The Top Chery In Chinese SUVs
The new Tiggo 8 Pro models bring unparalleled offerings to their class
Chery introduced the upgraded versions of its Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max models to South Africa, at the beginning of August 2023. The new models boast enhanced features, a refreshed design, and a completely reimagined interior.
Buy the previous derivatives by shopping for a used Chery Tiggo 8.
The Tiggos have unparalleled offerings in their class, featuring luxurious amenities like a panoramic sunroof, full leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and an integrated voice control system as standard features.
The Tiggo 8 Pro model stands out with its distinctive design, setting it apart from other midsize luxury seven-seater SUVs on the road. The Chery logo in the grille is illuminated, gradually using an array of LED lights, giving an impression of coming to life. This lighting sequence is synchronised with the LED Matrix headlamps and LED daytime running lights.
The rear of the vehicle features light clusters connected by a striking LED light bar. During the vehicle start-up sequence, the rear lights illuminate from the centre light bar to the lower edges of the tail lamps.
The interior of the Tiggo 8 models ushers in a new era of luxury and sophistication in its price range. This car has one of the most prominent digital screen displays, spanning 24.7 inches in length. The screen in front of the driver presents essential vehicle information and speed, while the right section handles infotainment controls.
The climate control experience has been elevated, with every row equipped with its air conditioning controls. Front-row occupants are treated to a dual-zone independent climate control system for added comfort. The air quality system now includes an ion sensor that activates the purifying system when polluted air is detected. Notably, the air quality within the Tiggo 8 Pro range is N95 certified, boasting cleanliness akin to that of a surgical operating room.
The centre console has conveniently positioned cup holders, and a fast 50W wireless phone charging pad, with an air vent to keep the phone from overheating while charging. Every Tiggo 8 comes standard with wireless Apple Car Play or Android Auto. This adds to the convenience of not having to carry cables for charging or connection to Apple Car Play or Android Auto.
The sound system in the vehicle is supplied by Sony. Comprehensive voice controls to the soothing voice of “Hello Chery” allows one to open or close the sunroof, play music, navigate or make calls on command. The Tiggo 8s are equipped with a total of four USB ports, equally distributed between Type A and Type C connections and shared between the front and middle row seats. This makes a welcome change from other brands that either have Type A or Type C.
The front seats are equipped with both cooling and heating systems, which also fall under the voice commands. This is ideal for ever-changing weather conditions in South Africa.
Another convenient feature allows the user, holding the key, to approach the vehicle’s rear and take a step back, prompting the boot to open automatically – this is so useful when carrying bags or groceries
The Tiggo 8 Pro Max is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, encompassing over 10 intelligent driving assistance functions, like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. The vehicle is equipped not only to assist the driver but also to interact with passengers, pedestrians, and other vehicles. For instance, if the vehicle detects a nearby car in a risky situation during an emergency manoeuvre, it can activate its hazards to warn the other vehicle.
The system also monitors both sides of the vehicle and alerts occupants if it senses an approaching car, indicated by a red ring light around the door-mounted speakers.
If there is any criticism of the car, it would be that the onboard navigation system, as with any other car that has built-in mapping, is not as good as what your phone can deliver.
Buyers of the Tiggo 8 Pro receive a 5-year / 60,000 km service plan and a 5-year / 150,000 km comprehensive mechanical warranty. Opting for the Tiggo 8 Pro Max awards buyers with a 7-year / 90,000 km service plan and the same mechanical warranty.
Chery’s exceptional engine warranty offers 10 years or 1 million kilometres of worry-free driving.
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro lineup comprises two models:
Tiggo 8 Pro 1.6T Executive: R609,900
Tiggo 8 Pro MAX 2.0T Executive: R669,900
By now you can find one of these new models among older versions of the Chery Tiggo 8 for sale by browsing used Tiggo 8 SUVs here now.

Chery’s 2.0 TDGI Tiggo 8 Pro MAX Flagship SUV
The Tiggo nameplate cemented the Chery firm as a force to be reckoned with in the local SUV market. Broadening and bolstering the offering of its Tiggo 8 nameplate is the rowdier Tiggo 8 Pro MAX off-shoot.
Following a warm reception of the Tiggo lineup, Chery has expanded the Tiggo stables workhorses. “The Tiggo 8 Pro has been one of Chery’s top-selling vehicles across the world. It has recently surpassed 500 000 sales to become the first Chinese medium-sized SUV and first 7-seater SUV to hit this milestone.” — Chery South Africa, Deputy Executive General Manager Tony Liu
The Chery Tiggo 8 2023, the MAX, shares the skeleton of the base Tiggo 8 Pro, except with a beefier engine, a litany of creature comforts and safety innovations — and an inflated price tag. The most notable differentiating feature of the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX is its powerplant. Dropping the base model 1,6-litre four-cylinder in exchange for Chery’s 2,0-litre TDGI engine affording the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX a maximum output of 187 kW @ 5 500 rpm and 390 Nm available from 2 000 rpm to 4 000rpm. For respective, the Tiggo 8 Pro 1,6 TDGI Executive has an output of 145 kW and 290 N.m.
To compliment a more powerful engine, Chery has added to the 2023 range of Tiggo 8 Pro Executive’s luxury/comfort and safety offerings. Aside from the Executive’s features, the athletic Tiggo sibling is equipped with privacy glass in the rear passenger compartment, an upgraded windscreen, and improved soft-dampening components. Chery promises that Future Executive models will be outfitted with privacy glass as standard. The Tiggo 8 Pro MAX strays away from the Executive’s tan interior and offers a black leather interior. The 8 Pro MAX, sees the inclusion of a wider variety of driver assistance systems.
The MY2023 Tiggo 8 Pro MAX is accompanied by a 7-year/90 000 km service plan and a 10-year/1 000 000 km warranty.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX Wins SA People’s Choice
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX won the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice award at the 2023 Car of the Year gala.
The flagship Chery Tiggo 8 was chosen as the 2023 Motor Enthusiast’s Choice at the Car of the Year awards.
The Award means that the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX received the most votes from the public as their Car of the Year choice for 2023.
“We are overjoyed by our award. The announcement is a clear endorsement of our Tiggo 8 Pro and its popularity among South African motorists.”
Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max Success
The Motor Enthusiast’s Choice Award mirrors Chery’s success in the retail market. From an unknown entity late in 2021, Chery has grown rapidly to become a regular member of the Top 10 list of best-selling vehicle brands in the country.
Year to date, Chery has sold 6 600 new Tiggo models in South Africa and close to 20 000 units since commencing operations in South Africa. On a global scale, Chery has sold over 450 000 new cars in the first quarter of 2023, setting a record and further affirming Chery’s position as the top-selling Chinese exporter in the world. It has held this position for the past 21 years.
“It is heartening to see how well Chery has been accepted in South Africa. The Tiggo 4 Pro is one of the best-selling passenger vehicles in the country and both the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro are among the top-sellers in their categories,” says Liu.
Chery’s success in the local vehicle market is not without reason. Since introducing its very first model, Chery has offered each owner a comprehensive mechanical warranty and service plan that include a 1 million kilometre / 10-year engine warranty.
The company later backed up this promise by investing in a larger, state-of-the-art warehouse, from where it ships parts to every dealer, every day.
Chery also impressed buyers and fans alike with its new, innovative Chery Cares programme, which includes 24/7 roadside assistance and a host of services, including scratch and dent repair, rim repair, drive-me-home chauffeur services and even windscreen replacement as part of the purchase price.
Returning to last night’s winner – the Tiggo 8 Pro Max – the public appears to have given its thumbs up to this flagship SUV that offers everything in terms of power, performance, luxury features and space, without the punishing price tag of many of its competitors.
The flagship Tiggo 8 Pro MAX model is fitted with a 2-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine that delivers a powerful 187 kW and 390 Nm of torque. The engine uses the most modern engineering in the Chery Group, such as direct injection, lightweight moulding, intelligent engine management and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to offer class-leading performance at a very competitive price. “The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX was not only the most powerful finalist in the Midsize Vehicle Category in this year’s Car of the Year competition, but also one of the best-specified vehicles outright.”
As the flagship of the entire Chery range in South Africa, the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX includes virtually every creature comfort and luxury feature that one can expect in this class of vehicle. This includes a large panoramic sunroof, six omnidirectional airbags, automatic adaptive LED headlights, an intelligent voice command system and one of the largest touch-screen high-resolution infotainment systems in the industry.
The Tiggo 8 Pro MAX is also fitted with a complete range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, a full 360-degree camera system, Front Collision Warning and Intelligent High Beam Control.
Add to this list a best-in-class interior with seven seats, an intelligent all-wheel drive system, one of the strongest safety cells of any midsized SUV and a high-performance engine and you have a vehicle unmatched in its category.

“The Tiggo 8 Pro MAX is a perfect example of our approach to the market. Many manufacturers advertise a list price that offers virtually no luxury features to lure buyers onto the showroom floor, only to burden them with a long list of expensive addons and features.”
“In contrast, the Tiggo 8 Pro is fitted with all the luxury features as standard, and the buyer is only left with one option, their choice of colour.”
“We would like to thank all the journalists and the public that voted for Chery and the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX as the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice. We cannot wait to welcome more people into our showrooms and introduce them to the South African Motor Enthusiast’s Choice!”
Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro In South Africa May Get An Update Soon
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which is the Chinese brand’s flagship SUV in South Africa, is set to receive a minor makeover. The new model is due to reach our shores in July 2023, and IOL contributor Justin Jacobs spotted one at the Shanghai Auto Show and also received confirmation that the revised model is heading our way shortly. Although the visual updates are subtle, to say the least, the 2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro receives a new grille with an illuminated badge, as well as a revised facia. Chery South Africa also confirmed that an all-wheel drive version will join the line-up at a later stage. The Tiggo 8 is currently offered in front-wheel drive guise only, and buyers can currently choose between two turbo-petrol engine options in the form of a 1.6-litre that produces 145kW and a 2.0-litre that’s good for 187kW. Find a Chery Tiggo 8 Pro demo for sale today!

It’s likely that these options will carry over into the facelifted model. However, it’s unlikely to stray too far from the demo version, which is competitively priced between R496 900 and R629 300. After re-entering the South African market in late 2021, Chery has become one of the top 10 brands in terms of passenger vehicle sales, with new and demo models of the Tiggo 8 Pro contributing between 150 and 200 units to the tally in most months. . . . . . Blossoming Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Plugs The Gap Between Small And Large SUVs

The Chery Tiggo 7 for sale slots in between the Tiggo 4 Pro and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro and offers a comprehensive range of specifications, above-average luxury and the modern technology that Chery has become known for in South Africa.
Currently in its second generation, the Tiggo 7 Pro arrived three years after debuting at the Guangzhou International Auto Show brandishing not only Chery’s current styling language but also being underpinned by the T1X platform both the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro ride on.
Like the former, the Tiggo 7 Pro has seating for five and measures 4 500 mm in overall length with its wheelbase stretching 2 670 mm. The claimed width is 1 842 mm and height 1 746 mm.
Inside, the interior mirrors that of the Tiggo 8 Pro in that it comes complete with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the Audi-inspired eight-inch touchscreen climate control interface and the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice activation.
As was the case with the Tiggo 8 Pro - the Tiggo 7 Pro for sale in South Africa was among the first right-hand-drive models released in the market, with initial motivation set to come from a single power unit.
Though powered elsewhere by the in-house developed 1.6 T-GDI engine the Tiggo 8 Pro uses, Chery South Africa has opted for the smaller 1.5 T-GDI in the 7 Pro range that produces the same 108kW/210Nm as in higher-spec versions of the Tiggo 4 Pro.
Unlike its smallest sibling though, the Tiggo 7 Pro is not available with a manual gearbox as a CVT is a solitary option. Like the rest of the Chery line-up, the drive is routed to the front wheels only.

Why The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro 1.6L SUV Is An Exceptional Drive
12 Reasons It Delivers The Safest And Most Stress-Free Drive
One of the most crucial aspects in the car-buying decision is safety—especially at a time when people are revenge-travelling and going back to face-to-face work and school.
And we’re not talking about your basic seatbelts, airbags, ABS, and crumple zones. We’re talking about features that will actively protect you and your loved ones by helping avoid or eliminate the risks that can lead to accidents. These are state-of-the-art smart features that will not only help prevent accidents before they happen, they actually help direct you away from situations that can lead to an accident.

This is why Chery has loaded its 7-seater midsized SUV for sale, the Tiggo 8 Pro 1.6 Turbo, with no less than 12 Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS).
1. Rear Cross-Traffic Assist —RCTA alerts you when another vehicle is approaching you just as you reverse out of a parking space
2. Blind Spot Detection—BSD notifies you if a vehicle is approaching your blind spots on either side of your car
3. Autonomous Emergency Braking—AEB automatically activates the brakes once it detects an obstacle and doesn’t receive any braking inputs from the driver
4. Door Opening Warning—When DOW detects an oncoming car from behind as you or your passengers are about to go down from the car, the DOW automatically issues an alert
5. Forward Collision Warning—FCW detects objects ahead and alerts the driver for potential collisions
6. Adaptive Cruise Control—ACC automatically adjusts your vehicle’s speed depending on the speed and distance of the vehicle in front
7. Lane Keeping Assist—LKA helps the driver remain inside the marked lanes, which comes in handy during drives with low visibility or when temporarily blinded by other cars’ high beams
8. Traffic Jam Assist—TJA serves as an extension of cruise control, but works in slow-moving traffic for enhanced comfort in gridlock situations. It will autonomously accelerate and brake the vehicle in traffic.
9. Integrated Cruise Assist—ICA constantly measures the distance to the vehicle in front of you in real-time and automatically maintains a safe distance
10. Intelligent High-Beam Control—IHBC automatically adjusts the headlights to maximize vision even on poorly lit roads
11. Lane Departure Warning—LDW alerts you via an audible alert and force feedback when your vehicle inadvertently drifts to another lane—very helpful when the driver’s alertness is impaired due to fatigue or other factors
12. Traffic Sign Recognition—TSR alerts you when your speed exceeds that of posted speed limits
Over and above these 12 Advanced Driver Assist Systems, this Chery Tiggo 8 for sale offers an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Assist Control (HAC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and ISOFIX child-seat tethers, among others.
With all these smart safety features and Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), the new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro 1.6 Turbo for sale is convincingly one of the safest automobiles on the market.
The Tiggo 8 PRO 1.6T is made even more irresistible with the brand’s industry-leading Chery Premium Preserv consisting of a 7-year engine warranty, 7-year bumper-to-bumper general vehicle warranty, FREE 3-year preventive maintenance service (PMS), and FREE 3-year roadside assistance.
The Chery Tiggo 8 PRO 1.6T has been a recipient of numerous awards and accolades globally and was recently lauded as the Best Midsize Crossover by the respected C! Magazine.

New Chery SUV - Tiggo 9 Pro - Revealed
Featuring styling cues from certain Lincoln models, the 9 Pro Chery Tiggo will reportedly be some 100 mm longer in length than the Tiggo 8 Pro.

Its success outside of China going to grow, especially in South Africa, resurgent Chery will soon officially unveil a new Chery flagship Tiggo SUV expected to the called the Tiggo 9 Pro.
Chinese styling meets German and American
Uncovered without disguise or pre-production body panels by China’s AutoHome, the Tiggo 9 Pro receives the same Mercedes-AMG Panamericana-inspired grille as the recently updated Tiggo 7 Pro, but everything changes from the B-pillar back.
Sporting a side profile similar to the Lincoln Navigator, the Tiggo 9 Pro is also longer, by a speculated 100 mm, with the door handles being pop-out items and the roof lowered at the rear.
The Lincoln-esque touches continue in not only the look of the 20-inch alloy wheels but also the curved bonnet sides that flow into the wings in a style similar not only to the Navigator but also to the smaller Nautilus.
At the rear, the entire rear gets its unique appearance with sharpened-off LED light clusters bearing a resemblance to those of the Audi Q8, connected via a chrome strip as well as an ultra-thin LED light bar running across the tailgate above the chrome Chery logo.
Although no interior images were revealed, reports are the Tiggo 9 Pro’s cabin will be derived from the Omada 5 and the mentioned facelift Tiggo 7 Pro, meaning the inclusion of the dual digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, removal of the Audi-inspired lower climate control panel and more specification items.
Upfront and when?
Set to provide seating for five or seven, motivation is expected to come from the in-house developed 2.0 T-GDI petrol engine that debuted in South Africa earlier this week in the Tiggo 8 Pro Max. This means outputs of 187kW/390Nm are fed to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
According to motor1.com Brazil, certain markets will also be privy to all-wheel-drive, plus a plug-in hybrid model tipped to produce the 236 kW as the Tiggo 7 Pro-plug-in hybrid does. As with the rest of the Tiggo Pro line-up, the Tiggo 9 Pro will be underpinned by Chery’s T1X platform.
Supposedly premiering during the first quarter of next year, expect more details to become apparent next year with the same applying to Chery South Africa’s decision of making the Tiggo 9 Pro available above the Tiggo 8 Pro.

Refreshed Tiggo 4 Pro Range Launched To Fulfill Customer Requests
Chery revised the specification of its Tiggo 4 Pro models for sale.
This SUV went on sale in SA at the end of 2021 and has since done much to re-establish the Chinese marque in the minds of consumers looking to get the most value for their money.
“In November this year, we will celebrate the first full year of sales, but we did not wait for this milestone to collect feedback from our customers,” said Chery SA executive deputy general manager Tony Liu in 2022. “Instead, we have been on the road with dealers and customers to find out what they like, what they would like to change and what more we could offer.”
As such Chery has amended the entire Tiggo 4 Pro model line-up starting with the entry-level Urban derivative that now benefits from an upgraded interior and safety features.
Pre-refresh variants can still be bought as a used Chery Tiggo 4 model and at pretty good prices, considering these models are practically new and only vary with regards to the below updates given in 2022.
The cloth upholstery of old makes way for fresh new vegan leather, which is not only applied to the seats but also the steering wheel and door inlays. This luxurious trim is complemented by a central front armrest, adjustable rear headrests and an inbuilt coat rack. Chery has also bolted in a new driver's seat that boasts six-way manual adjustment.
Added niceties come in the form of remote central locking with remote window closing, a digital tyre pressure monitoring system as well as a voice command for the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that syncs with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety front, customers can look forward to extra airbags (six up from two), new-generation seat belt pre-tensioners and a seat belt reminder for the front passenger seat.
The mid-tier Tiggo 4 Pro Comfort model sports the same specification list as the Urban but comes fitted exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Step inside the flagship Tiggo 4 Pro Elite SE and you will find that Chery has added its radar-equipped Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): a suite of active driver aids that include adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision warning system that monitors traffic flow and pre-empts emergency braking as well as lane-keep and lane departure warning systems. There's also a 360º around-view monitor system for easier manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Pricing for the refreshed 2023 Tiggo 4 Pro model derivatives is as follows:
Urban 1.5 manual: R299,900
Comfort 1.5 CVT: R336,900
Elite 1.5T MT: R346,900
Elite 1.5T CVT: R377,900
Elite 1.5T CVT SE: R399,900

“Chery is wholly committed to South Africa, and it already counts as one of the most active corporate citizens in the automotive industry. We see South Africa as a pivotal market and a valuable entry point into the growing African vehicle market.”
“With this in mind, we are very proud to [have been] a key partner of NAAMSA at the 2022 SA Auto Week,” says Liu.

South Africa’s New Top 10 Passenger Vehicle Brand
According to Naamsa, the automotive business council, Chery’s sales of 1 262 new Tiggo Pro models in July make it the eighth most popular passenger vehicle brand in the country.
Chery South Africa has officially reported its sales numbers to naamsa for the first time in July 2022. This is a mere eight months after it introduced its first SUV, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, in the local market.
Chery entered the new vehicle market in late November 2021 with the Tiggo 4 Pro range. This model range remains the most popular in the Chery line-up thanks to its highly competitive entry price and unmatched level of specifications.
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro joined the line-up in late February 2022, and the newest addition, the Tiggo 7 Pro, only landed on showroom floors in May 2022.
In July, the Tiggo 4 Pro range represented 689 units of the total 1 262 units sold. This ranks it in the top five best-selling SUVs in its segment. In total volume, it is followed by the Tiggo 7 Pro (372 units) and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro (201 units). Both these luxury SUVs now rank first in their respective segments, based on sales.
“Chery’s sales performance is a tribute to our dealer network, which has been our greatest ambassador and which has been exemplary in its treatment of our Chery customers,” said Jay Jay Botes, national sales manager of Chery South Africa.
According to Botes, all of Chery’s sales were made through the dealer network and not as bulk sales to fleet or rental companies. This means that the total sales figure is a perfect representation of Chery’s acceptance by South African motorists.
“We realise that South Africans are under significant economic pressure and that they need the best possible value for money when buying a vehicle. That is why we have put so much effort into creating our one-million-kilometre mechanical warranty and our best-in-class list of luxury and safety specifications in every Tiggo Pro,” said Botes.
Botes explained that Chery has extended its support of South African customers to also include previous Chery owners.
Chery South Africa launched a special Legacy Customer Campaign in April. It has since actively invited customers who purchased a vehicle from an importer before Chery entered the market to join the Chery family and have their vehicles safely and comprehensively serviced at their local Chery dealer.
“We look forward to welcoming more people to the Chery brand as our network of dealers grows further and as we introduce more models to the Chery range,” said Botes.

Is A Chery Tiggo 9 Joining The Tiggo Range?
After the appearance of the first spy photos of the flagship crossover Chery Tiggo 9, renders were created to more accurately examine the expected new Chery Tiggo product.
The first information about Chery Tiggo 9 appeared last year, the car passes under the model number T26. It will get premium retractable door handles and a new design.
According to Chery’s internal documentation, the T26 will be built on the T2X platform, and its dimensions will only slightly exceed the Tiggo 8 Pro - the largest Chery Tiggo currently in South Africa. The exact dimensions will be 4780 x 1920 x 1700 mm with a wheelbase of 2800 mm. Chery Tiggo 9 will be available in 5-, 6- and 7-seater versions. It will be equipped with 1.6- or 2-litre turbo engines, as well as a 7-speed “robot”. The drive can be front or full.
Related: View the current Tiggo range.
Chery is also preparing a crossover codenamed T26J, which will be a sports modification of the Tiggo 9 with a 5-seater saloon, a 2-litre engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The front of the Chery Tiggo 9 will receive a frameless grille reminiscent of Omoda 5. The headlights are distinguished by LED running lights and a block of high and low beams located under them. Chery Tiggo 9 turn signals are represented by horizontal stripes that are located under the headlights. Fog lights and an adaptive cruise control radar can be seen at the bottom of the front bumper.
At the rear, Chery Tiggo 9 has a single block of lights. Stoplights and turn signals are located in the horizontal elements below them.
The renders were created by the same insider who first published images of Chery Arrizo 8, which ended up being very close to reality.

Comparing The 2022 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro And The Haval H6
Ask any seasoned motoring scribe about their first Chinese car experience and the story is likely to be an amusing one. Early examples hailing from the country were usually met with derision — with styling that was clearly ripped-off; substandard interior quality, poor refinement and the general sense that you were getting a product that would not last a fortnight.
Oh, how we sniggered at early entrants like the Chery QQ3 and Great Wall Motors (GWM) Steed. Yes, they were cheap (but for good reason). And their safety credentials left much to be desired. There were other shockers, from various brands (many short-lived); like Hafei, GoNow, Meiya, Foton and DFSK, among other handles.
But nobody seems to be laughing at the Chinese in 2022. Manufacturers like Haval, positioned as the upmarket end of GWM, have set local sales charts ablaze. And the latest wares from Chery, now reinvented with a new brand identity, are not to be scoffed at. This week we are zoning in on two contenders with sights set on the C-segment sport-utility vehicle (SUV) market. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and H6 are bringing the fight to nemeses from Germany, Japan, France and South Korea — and in impressive fashion.
Our testers range in price from R504,900 (H6 4WD Luxury) to R546,900 (Tiggo 8 Pro Executive). The latter vehicle represents the highest tier in its range, while the H6 has a flagship in the form of the Super Luxury grade, costing R539,900.
Looking the part
Resplendent in a shade of eggplant emoji purple, the Tiggo 8 Pro in Executive grade makes quite a statement. Its toothy grille — adorned by myriad metal pins — trumpets the arrival of the SUV. This octagonal centrepiece, with the Chery emblem right in the middle, is what you would call ornate.
And you will find shimmery embellishments bordering the air-intake ducts and lower front bumper valence. Some have described the stylistic flavours of this Chery as American. You can see what they mean, in cues like the Jeep-esque rear lights. It was the subject of lusty stares during our test period. Partly because of its considerable newness, partly because of its inherent presence.
While the Haval H6 has been around for nearly a year, it too garnered its share of admiring glances. You could put some of this down to the interesting, chocolatey shade, unusual amid a sea of blander shades.
The Haval in Luxury trim seems to have taken a more Teutonic line to its aesthetic makeup. At night, with its rear light bar that spans the width of the tailgate, you might even mistake it for a Porsche Cayenne in the distance. Like the Chery’s, its countenance has a formidable gaze, with a hexagonal grille, slim headlamps and sharp-pleated bumper. Derivative in certain areas, perhaps, but neither vehicle could be described as unattractive, by any means.
Premium experiences
You will struggle to find any blatant evidence of cost-cutting in the cabin of the H6. Its design theme is one of modern minimalism, with certain aspects reminding one of a contemporary Volvo execution. The luggage space with the seats up is 447l and 1,485l folded.
Aside from a single, thin panel of switchgear, the central fascia is devoid of buttons. Gear selection is performed via a rotary controller. Complementing the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment screen is a digitised instrument cluster. Both rate well for clarity of display. While the materials employed are of a good standard, the ambience is a dour one; with dark materials and drab silver accents.
Conversely, the Tiggo invites you in with a blend of warm, toffee hues, sumptuous upholstery with quilted stitching, superior seat padding and front head restraints with folding outer sections, like those in a Range Rover. It feels genuinely cosseting and far more upmarket than the price tag would have you believe.
No doubt about it, this Chery is a true class act in the area of interior design and perceived quality. There is another ace up its sleeve, being a seven-seater, compared to the five-seater Haval. With the third row up, luggage space is a paltry 193l. Fold the third row and you get 892l. Put both rows down and you can cart a massive 1,930l.
Pleasant road manners
You could be forgiven for approaching the driver’s seat of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro with bated breath; lest the outward style and refinement give way to the limited substance under the skin.
Ride quality is fair, if slightly on the firm side, with a 235/55/18 wheel-and-tyre combination offering a substantial footprint. Driving the car over shoddy backwater road surfaces at launch early this year, my impressions were a little less favourable — but the highway-munching capabilities and town-cruising manners on this occasion seemed far more pleasant.
One area of criticism that remained, however, was the brake pedal feel, akin to stamping down on a piece of damp wood. Travel is short and all the anchor strength is located at the very bottom, making it tricky to modulate smoothly. This is something owners will grow accustomed to in time. Another quirk was the tunnel vision rear-view mirror, which is unlike any we have ever experienced in a modern automobile. It can cause a headache. Ground clearance is a reasonable 196mm.
The steering in the H6 is much lighter than in the Chery and the brake pedal feedback is more progressive. It also rolls on 18-inch alloys, shod with rubber that boasted a larger sidewall profile (60mm); but narrower width (225mm). Its road manners are well resolved, but the Chery just seems to offer an extra layer of polish when it comes to the damping of imperfections and suppression of exterior noise. Best drive them back-to-back while shopping to gauge your own bum-in-seat impression. Ground clearance of the H6 is notably lower, at 170mm.
Power play
But the H6 punches back in the engine category, wielding a larger 2.0-displacement with an output of 150kW and 320Nm. It delivers its grunt in a more relaxed fashion, with power transmitted to all four wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, that operates in a quick-witted way.
The Chery also uses a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, but makes do with front-wheel drive. Like the unit in the H6, its four-cylinder engine is turbocharged, although the capacity is notably less, displacing 1.6 litres.
Its motor is good for 145kW and 290Nm, erring on the strained, coarse side when kick-down overtaking moves are required. Now consider the prospect of trying it with the other six seats in the house occupied. By the end of the test week, the H6 showed an average consumption of 9.5l/100km and the Tiggo 8 Pro displayed 10l/100km.
Toy story
Holding the lock button down on the key fob of the Executive-grade Chery revealed a neat party trick: remote starting. It is one item in a veritable goody-bag of standard features; including a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, full-LED exterior lighting, dual-zone climate control (with an independent system for the third row), electrically-adjustable front seats, voice control, a top-notch Sony audio system and wireless charging.
The Super Luxury version of the H6 would be a closer match to the Tiggo 8 Pro Executive in terms of the complete specification. Although the H6 Luxury, while one tier down on the hierarchy, is hardly lacking in amenities. It also has LED exterior lights, a 360-degree camera, electric seat adjustment (driver only), a panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control.
Both models have pre-collision warning systems with autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection and traffic sign recognition. The H6 goes a tad further with the inclusion of lane-keeping assistance, relying on mild steering interventions. As for safety, the duo is equipped with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, tyre pressure monitors and ISOFIX child seat mountings. The H6 earned five stars when it was crash tested by ANCAP. The Chery earned a five-star C-NCAP rating.
Service plans and warranties
The Tiggo 8 Pro has a 10-year/1,000,000km warranty — with terms and conditions of course. It applies only to the first owner of the vehicle and is not transferable. A five-year/150,000km warranty is issued alongside this, in addition to a five-year/60,000km service plan. The H6 gets a five-year/100,000km warranty and a five-year/60,000km service plan.
Final thoughts
Aside from serving as positive examples of what the Chinese motor industry is capable of, these models are hugely competitive when viewed alongside segment rivals. Yes, they have their quirks. But so does everything else in the field.
The value aspect cannot be disputed. For prices equivalent to the entry- or middle-grade offerings from competitor stables, the Chinese alternatives offer specification levels of a high-end, premium product.
Take the Volkswagen Tiguan, for example, a category pioneer with a well-established reputation. It starts with a base price of R547,900 — and R671,700 for the seven-seater Allspace. Add options to the level of the standard equipment in one of our Chinese cars and those prices will inflate dramatically.
Judging by their sales volumes and sightings on the road, Haval appears to have earned market acceptance. Chery will need a bit more time to attain a similar level of equity, but it would be safe to say that with its current crop of products, the firm is headed in the right direction.
So, we can recommend the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Haval H6 quite easily to anyone asking. But which would we declare the overall winner in this duel? That honour goes to the Chery — its standard seven seats, sumptuous cabin and cosseting feel helped it edge a little further. This was a close one.

Why The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Will Destabilize The Honda CR-V And Facelifted X70
With the Tiggo 7 Pro's recent debut in South Africa, there are two obvious competitors who should be concerned. The Honda CR-V is the first. The current CR-V is a competent performer with a strong sales record, but it has already seen too many years in the showroom. The Honda CR-V, which was launched in July 2017 and will be face-lifted in November 2020, is starting to look a touch weary and need an all-new model.
Then there's the Proton X70, a rebadged Geely Auto SUV that's doing well. It has quickly disrupted both the sedan and SUV markets since its premiere in December 2018. You can try Proton X70 used cars if you think an all-new one is expensive. Its sales momentum is waning due to late deliveries and after-sales troubles. This is why, in a few months, Proton and Geely will deliver the facelifted X70 with a familiar 1.5L turbocharged engine.
As a result, the facelifted X70 will face off against the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro SUV. The Tiggo 7 Pro is equipped with an all-digital driver's cockpit, voice command, three digital displays, and all of the comfort and safety features found in the X70 and CR-V. It has 5 seats and 475 litres of cargo space.
A 1.5L turbocharged engine with 147 horsepower and 210 Nm of torque is coupled to a CVT under the hood. The 1.5L turbocharged engine in the Honda CR-V produces 193 horsepower and 243 Nm of torque when paired with a reliable CVT.
Meanwhile, the Proton X70 facelift will employ the same engine as the Proton X50. With a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, this 1.5L 3-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 180 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque.
So, while the X70 facelift is more powerful, the 3-cylinder engine may be a concern for some consumers, and the dual-clutch gearbox, which has been plagued by reliability issues from the early days of VW dual-clutch gearbox failures, may also be a deterrent.
With Proton's ongoing after-sales and parts troubles, as well as the aforementioned powertrain concerns for the facelift Proton X70, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro has an excellent chance because they supply outstanding after-sales and warranty to South African customers.
