Okay the thing about space marines is like. they are huge mammals, practically bear sized, active primates. On top of the normal caloric needs for a large animal to be active and fast for so long, their bodies are constantly bioactive- they produce corrosive salive, they're conatantly healing from horrible wounds- those proteins are expensive and that mass has to come from somewhere. And don't fucking "oh genetic engineering they're so perfect" me, you can only be SO bioeffecient, these are still modified humans, presumably you're not recreating their biomolecular structure.
They have to eat a TON right? They probably have the caloric and vitamin demands of a pregnant tiger, and there's hundreds of them on these ships. Are there spaceship cows tgey're slaughtering? Do they just guzzle gallons of reconstituted protein paste?
And I think this caloric need, if emphasized, only helps accentuate the fact that a Space Marine is only as good as his supplies, as the labor done by the citizen-slaves of the Imperium- whether their work is tithed to loyalists or raided by traitors. And the inequality is the point, the irony that these superhuman gods NEED the work of hundreds of human laborers to survive- that's so important! That's the evil of the imperium, the hypocracy of power!
Space Marines should be ravenous little fuckers. Show them eating more.

for the warhammer prompts; clone!Fulgrim having a nice day, and perhaps a cute little pastry and some tea in a dainty little cup
Enjoy!
Fulgrim was bored.
He had read all of the books and manuscripts in Teacher's laboratory several times over. Then, to amuse himself and perfect his handwriting, translated them into three variants of Chemosian. He considered Medusan, but by that time he had run out of ink.
He had already explored every nook and cranny of the lab. Even the forbidden storage areas. There were some fixtures which he assumed were meant to alert Teacher to any such intrusion, but all were easily dismantled and reassembled without leaving a clue. In a dark, dusty cupboard he found something which brought a smile to his lips with its sheer incongruity: a tea set.
Most of the china cups were sadly chipped, save one. He carefully washed it, holding it up to the lumen light like a rescued treasure. It was beautifully patterned in calligraphic gold.
An idea struck him, which soon found him making his way through the cobwebbed ducts to the ship's kitchen. It was a journey he had made before, watching the serfs and others through the duct grille in fascination. At this dead hour of ship time, the kitchens were safely deserted. He slipped the bounty into a hessian sack and departed like a ghost.
His task back in the lab took half a day. But utterly absorbed, he did not notice the passage of time. Long ivory hair tied back to work, he painstakingly cleaned and repurposed a small incinerator. Next he found various tools suitable to the main stage of his task, and laid them out neatly on his polished workbench.
One hour later, Fulgrim sat back in his chair, a contented smile on his face. In one hand was a cup of steaming tea. The handle was comically small for his physique, so he was obliged to hold it daintily between two fingers. He breathed in the scent and sighed.
In front of him on the bench was a finely patterned plate, currently holding a warm, flaky chocolate pastry.
It was nice to have a treat.
