That night YaYa and her girls Kayla, Vanessa and her bestie LaTasha met up at club Blitz forr a girls night out. Everything was going great. The club was turnt, drinks were half off, all eyes were on them but hell they didnt care. It wasn’t until Vanessa spotted a familiar face in the crowd that things began to turn for the worse.

Vanessa: YaYa, tell me that ain’t Meek ol triflin’ ass over there with his garbage pale girlfriend.

YaYa: Meek? Where?

YaYa scanned the crowd of club goers and low and behold there Shameik was getting his grind on with his girlfriend of 5 years on the other side of the club. YaYa was not impressed and after a few drinks in her, she was feeling super messy. They walked their way across the club to approach Shameik and his girlfriend to make the night truly interesting. 

Shameik: Shit…. Not right now bruh.

Ziya: Oh here come this bitch.

YaYa: Hey Meek, I didn’t know you’d be here tonight. What you doing here?

Shameik: YaYa stop playin, you know I’m here with my girl and we not here for no beef so chill.

Ziya: Oh no I’m always here for the beef. The fuck you want bitch?

Vanessa: Calm down trick. Nobody was even talking to you.

YaYa: Bitch? Girl go sit yo bum ass down nobody came over here for your ugly ass.

Ziya: Yeah well you came over for my man which means you came for me. Scoot your hoe ass on. Nobody want you boo, get it through your head.

YaYa: Oh really? I think Meek would disagree. Wouldn’t you?

The attention immediately turned to Shameik who was trying his best to play off his guilty actions from earlier that day. He looked at his girlfriend, Ziya, to quickly deescalate the situation. 

Shameik: Babe, I don’t even know why you let her get to you like that. C’mon, lets dip.

Shameik turned and pulled his girlfriend away who flipped Vanessa and Yarisse off as they walked away. YaYa and Vanessa laughed at the couple. He knew if they stayed in that situation any longer, YaYa would spill the tea about their secret meet ups. Just as soon as they were gone, Yarisse felt someone staring at her from across the room. It was a fine chocolate man, dressed to perfection looking like a four course meal. They locked eyes and she definitely liked what she saw.

The Reveal

She sat patiently in the dark waiting. Not really thinking, unsure of herself. She didn’t know if she wanted to kick his ass or cry. She wanted both. She wanted to burn their house to the ground and dance on the ashes of her once happy life. She wanted to tear the pictures off the walls and break everything he ever touched. She drank until her eyes watered and her throat burned. She prayed until her knees were raw. She cried until there was no water left in her body. So she sat. She sat and waited.

At 4:31 am the door opened, and like clockwork, Bryson stumbled in making every effort he can to be quiet. The light turns on and he nearly trips over a pair of shoes on the ground.

“Lani? What are you doing up?”

“What perfume does she wear?”

Puzzled he looked at her face and knew that she knew.

“Baby what are you ta…”

“I went into Lush today, just to look around, and a sales lady came up to me pushing a perfume trying to make a sale. She told me that I would love this one perfume and she held the test strip up to my nose and I wept. Japanese Cherryblossom. That’s the smell that reeks through your clothes when you stumble in at night and lay side me. It’s in everything in the house. It’s in your clothes, it’s in mine. It’s in the furniture. I smell it when I walk down the street. I smell it when I turn around every corner, it’s everywhere.”

“Honey I swear I have no idea what you’re talking about”

“Do you think I’m stupid Bryson?” her voiced strains as she tries to control her rage, her Barbadian accent growing stronger with frustration.

“Your boss said that you are working extra hours but even then you’d be off by 10:00. Before you can make up some ‘rational’ excuses about hanging with the boys, John, Stef, Ray, and Scott haven’t seen you in weeks.”

He raised his voice as a diversion, hoping to guilt her out of her wild, yet true, accusations.

“So you’re out here calling my boss and my friends?!? You’re CRAZY!!”

Quietly she got up and threw a pair of lace underwear, that didn’t belong to her, on the table and walked upstairs.

Mine

I Changed myself. Purged my body of impurities, bathed 5 times a day. I fasted for 10 days and while reading from the holy book I looked for your face. I carved my pain into my body only to feel…something, anything. I was numb. I ached to cry, to yell to scream, to be angry. I just sat and felt numb. I counted my braids so many times I almost named them. I cleaned the house, washed my hair, did my makeup, got dressed all to just get to the door and fall apart again. Just when I thought I was ready to live, to feel, you came creeping back into me the same way you would creep into our bed.

When someone cheats on you, you lose yourself. Turns out I lost myself long before you wandered into her bed. As I lied on the floor staring blankly into space I realized something. You took from me. You took from me life, my joy, my peace.  Everything that was me was tainted by you. You took my walk, you took my voice, you took my friends, you took my job, you took my hair. Everything that’s supposed to be mine only reminds me of you. I would stare in the mirror for hours trying to find something, any feature that was mine until I realized one day I owned my nose. Another day you returned my eyes. My lips, my hips, my hair, my smile all soon to come back under my possession. You don’t own me anymore.
