I finally finished my exams!

I can finally begin the projects I've planned, beginning and prioritising the Mystic Messenger Archive I wanted to make.

(Hopefully making time for fanfictions and other stuff too)

Regarding the archive, it will detail all the characters, routes (chatrooms, phone calls, emails), game and development timelines, general mechanics/ tips/ walkthroughs of the game, e.c.t. I'm still planning all the content to be included and planning my attempt of transcripting the chatrooms, story modes, phone calls, and emails. (Keyword: attempt lol)

I'll try to replay and complete the game in the coming months to do the transcripts and descriptions in the archive. Obviously, I am trying to do this as unbiasedly as possible so I can complete this project with the utmost respect and integrity to the game and developers. Including references for everything I write.

I don't know if/how I'll share the archive when I'm done, I obviously don't want to be hit with copyright claims or something; but ideally I want to make the archive accessible to everyone. I'll figure out this aspect as I go.

I'll update the progress of the project both on here, and on Instagram.

I doubt I can finish this before September, especially since completing the game itself will be longgg, knowing that there are 7 routes that are 11 days long, multiple endings for each route, the DLCs and after endings. I'll try to complete as much of this project as I can until September, and then hopefully try to slowly finish it throughout next year :)

Unfixable (Shades of Cool demo), 2014

I tried not to quote Million Dollar Man immediately, hehe. Anyway~ starting off strong, I wanted to play off the complexity of Jumin's loneliness and the way his upbringing had caused him to struggle making relationships, trapping him into his own bubble of forced independence and untouchable status. Knowing how his demeanour comes off as cool and nonchalant, there is a deep need for vulnerability, loyalty, and understanding. Which comes through not only in this song and the official release of Shades of Cool, but with other songs that have the intricate world-building that is unique to Lana. Much like the intricacies of what is necessary for Jumin to succeed in his role as an heir, like how he's always been expected to.

Honeymoon

In terms of Jumin's route and his journey to falling in love for the first time, the idyllic yet carefully crafted world of Honeymoon perfectly parallels the type of rose-tinted world that he'd fall into. Finding his partner not only the embodiment of heaven on earth, but as an escape from the vapid relationships he was accustomed to in the business world. His strong romantic tendencies and his gentlemanly demeanour reflect the type of old-money illusion of a honeymoon in Western Europe. Italian Rivieras and French countrysides, accompanied by wine and old novels in the bright sunshine. The other side of the coin to his polished modernism over urban nightscapes. Similarly to how he seeks fantasy as an escape in his bad ending, yet more subtly represented. As we know, he likes control, and being able to construct the narrative of his love and, in turn, imprint himself on his lover and vice versa, is a great desire. Which is shown in songs like Religion and Salvatore.

Early Lana, in the depths of her world-building endeavours, quite clearly represents complex characters/ characters with meticulous personas like the Choi twins and Jumin. Jumin, in particular, directly plays into the old Hollywood side of Lana, with its flair of soothing Jazz, winding strings and intentional yet subtle glamour. Born To Die songs like Million Dollar Man and National Anthem capture both the luxury and darkness found by the side of high-status men.

Though I also chose songs that highlight his struggle in love, inspired by his previous feelings for Rika. Not regarding her specifically, but rather his need to be loved the way he never got the chance to be in his childhood. Like in the song The Other Woman, the act of being desired and lusted after contrasts with the actual nature of love. Having been desired all his life for his money and looks, but never having had someone who wanted to understand and love him. Much like "the other woman". This theme, paired with his isolation, continues into songs like Young and Beautiful and The Blackest Day.

The song's ties to David Bowie, this bridge, all remind me of Seven. In particular, it reminds me of how stubborn he is in protecting what he loves; not to mention how he regularly uses space as a metaphor to escape his harsh reality. It can be interpreted both as a lover trying to break through to Seven, during his depression or self-made isolation (or the 4th wall), or it can be seen as Seven trying to reach out to his brother after the Mint Eye fiasco. I'd like to think I'm singing to Seven, like a cute little response to how he sings to us in the opening. Haha I'm delusional

Born To Die (The Paradise Edition)

Lust for Life

Putting these albums together is ironic, I know. But it works in terms of the idea of Seven moving through life, essentially mourning his own future, his brother, and the luxury of relationships. Where Born to Die encapsulates the motto of Live fast, die young; which works both for his mental state and his work. Vanderwood even comments that Seven lived each day like his last.

Lust for Life represents the changes when he falls in love and finds hope once again, following the themes of both his route and the secret endings. As well as the aesthetic of retro futurism fitting him perfectly, especially in the Love music video. I also had read a headcannon somewhere (I don't remember where) that Zen and Seven LOVE The Weeknd, which honestly fits really well in my opinion^^

Part of me wants to say that a.k.a Lizzy Grant is another album tied to Seven, as alternative sounds and the idea that the album Lana released before fully transforming into Lana Del Rey (the idea of creating personas being similar to Seven), thematically, makes sense to me. But I'm hesitating to say it with certainty, so here are certain songs from that album instead:

I can overall see the idea of dating Seven as thematically similar to a Lana Del Rey summer. Late-night drives, road trips to the beach (Wayamaya style), eating cherries from ice cream sundaes, diner dates with milkshakes and lots of desserts, heart-shaped sunglasses. Or maybe that's just my fantasy :P
