The Lost Supper, official cast picture for the last season.
(Analysis under the cut)
It recreates The Last Supper, the famous 15th century painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Although in the cast picture there are 14 people instead of 13 like in the painting. The Last Supper portrays the reactions of the twelve apostles to the statement of Jesus: “One of you will betray me.”
There are 3 different shots of this season 6 promo picture but I prefer this one because is more similar to the composition in da Vinci’s painting.
Comparing the position of the cast with the apostles:
Ilana represents Bartholomew. Bartholomew the Apostle appears as a character in Francis Bacon’s novel New Atlantis. This tale is about a mythical secret island in the Pacific Ocean named Bensalem where people dedicate their lifes to science and philosophy. I bet is the same island of Lost In the novel, the inhabitants of this island find an ark with the Old and New testaments and a letter from Bartholomew the Apostle. In this letter Bartholomew says that an angel asked him to prepare the ark and how to do it so it would reach the island. In the show Ilana is send by Jacob with instructions to reach the island. Therefore both are emissaries from God-like entities to help the inhabitants of a mythical island.
Richard takes the place of Jacob (also called James the Less in some English versions of the Bible). Probably a symbolism for Richard’s connection with The Island’s Jacob. An interesting fact is that apostle-Jacob is in some versions of the Bible Jesus’ brother (being Mary and Joseph’s son). As we know island-Jacob is the brother of The Smoke Monster. If we interpret that John Locke in this picture is actually Smokey that means the same as in da Vinci’s painting we have Jacob’s brother sitting in the centre. This also highlights the juxtaposition between Jesus (good) and The Smoke Monster (evil).
Claire is in the position of Andrew. Andrew an Peter the Apostles were brothers. In my interpretation Sawyer is representing Peter. In the 4th season Sawyer acts very protective towards Claire till the point Miles asks him if he is her elder brother.
Sayid represents Judas Iscariot. This foreshadows the moment in which Sayid joins the side of The Smoke Monster, betraying his friends like Judas betrayed Jesus. In the show Sayid regrets his actions and decides to sacrify his life for the group. In the Bible Judas can’t live with the guilt and commits suicide. Thus both men take their own lifes after regretting their betrayal.
Kate takes the place of John or Mary Magdalene basing in which interpretation of da Vinci’s painting we follow, I chose Mary Magdalene for this analysis because is more appropriate for the comparison with Kate. In the Bible Mary is described as a woman who was cleansed from seven demonic spirits, she was once a sinful woman but becomes one of Jesus more prominent followers. In the show Kate used to be a wanted criminal but in The Island she is one of the characters who has been most involved in protecting and saving others. In fact, she is the one who shoots and kills The Smoke Monster wrapping up her conversion from criminal to hero.
Sawyer would be Peter. Peter was the brother of Andrew as I explained above. When Jesus was arrested Peter denied knowing him three times, this is known as “The Denial of Peter” followed by “The Repentance of Peter” when Jesus stared at him and Peter started crying. This events were also predicted by Jesus during the last supper right after foretelling the betrayal of Judas.
Locke takes the place of Jesus. John Locke has to die to achieve his mission of getting the Oceanic 6 back to The Island and once they are there he resurrects (then we learn that he hasn’t really resurrected but there’s still a parallelism with Jesus in my opinion). Portraying Locke as Jesus in the picture can also be a juxtaposition because Locke in season 6 is actually The Smoke Monster which is the representation of Evil in the show.
Jack takes the place of ‘doubting’ Thomas. In the 6th episode of season 5, “316″, Ben and Jack stare at the painting “The Incredulity of Saint Thomas” by Caravaggio and Ben points out the similarity between Jack and Thomas because like the apostle Jack needs to see it to believe it.
Jin takes the place Jacob the Elder (also called James the Great in some English versions of the Bible). I wasn’t able to find any similarities between Jin and Jacob the Elder aside that both men's’ fathers were fishermen. Jacob the Elder was the first apostle to be martyred.
Sun is in the position of Philip. I haven’t found any similarities between the two.
Miles represents Matthew. Matthew’s job was to collect the money of the taxes and going after money was Miles’ most prominent characteristic and the reason he ended up in The Island.
Ben takes the place of Judas Thaddaeus. I was honestly surprised to see that Ben is representing Judas Thaddaeus (aka “the good Judas”). When I first saw the picture and looked who was in the position of Judas Iscariot (aka the one who betrayed Jesus) I was expecting to find Ben because considering he killed Locke (who appears as Jesus here) he was the obvious choice. The fact that they put him as the good Judas makes me think they were trying to hint his redemption arc of the last season and that he is not that bad after all.
Hurley represents Simon The Zealot. In Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Matthew and Judas are staring at Simon looking for answers. In our picture the three losties from the far right are staring at Hurley, which makes sense because he ends up being the new Jacob so is logical that the other characters would turn to him for answers.
Simon and Judas Thaddaeus are often depicted together in paintings because they formed a team evangelizing the North of Africa (mostly Egypt) and then suffered martyrdom together. As we know Hurley and Ben formed a team as protectors of The Island in the finale and we know that they lived many years together doing that.
By elimination Lapidus should be John because in my interpretation Kate represents Mary Magdalene and not John. That’s the only way it makes sense to have 14 people in the table instead of 13 (as I said before many experts think da Vinci depicted Magdalene in the painting). I haven’t found any significance similarity between Lapidus and John the Apostle.
Regarding the props:
We see typical LOST elements like the table being a plane wing or the Dharma food on it. It is noticeable too the Swan Dharma station’s logo on the wall in the background. But the most interesting are the skulls in the ground.
There are 3 skulls in the picture. One is behind Ilana, foreshadowing she will be the first (permanent) dead among them. The 2nd one is below Sayid, once again a symbol of his early death. Remember that Sayid technically dies in the first episode of season 6. The last skull is between Miles and Hurley the two characters who can communicate with dead people.
Note: I’m pretty sure they didn’t intend to make a connection with every single apostle but people requested a more in depth analysis than the one a I did the first time so I did my best to find something for each character (and I didn’t find anything at all for Sun and Lapidus).
