Fat soluble vitamins
I’m a chemistry major and I have something important to tell you (x)
Some vitamins can be absorbed ONLY if you consume some fat. These vitamins are called fat soluble or lipophilic.
Some important facts:
- vitamins are essential micronutrients (essential means that you need to intake them by eating them because the body cannot make them)
- small amounts of these vitamins are NECESSARY
- it’s not recommended to take supplements of these vitamins as they get stored and can be toxic
•
The lipophilic vitamins are:
A- importance: bone & tooth growth, reproduction, regulation of the immune system, ‘moistness’ of mucous membranes
- where: dairy, fish, liver, dark green veggies, bright orange fruits & veggies
•
D- importance: calcium absorption, forming & maintaining bones, immunity, cell growth
- where: dairy, oily fish, skin also produces vitamin D in response to sunlight
•
E- importance: antioxidant (protects vitamin A& C, red blood cells, fat cells from destruction)
- where: vegetable oil (!), fruits, veggies, nuts, grains, seeds
•
K- importance: blood clotting, bone health, protein production
- where: green leafy veggies, vegetable oils
•
Stay safe.
With love,
Your local chemistry major
(I spent an hour making this post, please spread the message) 🥦
