Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āšš¤šŖš§ šØšš¤ššØ-ā¦?ā Julia found she could only spare an exasperated sigh at the sight of his socks- and were they š®šŖš“š®š¢šµš¤š©š¦š„? At the very least, it was good to know that her partner was still himselfā¦š®š°š³š¦ š°š³ šš¦š“š“. Still, watching him deflate, his shoulders slump, his eyes turn downcast- it wasnāt a comforting transformation, but if it was for his own goodā¦he would have to find it in his heart to forgive her later.Ā Ā
Honestly, if he hadnāt turned around and asked for a ride, Julia would have gone after him- there was šÆš° šøš¢šŗ she was going to allow the man to walk the streets of Poitiers alone in this state. She quickly caught up to her partner, placing a gentle hand on his arm.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āOf course, Devineaux, Iām parked just around the block.āĀ
The streets were empty, thankfully- it allowed Juliaās nerves to settle, for her to get her thoughts in order. The prospect of further discussing ššš«š¦šš§ ššš§šš¢šš šØ did not appeal to her, especially if it was going to send him into another š§š³š¦šÆš»šŗ, but they did need to talk about their work relationship- š°š³ šš¢š¤š¬ šµš©š¦š³š¦š°š§. As far as Julia knew she was still slotted to work with Agent Zari in the field, but if Devineaux was once again an active agentā¦
Julia fished around in her pocket for her car-keys, pressing a worn button with her thumb as her ride came into view.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āI can give you a ride home, and thenā¦letās continue this conversation in the morning š¢š§šµš¦š³ you get a full nightās rest.ā She didnāt want to sound overbearing, but she was truly concerned for Chase- the man had taught her everything back at Interpol after all; he had taken her under his wing when nobody else would.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āā¦š š³š¦š¢šššŗ š¢š® šØšš¢š„ šµš° š“š¦š¦ šŗš°š¶ š¢šØš¢šŖšÆ, š“šŖš³.āĀ
Without much protest, Chase sat down on theĀ passenger seat, giving a sigh of relief. It was clear that he really needed too take some time to relax, there hasnāt been a minute of respite ever since he got back to civilization, mostly due to himself of course, because he really really really wanted Ms. Argent to know he was back and correct, most people would chalk that up to hubris and a damaged ego but.... um... shut up!
āWell, Imamgladtoseeyatoo...ā The Frenchman mumbled under his breath as he stared out the car window. Although the man would never admit it, Ms. Argent was probably the only sight that brought him any semblance of joy. Not that Chase doesnāt have other friends, he does... thereās like... that... that guy from Interpol... Leon? Something withĀ a L... REGARDLESS... despite his many existent friends, Ms. Argent is definitely almost reaching the top 10.
An awkward silence filled up the car, being brokenĀ just by a couple of coughs. The man wished to speak about Carmen Sandiego, but honestly, Ms. Argent wasnāt completely wrong, he could really use some shut-eye before getting into it, and he couldnāt go back to crime-hunting without his cool five oāclock shadow. So... he decided to ask about the second thing in his mind.Ā āSo...ā He cleared his throat.Ā āYouāve been working for ACME by yourself? Must have been tough...ā The man inquired, indirectly wondering if she got assigned with a new partner.

Carmen faked a cough to cover the chuckle that bubbled its way forth. She couldnāt help it ā the conversation was just so bizarre. She had anticipated him to get frustrated with her odd question, but he actually seemed to have taken it unexpectedly seriously.
Aside from his motive for being so obsessed with catching her, if it wasnāt just his own ego wanting to be the one to catch such an elusive thief, she wasnāt sure what he would know that she didnāt. That could give her an entertaining way to get him talking for a bit, though⦠if she asked something heād be willing to answer. His motive and anything about A.C.M.E. was unlikely to be answered if asked so directly, she could only assume.

āWhatās your favorite place in France? I mean, so many of the popular locations are mostly geared toward tourists nowā¦ā she said, deciding on a complete non-sequitur. ThereĀ were many ways this could go ā Chaseās impulsiveness made him quite unpredictable for her at times.
Chase squinted at the womanās answer, really annoyed at the sudden change of subject. She keeps playing him like a fiddle, constantly making fun of his very serious hunts, and now sheās ridiculing this interrogation despite the fact he actually captured her. Not even after his reat achievement the woman would shed a tinge of respect for her mortal rival.Ā āStop right there! The last thing I need is some monologue educatingĀ ābout some useless fact about France history!ā He made a talking motion with his hand as if mocking the constant talk about countriesā culture, honestly, he hears enough of that from his partner.Ā āBlah blah did you know that Monaco is the blah of the blah who cares?! I donāt need to hear about that!ā
āWhat I need to hear is your confession!ā Chase wouldnāt let her lead him astray again, the man might have a short attentin-span most of the time, especially aboutĀ things like history, but he was devoted to his job! For the sake of the world, and for the sake of all the cheese he can eat, he will make the rouge confess.Ā āAdmit it! Youāve been working for VILE all this time! And not only that, youāve brainwashed my partner, Ms. Argent into working for you!ā That part was especially important to Chase, if he could hear her confession, then Ms. Argent wouldnāt have to face any jailtime, plus, he could rub on her face that he was right all along.Ā āYou used all that useless intellectual talk and that cool hat to charm her into working for you!ā

I know that you know what you know.Ā Carmen bit back a chuckle, wondering how much of this was a bluff.
Much as she didnāt view the man as a threat, she felt her heart rate spike when he took out her only connection to Player. She had known it was likely to be an option and prepared ahead of time. What she hadnāt prepared for were these A.C.M.E. handcuffs that she didnāt know how to get out of. She trusted her team to handle the V.I.L.E. operatives as long as she kept Devineaux in one consistent location, but her position was becoming more vulnerable with each development. Still, it wasnāt like she was entirely incapable of defending herself while handcuffed. It just meant Player couldnāt track her location and she had no way to send out a distress signal if she found herself really in a pinch.

But she trusted her crew. And she should be able to handle herself with Chase⦠She felt pretty confident in that. Her position was definitely not advantageous at this point, but it was manageable. Holding onto those reminders helped calm her back down.
āWell, I do know the things that I know. Would you like to hear something I donāt know?āĀ She paused for a moment, raising her eyebrow as if to invite him to ask. Mostly, she was testing how much leeway she was likely to get. If she got him too frustrated, she couldnāt know for sure that he wouldnāt just ship her off to the rest of A.C.M.E. That was the one thing she really needed to avoid. So it was a dance ā she needed to give him enough information to keep him asking questions, but not so much that she was putting him in more danger.
āIām sick of your mind games! I know you wouldn`t be able to tell me things that you donāt know, because you donāt know them! Unless...ā The man put his hand on the table in front of the woman in red, his eyes glaring at her. He couldnāt let her get into his mind. The Frenchman isĀ aware of her schemes and clever plans, he had to be thrice as smart as to not get bamboozled by her again.Ā He had... to think like a thief.Ā āUnless... youāre saying you might not know something that I know.āĀ
Weird wordplay aside, this could actually prove to be advantageous to the former Interpol agent, if he finds out what she doesnāt know, he might get the upperhand in other areas, who knows, he could end up getting her little earpiece friends as well. Plus, this might give him a chance to boast atg the fact he knows something the oh so clever Femme Rouge donāt, and he canāt pass up the opportunity.
āWhat is it that you donāt know? And you better not know them!!!ā He slammed his hand on the table as he kept glaring at the young woman before him.

šš¦š¢š¤šµšŖš·š¢šµš¦š„? š š®š¦šÆš¢š¤š¦ā¦? Julia felt ill.Ā
She was finally starting to shake out of her surprise, shock quickly giving way to exasperation- to frustration- to š¢šÆšØš¦š³.Ā
So he had finally factored VILE- the mysterious third party- into his thinking, but had somehow gotten it all wrong. šš šš¢š§. The man had a brilliant deductive mind, she couldnāt fault him for that, but his ego- š©šŖš“ š¦šØš° always seemed to obstruct the truth from him. Paired with the fact that he had almost no self-awareness, he was- he was a danger to himself, to the missionā¦and Chief had given him his job back? ššÆ šµš©šŖš“ š“šµš¢šµš¦?Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āšš!ā The force and volume of her outburst surprised her, but there was no going back now.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āšš°, Agent Devineaux, we are šÆš°šµ back in business. š š¦š“, you are my partner, šŗš¦š“, youāve been reinstated as an ACME operative, and, šŗš¦š“, I am happy to see you after all these months, but I ššš§š§šØš work with you when you are like- like šµš©šŖš“!ā She gestured to, well, all of him.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āYour hairās a mess, the bags under your eyes indicate you havenāt been sleeping well, and you ran out of the house š±š¢š³šµšŖš¢šššŗ š“š©š¢š·ļæ½ļ潚„!ā And she hadnāt even gotten started on everything wrong with his Carmen Sandiego theory.Ā āI am your partner, and I am- I am š¬ššš«šš, Devineaux, I am worried above all else for your š±š©šŗš“šŖš¤š¢š and š®š¦šÆšµš¢š well being.āĀ
His eyebrows raised at the sound of this rather unfamiliar sound: An furious Julia Argent.
Thorough all this time that Chase has worked with Ms. Argent, she`s always been theĀ collected type, even in her frustation, the lady have never much of raised her voice at him, or anyone before. To see her have such an outburst... it took the man a little while to quite process it to be perfectly honest. So he simply stood in silence for a couple of seconds.
Once the man absorbed those words, he quietly rubbed his hand over the shaved part of his face, feeling the dry skin underneath his fingers, then looking down to his crumpled up clothing, and... for the first time in a long time, Chase felt something he hasn`t felt something rather uncommon for him: Shame.Ā
Ms. Argent might be kind of a know it all bookworm, and their constant confrontations regarding Carmen Sandiego could be truly aggravating, but in the end, Chase truly viewed her as his partner, and... as sad that may be, kind of a friend. So to hear her being actually scared was well... it didn`t feel great.Ā āI... I suppose I couldāve at least finish shaving...ā
āAnd I probably shouldāve worn some shoes too.ā He looked down on his feet, wiggling his toes due to the cold asphalt... Dear god, how did the great Interpol Agent Chase Devineaux fell so hard from grace?Ā āje suis dĆ©solĆ©, Ms. Argent, I`ll just go tidy myself up and we can talk more about Carmen and... our partnership...ā
Chase turned his back to the woman and slowly start to walk away, his body hunched over, clearly ashamed. However, he stopped on his tracks after a few steps, looking back at the woman.Ā āCould you give me a ride home? I have no idea where I am right now.ā Chase honestly just used ACMEās tracking device to search for Argent, so the french man barely paid attention to his surroundings.

She was caught slightly by surprise that he actually knew that much. No wonder V.I.L.E. was after him twice as hard. Still, she needed to buy more time, and she didnāt want to tell him more information that he could use to get himself into even more danger⦠again.

āAn island⦠thatās not there anymore?ā she repeated, raising her eyebrow as she continued to play dumb.Ā āWhat happened to it?ā
āOho, very clever, Carmen Sandiego! But I know that you know what you know!ā He stated in a failed attempt to sound clever.Ā āYou`re going to tell me what happened to the island, and the current location of VILE! Right after you confessed to be working for them!ā Chase wasn`t going to underestimate Carmen anymore, not when she humiliated him so... so many times over.Ā
This woman have been a thorn on his side ever since he first met her, constantly slipping away, mocking him at every turn, making his own partner betray him! No, this time, Chase got the upper-hand, and he`s going to use to prove once and for all that he was right all along, and show Ms. Argent the correct path!Ā
Chase approached the girl, ready to shout more until he notices a small piece of hardware hidden inside the Femme Rouge`s ear.Ā āWhat`s this?ā Without any warning, the man pulls out the piece of equipment, at a closer look the man is able to discern that it is a earpiece.Ā āWere you trying to call your thieving friends?ā
āNice try Rouge, but the only call youāll get is the one inside a prison!ā He put the earpiecer into his coat.Ā āNow answer the question! You`re working with VILE arenāt you?!ā

This was a man possessed- or, well, Chase had always been possessed, but Julia had never seen her partner soā¦š®š§š«ššÆšš„šš before. Insistent, dogged, tunnel-visioned, certainly, but never so close to š©šŗš“šµš¦š³šŖš¤š“. Had he actually discovered VILEās headquarters and gone without backup, without preparation, šøšŖšµš©š°š¶šµ š¢ šøš¢šŗ šµš° š¤š°š®š®š¶šÆšŖš¤š¢šµš¦?Ā
Not that she had been allowed to check in on him after the incident in Poitiers. Her mouth pulled into a taught line as Devineaux continued to ramble on aboutā¦well, šøš©š¢šµ exactly Julia couldnāt say for certain. He seemed to be speaking himself in circles over this scrap of- šøš¢š“ šµš©š¢šµ š¢ š®š¢š±? Or part of one; a section of open ocean with the occasional doting of islands, and he wasnāt pointing to any of those.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āā¦sirā¦?āĀ
As Chase continued on his tangent, Julia found herself shrinking back into her default posture; shoulders squared, arms tight against her sides, smaller and smaller.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āIā¦slow down, please! š š„š°šÆāšµ š¬šÆš°šø šøš©š¢šµ šŗš°š¶āš³š¦ šØš°šŖšÆšØ š°šÆ š¢š£š°š¶šµ. Iām not even supposed to be speaking with you- if the Chief were to find out-!āĀ
The man rolled his eyes at his former partner cautious demeanor, it seems that her constant need to be a stickler for the rules hasn`t changed after all. āThe Chief is fine, Ms. Argent! I got reactvated as an ACME agent! Look!ā He pulled out a crumpled up ACME card, despite the bad conditions, it was clear that the card was brand new. The man wore a satisfied smile under his badly shaved face, now giving tiny kisses on the crumpled card, putting it away right afterwards.Ā āThey have finally figured out that I was right all along and that Carmen Sandiego is a menace to people around the world.ā
āThey said something about La Femme Rouge crossing the line and that they need MY expertise to catch her.ā He pointed at himself as he spoke with a boasting tone and a smug smile. It was only a matter of time really, such a stuffy organization wouldn`t have the right gung-ho skills that it takes to arrest someone as cunning as the red thief, Ms. ArgentĀ might know a lot about books, and facts and have all of that knowledge, but she lacked the one thing he has: His gung-ho attitude and willingness to destroy company property.
āYou know what that means Ms. Argent? Weāre back in business.ā He lifted a fist, brows furrowed, showing how determined he is to his goal.Ā āAnd weāre better than ever! Because now you believe in me, right?ā It would only make sense for his former partner to trust him now, right? If the biggest organization that fights crime is on his side, no doubt that his trusted, if a bit misguised partner, should trust him now.

Shocked did not even š£š¦šØšŖšÆ to describe Juliaās reaction to the bedraggled man who had leapt into her path. A hand instinctively reached for the gas gun at her hip, stopping only when she realized- šš”šš šÆšØš¢ššā¦!
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āā¦šæšš«šš£šššŖš?!ā She rushed up to her partner, shoving the piece of paper he clutched so desperately in his hand out of the way to better examine his physical state.Ā āWhat on š¦š¢š³šµš© happened to you?ā
āI was stranded on an island with no fuel or Wi-Fi so I ha-BUT NEVERMIND THAT!ā The man held a rather manic smile on his face, shoving the piece of paper with nothing on it back to the womanās face. Oh how happy he was right now, he got his ACME license reinstated with an apology for dismissing him at first, heās back on chasing Carmen Sandiego once again, and now heās finally showing his former partner Argent that he was right all along. He got giddy at the prospect of showing her that he was right that once ACME got him reinstated, he didnāt even finish shaving himself.Ā āVoilĆ”!ā
āYou see this empty map? Well... this whooooole thing right there... there was an island. What kind of island you ask? Nice question, Ms. Argentā He puts his arms behind his back, not even waiting for the woman to chime in. āYou see, ever since Iāve been kicked out of your fancy ACME withĀ the suits and the cars, Iāve been doing some investigating myself! And I found out, with no help-ā Dream Argent excluded.Ā ā-that the island thatās NOT HERE!ā He pointed at the empty map once again.Ā āWas V.I.L.Eās main base! The very same group that trained La Femme Rouge!ā
The man turned his body toward Ms. Argent with a twitchy, but proud smile on his face.Ā āWhich MEANS! That Carmen Sandiego is ACTUALLY a realĀ femme malfaisante! And I can say with 100% certainty, because of the island thatās not here!ā He pointed at the map again.Ā āYou see, Ms. Argent! I was correct the entire time! And now we can finally catch Carmen together as a team!ā

āNon Ms. Adora! I am not okay! You wish to know WHY am I not okay?āĀ
The man inquired with a strong foreign accent and clear hint annoyance in his voice. The male had rigid features, quite different from how soft and jovial the entire Kingdom of princesses is.
āIāve been working as an undercover spy for the Kingdom for over 10 years, infiltrated among the ranks of the Horde, only to come back to find out some enfant from said Horde is now considered a classical hero due to some... historian nonsense about a valkyrie who has long passed away! THIS is why I am not okay Ms. Adora!ā
Chase kept his gaze fixated upon the lady, as if watching her every move, you could see by his tired expression and sloppily made beard that the time he spent at the Horde was far from pleasant.
āYou might have had everyone fooled with your big sword and garish tiara! But Iāve seen the atrocities the Horde committed! The many innocents who suffered at their hands! The lost homes! The lack of monetary compensation for overtime!ā His tone got more and more angry with each example.Ā āI can say with the utmost confidence that no good comes from the Horde!ā
āI got my eye on you, Ms. Adora!ā
