I know some people have misgivings about the Murderbot TV series

One thing that does annoy me is this fear that there will suddenly be “Murderbot fans who only watched the TV series” and this idea that they’ll somehow be “lesser”, not “real fans”

Like the attitude I sometimes see towards fans (of the books) who, for example, accidentally use the wrong pronouns for Murderbot

Like: somehow if they haven’t picked up on everything that’s going on in the books then they’re somehow not worthy?

Let’s just remember that canonically Murderbot is a huge fan of Sanctuary Moon and it FAST FORWARDS through bits it doesn’t like

I’d watched three episodes of Sanctuary Moon and was fast forwarding through a sex scene…

Despite this attitude to the canon of its favourite series, this is the series about which it says:

“It’s the first one I saw. When I hacked my governor module and picked up the entertainment feed. It made me feel like a person.”

If someone loves The Murderbot Diaries as a book, as an audio book, as a “movie in their mind” or (hopefully soon) as a TV show—can we just accept that it means as much to them (and possibly it means much much more) as it does to anyone

Even if, gods forbid, they (figuratively) fast forward through the sex scenes

🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.

Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.

Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.

Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.

Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.

Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.

Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.

Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%

Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.

If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.

there is no electric hum buzzing through the air. there is no stinging bite to the sweetness of the mango. there is no bitter metallic tang to the water.

there is no cruelty in their laughter, no ambiguity in the instructions, no reason to be upset. there is no bitter aftertaste to your sweet tea, nothing scratchy about your blanket.

the lamps glow steadily. they do not falter.

II.

this is the second lesson you learn: you are never right.

you are childish, gullible, overly prone to tears. you are pedantic, combative, deliberately obtuse. you are lazy, unreliable, never on time.

you’re always making up excuses, rudely interrupting, stepping on people’s shoes. you’re always trying to get attention, never thinking about anyone else, selfish through and through.

it’s you that’s the problem. the lamps are fine.

III.

this is the third lesson you learn: you must always give in.

mother knows best. father knows best. doctor knows best. teacher knows best. this is the proper path. do not go astray.

listen to your elders, respect your betters, accept what’s given to you as your due. bow to the wisdom of experience, the education of the professional, the clarity of an external point of view.
