My little Arthur backstory is that his parents never let him have a pet so he keeps trying to adopt wild animals. He builds traps and he brings home mice and small critters from the woods. His parents hated it. They would always make him get rid of them. One day he finds an injured owl and he decides to hide it and nurse it back to health. He feeds it meat he steals from dinner and mice when he can get them. When it's finally healed he lets it go but it still visits his window at night sometimes. He names it Mr. Scratch.

Imagine: John gets his own body, but because he has physical vocal cords, his voice sounds different. And it takes Arthur a while to be fully convinced this is John because the voice is different from the one he's heard in his head:

At first, it's that he genuinely doesn't believe this is John. Not helped by how many eldritch beings they've run into who would love to trick them. But slowly, John is able to convince him with knowledge of shared memories and experiences.

You'd think that's it, but no. Because just because Arthur mentally knows this is John, subconsciously, there's a delay. Like, John might be talking to him in a store, and it takes Arthur a few minutes to realize John is talking to him because his mind views the voice as that of a stranger, so it filters it out aa background noise.

Over time, Arthur adjusts and associates the voice with John...but there are still some moments where it takes a bit to click. Like when they're lying in bed, and Arthur is just waking up, and John whispers something to him...and Arthur jerks away because in his half-asleep state his mind doesn't process that this is his husband.
