The Elementalists is one of those books where you see the cover and learn the basic premise and you pretty much already know everything that’s going to happen.

I will say this for it: Wake the Dead did have interesting lore docs. It’s always fascinating in zombie media to see what people were up to just before and during the fall of society.

In the Walking Dead (TV continuity) the outbreak started really picking up on a Friday afternoon when people were just getting off work and getting ready for their weekend, and the visual storytelling they do with that is so cool to see. It’s like a little time capsule almost; the last of society as they knew it just before the dead took over.

I like that Wake the Dead had lore docs from just before the outbreak and just after it started picking up. Made it feel more immersive.

I still think about how in Wake the Dead, the main character and love interests were 21 years into the zombie apocalypse (thus had lived through two prior solstices) and had somehow never seen any of the other variants.

Troy and the MC I can kinda understand. They were sequestered in the Tower for their whole lives and the MC is only allowed on their first scouting mission in the first chapter.

Shannon, though, lived in a compound with a bunch of scientists. What the fuck were they doing in the facility the whole time if she hadn’t seen any of the mutated variants? Playing patty cakes???

Angel lived in a shopping mall since the beginning of the apocalypse. For 21 years. Somehow. Where the hell was she getting food, and how did she not encounter any variants while obtaining it?

And then there’s Eli, who lived in an unfortified cabin in the middle of the woods for the entirety of the 21 years. How did he not find any mutant zombies, especially with so little protection? How is he even still alive through two solstices and no major fortifications?

Zero sense. Zero damn sense all around.
