born too soon to spend my teen years logging onto ao3 on my smartphone in the privacy of my own bedroom, born too late for mimeographed zines, born just in time to sneak into a common area of my family home at 2 am and wrap the modem in a thick blanket to muffle the screeching, so my parents wouldn’t catch me spending 18 cents a minute on long-distance rural dial-up to type my sexually confused hopes into webcrawler and lycos, praying maybe one other person on earth also liked the same character i did enough to make a web page about it. and that my connection to the information superhighway would hold out long enough to download 78 kilobytes worth of .txt files onto a floppy disk labeled “SCHOOL BACKUP” that i would guard with my life.

it is genuinely bewildering to me that adult human beings do not know this but if you are mean to people they will not like you. like tbh they are probably also not going to like you if you are mean to other people but they are definitely not going to like you if you are mean to them. it doesn’t matter if you are funny or if you can use r/aita rules to prove that you are in the right. people simply so not enjoy being treated like shit.

“Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else. The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to. Private schools and private limos and private doctors and private security are all pressure release valves that eliminate the friction that would cause powerful people to call for all of these bad things to get better. The degree to which we allow the rich to insulate themselves from the unpleasant reality that others are forced to experience is directly related to how long that reality is allowed to stay unpleasant. When they are left with no other option, rich people will force improvement in public systems. Their public spirit will be infinitely less urgent when they are contemplating these things from afar than when they are sitting in a hot ER waiting room for six hours themselves.”

Additional comment from the submitter: ❝ 'chapter by chapter' and 'entire work' refer to the button at the top of a work on AO3, to either see only one chapter at the time (i.e. you have to manually click at the end of a chapter to read the next) or see the entire work all at once (i.e. to pass from one chapter to another you only have to scroll down), regardless of the amount of chapters / words ❞

I asked one of my (male) friends to stop using the phrase “man up” and he has been using “fortify” for the past two weeks instead and it’s just a little thing but honestly it makes a difference
and tbh it’s also pretty funny when I start to deflate in the library and he leans over and goes “FORTIFY”
