While planning our wedding, one of the things we were keen on meticulously choosing are the songs that best fit our relationship.  As everyone knows, there are very limited wedding songs that cater to the same-sex marriage.

These songs we’re likely to use for the wedding or the honeymoon. *wink*

Here are the reasons why…

Forever Starts Today by Tim Halperin.

All the world is ours to take You and me, we’ll find a way Oh the wonder that awaits Here we are Forever starts today

Clearly, this is the “walk-in-the-isle” song. It’s like heading towards something great and amazing and being ecstatic about it. I also like how this song defines marriage as an adventure and seeing married life as being pleasantly imperfect journey of happiness.

I Choose You by Sara Bareilles

Let the bough break, let it come down crashing Let the sun fade out to a dark sky I can’t say I’d even notice it was absent ‘Cause I could live by the light in your eyes 

This is one of my personal favorites. Apart from the song being utterly applicable for gays, with the lack of pronoun-usage, I like how the lyrics tell everyone that regardless of the bad things, of the cynicism of others, of the fear of love and commitment, someone is willing to choose you over and over again because they love you. 

Perfect by Ed Sheeran

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight 

We all know how Ed Sheeran is able to knock very lady off of their feet - gay or not. Every time this song is played, my mind just wanders off to H. How she always says that she looks like a mess but I only see someone really beautiful. ♥

This is the song I used on the proposal video to H. And the above lines on this song is so true for me and H. The entire time she looks at me, whatever mood I’m in, it just changes! Even in the most depressing and miserable days, one look from her melts my heart and heals my ailing feelings.

I guess I’ve always known that my The One is H the moment I laid eyes on her. Things hadn’t always been easy for us. We went through ups and downs in a brutal roller coaster ride, but when we face all of the challenges together there’s nothing we couldn’t surpass.

Okay, another Ed Sheeran song. Yes, I am a fan - definitely a fan! Who wouldn’t fall in love with this song though? Now I think back on the stolen glances and kisses and subtle hints of showing interests the moment you knew you wanted to be with that person, this is definitely the background music. And every day since the day you met, not a day went by that you don’t fall in love with the person over and over again!

From The Ground Up by Dan+Shay

The title alone says a lot. Everything built together from scratch would hold more meaning to relationship! Building a house, a family, a future together would ensure a bond that will never be broken come rain or shine. Although there’s part of the song that says “I’ll be the man your dad hoped I’d be…” I’m just choosing to look past that and just enjoy the rest of the lyrics.

Smile by Uncle Kracker

Truly, she does. She makes me do a lot of stupid things just so I see that smile on her face thus bringing a smile on mine, too. Even with just one look at her, I’m all smiles already. A kiss, a hug, an “I love you” could already send me up on the horizons shooting down like a falling star if it would make any of her wishes come true. Luckily, I guess me as the shooting star falling head over heels for her is a wish that’d come true.

She Keeps Me Warm by Mary Lambert

She says I smell like safety and home I named both of her eyes forever and please don’t go I could be a morning sunrise all the time, all the time yeah This could be good, this could be good

I love this line from Mary Lambert, because I’ve always loved H’s smell! It really does smell like safety and home. Anywhere we are, as long as I get to smell her, it’s as if I’m home and I can do whatever wherever we are. The title alone already says a lot - it’s the feeling of security and belonging that no luxury or comfort could ever match , not if you don’t get to share it with the person you love.

This song is the closest to how I feel about myself when I’m with H. That feeling that you know you are the best version of yourself because in her eyes, your invincible and the way she supports you, you feel like you can conquer anything the world throws at you.  I believe it has a lot to do with H having so much faith in me and having only seen it through her eyes. She needn’t say anything, I just look into her eyes and I know I can do and can be anything I want to be.

I’m Gonna Love You by Jennifer Love Hewitt

It didn’t start this way It happened just one day You smiled at me and I saw you differently Now I would tremble just to be A part of you as we Begin a life that’s sure to never end

It’s a little cheesy and definitely heterosexual, unless you close your eyes and pretend that the one singing is Sam Smith (I wish!). This song is a good background music to look back on how things started with the person you love.  Having met someone who’s helped you open your eyes to see things in a different perspective and not being able to imagine life without that person. This is not an absolute favorite of mine but the rhythm though…

This definitely has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. The song is about not knowing that you can love someone so much more you think you could and more than you already have. The song itself is a story of how you think you already love someone so much already and yet you’ve grown to love them more and more each day.

Love Someone by Brett Eldredge

I like this song because it showcases how someone can find love in the simplest of gestures. Loving someone isn’t only about these grand acts of love. It is found in the simplest forms. The way you look at each other, your compromises on the littlest things or even by watching a movie you absolutely find boring but agreeing anyway because the person you love wants to see it. It doesn’t only feel good to love, it feels just as great to love someone.

I made the list so I can look back on this day knowing that both H and I are so committed to this relationship to the extent of actually choosing the songs for our wedding selectively. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more songs out there that fits a wedding, may it be heterosexual ones or not. There’s just so much love within us that we want to share with the world some songs that could help you translate how you feel about someone by letting them listen to these songs if you’re too caught up with words to even begin to speak. Let your heart flow through music.
