BA3b Evaluation
From the beginning of BA3b I had a few ideas of what I wanted to achieve, the main one being about finding a career within the automotive industry and learn more about it to progress into after university. This was the most important factor about this last term for me, as I like to have clear plans of what is happening and have some security after graduating that I will have a job in the field of photography that I enjoy. Being able to assist Richard Seymour has taught me about the automotive industry and made me realise that this specialism area of photography is predominantly men who have been in the industry years, which could be a negative and a positive for myself going into the industry as a young woman. When finishing university I have an assisting job with Richard Seymour on his automotive jobs, but I’m also going to try and assist other local automotive photographers to be able to gain more experience. I want to carry on with my own work as well by constantly building a contact list up where I can photograph people’s cars or use certain locations that I can gain access too. I need to make sure that I have 1 image a month that is good enough to go into my portfolio, therefore I’m constantly building my portfolio as well.
I also have the job with Katie for Richings Greetham who are still keen to work with us both, but understand that these last few weeks are important to us and we’ve agreed to wait until after submission to start working together. Having a paid job waiting for us after we finish is good for us, as it means we’ll be straight back into working and will be able to start building a client list already.
Year 3 as a whole has allowed me to be creative with my practice, and to develop a visual approach to my work. I’ve also got 2 jobs through the university which I may not have necessarily got without the support and advice from James and the other tutors. I’ve definitely become more confident about my work this year, which could be result of me photographing a subject that I’m really interested in and being able to do what I want to without having to follow a brief set by someone else.

Looking at how automotive adverts are made with new technologies available, most of them are shot in camera are shot with rigs and drones now. I know someone with a drone that has said before they would fly it for me if I wanted to video cars driving along, however the issue is with where it can be flown. I’d love to be able to film the Porsche 911 racing along an empty road at night with the car lights being the main light source. However if drone photography is going to become an important part of automotive advertising, then I should learn how to fly them myself and look into getting my own license.
Although I don't have a rig myself, I could get a small tripod that sticks to the outside of the car, and put my small camera on it to film, or have it stuck down in the boot of the car with the boot open shooting a car behind. This is something that I really want to and need to do as moving image is such a big part of automotive advertising now.

16.5.17 - Tutorial with Matt

I booked a tutorial this morning with Matt just to have one last chat about my work that I’m handing in and for some reassurance with it all. I showed my portfolio PDF and was happy with the response that it got, there was only image that had a shadow in that was too dark, but apart from that criticism he said the rest was really strong, and I was ‘following the money/wealth’. I also should try and match the font type for my name on the pdf with a similar font type that my portfolio uses.
The things I need to focus on for the last few days before hand in are the learning outcomes, he said to try and summarise each post relating to the learning outcomes, so that it’s clear that I’ve ticked them off. I also need to look into more historical research! I did this with my dissertation last term and therefore have some points already that I can develop in more depth. Drones are a good point that I can expand on especially as they are becoming more and more vital in automotive photography.
We worked out that in order for me to get a 1st overall I need to get 74% in BA3b to comfortably get me a 1st. Since the beginning of year 2 I’ve always got 68% and I’m hoping this term I’ve managed to progress more relating to the industry and my career after university with this assisting job that I’ve got with Richard Seymour. After this tutorial I feel more confident handing my work in on Friday, but need to go through the learning outcomes to make sure that I haven't missed anything that could cost me marks.

Ferrari Owners Club - 27/28th May
Terry Hoyle owns a company called Hoyle Fox Classics which is based in Maldon, Essex which is 30 minutes from where I live back home. He is well known for the extensive collection of Ferrari’s that he owns and restores for other people, one client being Chris Evans. I’ve managed to arrange a meeting/introduction with him to allow me to photograph his cars. He’s also said he would take me to the Ferrari Owner’s Club next meeting on the 27th and 28th May. The cars will all be classics which is something I’ve only looked into once with Roy Jones’ cars, but this experience will be a great opportunity to meet people and gain contacts that have cars that I may be able to use in the future as well.

GGS printing & mounting
I went to GGS to see some examples of the Dibond mounting and the paper samples that they print on as well. They don’t mount on aluminium therefore I was thinking of mounting on dibond for the Norwich exhibition as I will be printing A2 and GGS is a lot cheaper than Spectrum. Once we get told for definite what sizes we will be printing for the exhibitions I will order the images for Norwich as they said it will take them up to 5 days to finish.

Portfolio PDF
I created a PDF file of my portfolio incase I need to send it out electronically to anyone. I didn’t like the bright white background, but couldn't use black because a lot of my images are very dark and the black would look like the images have been cut off. I decided to use a grey because it’s in the middle and the colour palettes in my images work well against grey.

Portfolio images in order

I’ve ordered my images for my portfolio by colour themes, and I’ve also integrated the still life images in with the automotive so that all the images work together. I wasn’t sure whether to have the automotive and still life images separate but I wanted the images to all work together and showcase that although different practices I have a consistence feel to my images. I tried to put my strongest images at the beginning, middle and end which I think was easier to do by mixing the still life images in the mix.

No physical invitations for our exhibitions
Speaking to the group who were in charge of the invitations, they said that there weren’t going to be any physical invites! I want to give family, friends and some professionals physical invites so that they can keep them, and because no one else seems to be doing anything about ordering them, I’m going to order some for myself using the template they sent us on Facebook. The timings on this template are wrong, and Olivia said she would send the correct template once the times have been confirmed by this Thursday. Once we get the new template I’m going to order them straight away so that I can send them out ASAP!

9.5.17 - Tutorial with James
I wanted a tutorial today just to double check that I have everything I need for hand in, and to see if there are any adjustments that I need to make. We went through the final images that I want to submit for BA3b, there are a few that I could get rid of as they don’t sit alongside the other images as well as others do. My logbook was also looked at, and James said that there were some still life images that I hadn’t used in my portfolio but should as they’re stronger than some of the ones I have used. This was also said about some of my automotive images too, which I’m going to edit and take in and show whoever is in the offices to see what they think on them.

Image fixed & re-ordered
I took this image into the digital darkroom, because where I’d pushed the image so far on Lightroom, I’d messed the levels up and there were white specs coming out from the trees. James managed to fix it for me by filing in the white spaces with black, which makes the image look much better. I’ve reordered this print for my portfolio because it looks much better now, and I can also see what it looks like on C-Type gloss paper for when I print it for the exhibition.

Comparing BA3a - BA3b
Looking back at my BA3a work and comparing it to the work I’ve done this time, I can definitely see the similarities in colour tones that I use, the only main difference is that this term I’ve focussed on still life instead of just automotive work. Although there is much difference in my work this could be a good think as it may mean that I’ve found a certain style/feel to my images and that could be identified as my images to other people looking at them.

Final Images - BA3b
These are the final 20 images that I’ve chosen to hand in for BA3b finals. I didn’t realise how many shoots I’d done until looking through all the images from BAb3, I’ve done an equal amount of shoots for automotive and still life, and 1 shoot combining both still life in an automotive environment - 6 automotive shoots & 6 still life shoots in the studio. Looking at these images, I’m happy with the progress that I’ve made this term from last term, and hope it’s enough to push my grade that extra 2% higher.

Long Term Plans
1 Year
For the first year after finishing uni, I want to be assisting and continuing with my own work, to try and get some of my own work as a photographer as well. As it stands I have an assisting job with Richard Seymour, which should teach me about the industry in more depth, and new skills. I want to assist for 1-2 years so that I can learn more, and then move on to assist other photographers as well. I also have 3 weddings lined up to photograph in the coming year, which will allow me to earn some money from photographer already.
5 Years
In 5 years time I’d want to have my own established company, with some regular commissions. I’d ideally like to be able to make my living from photography alone, whether that involves some wedding photography as well. Although most people are saying London is the place to be especially for advertising, I think I’ll still stay outside of London in Essex therefore only an hour away from London.
