things to continue to progress after they’d made up a few days after Valentine’s Day. They’d been quietly seeing each other again - going on dates and sleeping around - for over a month and were trying to keep things quiet around the kids. Bryan wanted things to get back to how they were slowly and carefully. Every discussion was had calmly with them working on getting their communication back to how it was early in their relationship and looking for compromises so they could prevent the issues that caused the breakup in the first place. Last thing Bryan wanted to do was get the kids’ hopes up and things fail, or move too fast back into old patterns and risk those same fights coming back all over again. The sneaking around and catching up on all the intimacy they’d lost in four years was exhilarating.
He wanted to talk to her about what the next step in their unique situation would be. Bryan felt weird about asking when he could move in or if they wanted to do a vow renewal ceremony (which he did want to do), or at the very least how to tell the kids they were at least working things out if not already back together. That’s what he hoped to discuss over a nice romantic early dinner. But Lottie was late. … Very late. … She’s the most punctual person Bryan’s ever met.
No texts or missed calls. So Bryan calls her.
No answer.
And again a few minutes later. …
Nothing.
Just as he’s about to dial his son’s number while suppressing the overreation that she’s been in an accident, he gets the call. “Hello, Mr. Hawkins? Your wife was in an accident and is in route to the hospital. We need you to get here as quickly as you can. We cannot give more details about the patient over the phone.”
His hearing faded and his vision began to tunnel. Bryan’s body went into over drive. He didn’t hear the rest of what was said. He just hung up the phone and began to run from the restaurant. He began to drive at breakneck speed - or as fast as he could through the town - before something in the back of his head spoke up. Slow down. They don’t need you in an accident, too. Bryan made it to the hospital as multiple ambulances were lined up with stretchers being pulled out with broken and bleeding bodies and new clean ones getting loaded back up for them to head back to the scene. Bryan ran into the ER to the front desk and frantically asked for his wife’s location. The woman tried to calm him down and began looking her up. “She hasn’t been brought in yet-” Bryan spun around and ran back outside to watch the paramedics until he spotted someone who looked like her. “LOTTIE!” He raced over to the gurney. “That’s my wife! Charlotte! Baby, I’m here.” He was fighting back tears. She was covered in blood from the waist down and was pale. Her eyes couldn’t seem to focus, probably on the brink of passing out due to shock or blood loss. Or both. “Sweetheart, it’s me, just listen to my voice. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. Everything’s going to be okay.” He held onto her hand, her grasp weak, and kept up beside her as they wheeled her in at a brisk pace.
@charlottexvanderbilt
Charlotte was on her way to meet Bryan for another date. Things had been going well. But she didn’t want to jinx anything. Fixing her dress, she walked through the sea of people listening to the Mayor’s speech. She didn’t have time to stay as much as she would like to.
The next thing she knew, Charlotte had been waking up with cries and sirens filling her eardrum. She couldn’t move. Fingers twitched as she tried to regain consciousness. She groans, trying to sit up and seeing red. There was so much blood. A large glass shard protruded from her thigh, she blinked as her vision blurred, falling back under darkness.
Weaving in and out of consciousness, Charlotte saw bright lights and she could hear questions. She wanted so desperately to scream but the pain was too searing. She nodded her head as she was pretty sure someone asked her a question, falling back into a deep sleep.
Eyes opened as the world around her spun. Her breathing shallow as she felt a hand encase her own. Heavy eyelids peered one to see a familiar tousle of brown hair. A weak smile as she squeezes his hand, “I-I’m sorry I was late.”
A bolt of pain races up her thigh, she groans as her breathing intensifies. “Bryan... Bryan. Listen to me, you have t-to find Sawyer. And the kids...” She gulps as she lifts the oxygen mask, “You have to take care of them okay?” If Charlotte didn’t make it out alive, she’d knew that her babies were in great hands. Her body fought restless against the gurney, she could feel the energy leaving her. “Let them know that I love them.”
The now or never moment as she takes one last squeeze on his hand, “And I love you too, baby.”

Bryan shook his head. “I’ll do it.” He whispered back. He pulled the blanket off of them and hoisted his daughter into his arms. She stirred slightly but stayed asleep. He gently woke her up to brush her teeth and say good night. She protested, wanting to come back down again, but she was already starting to nod off again. Bryan came back down to join the rest of the family and sat back down beside Lottie.
Charlotte smiled as he sat down beside her, adjusting the blanket so it covered them both. Under covers, did their hands find their way to one another. Slowly but surely, she captured his hand with her own and smiled. At The movie? The hand holding? Both? Lottie would never tell. It wasn’t until a few more minutes in did her confidence grow. Slipping out of her grasp, she laid a hand on his thigh. Resting it there, unmoving. Slowly she applies pressure. Allowing her hands to knead the muscle and moves it way closer up his cock.
Eyes glued onto the screen as though nothing happened beneath sheets.

“charlie, charlie!” the blonde said, tapping her fingers on the table as she was trying to tell her sister a story. “you look like a mess” she said looking over at the woman “and I can say that because I’m your sister” she added, offering a warm smile. “I mean i’m not sure what diner work I can do but can help in any way?” she asked “I hate seeing you like this, char”
“Oh no, don’t worry about it Sawyer. You came here looking to get away from work I’m sure not drown in it.” She chuckled, taking a hold of her sister’s hand. “You know what we should do? We should have a girl’s day. Just you and me. Like old times. No boys, no kids. Just mud masks and the full spa treatment.”

“Damn right I am.” He winked at her and went to the living room. Lily and Clara were coming over loaded up with blankets and pillows that they spread around. “JD, why didn’t you help your sisters.” “I was getting the movie started.” Bryan gave him a pointed look as Lottie came in. He settled in at the couch and smiled to Lottie, longing for the day when things would be completely back to normal. They were much closer today than they had been - leaps and bounds.
“Nah, we chose The Princess Bride.” Bryan smiled at JD and nodded. “Good choice.” It was one of his favorite movies that he’d always watch with the kids when they were home sick from school, and one of the last movie nights they had before the split as a whole family. It was fitting to choose this for their first one again. Clara, having only been four at the time was experiencing this for the first time all over again, since she could hardly remember what being a complete family was like. She hopped up onto the couch between parents and snuggled into Bryan’s side. He tucked her in and kissed the top of her head and reached towards Lottie against where the back and seat met, seeking her hand to hold, even if just for a moment.
The Princess Bride was indeed a classic, one Charlotte would hold in her heart forever. She turned her head to his outstretched hand and with the comfort of the kids focusing on the screen was she able to reach for his own and interlace their fingers.
They’d only reach the middle of the film when Clara’s snoozes filled the air. Charlotte gave a coo at their daughter as she nodded to her sleeping figure on Bryan’s chest. “Do you want me to put her to bed?” She mouthed, pointing upstairs.
