Keep thinking about how literally no one understands dyslexia and this essay’s triggering me so I’m gonna vent/explain it.

Most people just think dyslexia is reading slow and yeah Thats people’s biggest clue to having it (as well as poor spelling, mispronunciation, forgetting words regularly, struggle to absorb sentences, time management issues, poor memory) but it’s not the part that makes it difficult.

Let’s say you have dyslexia and you want to learn how to make an omelette. Someone explains it to you like “well it’s easy, you just whip a bowl of eggs, poor it in a pan, add cheese and whatever you want on it, when you see the bottom is cooked you fold it and ya basically done” and you reiterate it “ok, so I just whip some eggs, poor it in a pan, put whatever on it, and flip it when it’s ready?” And they say “yup! Thats it”.

But despite that, you still don’t know how to make an omelette.

Because no matter how well you understand the steps, without hands on experience it’ll never fully make sense to you. Is there a right and wrong way to whip eggs? How many eggs? What should I NOT add? How cooked is considered ready? Is it easy to mess up the fold? Do I need a specific technique to master the fold? Will it not rip down the middle? Can it be crunchy? How do you tell if the insides cooked?

All those questions don’t matter, but you can’t ignore them in order to get started, which makes doing anything for the first time extremely stressful.

And that’s just cooking an egg pancake, imagine trying to understand a school assignment or a new job (Where those small details actually do matter but they don’t tell you)

The real rout of dyslexia is issue with decoding. Not just reading.

At least Thats my experience with it. But I hear it’s common for dyslexia to cause related anxiety issues.
