2017 Year in Review - May 26
Very good audience tape from Ryan’s Australian tour. Unfortunately we haven’t gotten any tapes of the marathon, close to three hour shows he played on that tour, but this one clocks in at a solid two hours. I’ve also been very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the audience recordings this year - haven’t gotten any  tapes that were close unlistenable, like we did on some of the tours the last few years.
The setlist for this one looks a lot like the other recent shows. Unfortunately, the experiment of playing different Prisoner B-sides nightly ended swiftly, and none are present in this show. It is nice to see the band bust out Mockingbird, which, before being busted out at Red Rocks last year, hadn’t been played in 7 years. Glad we have a good recording of it. I also really liked this acoustic -> electric take on Prisoner.

November 22
A really cool show from the 2007 European tour, with the Cardinals opening with an electric set (what we at the time called a “red cave” set, because of the lighting used), followed by an acoustic set (the “blue cave” - cool Let it Ride here). After that, Ryan comes on and talks briefly about his struggles with his hearing (later diagnosed as Meniere’s Disease), and plays a really lovely acoustic set to close things out (particularly like the take on I See Monsters).

October 1
Long show today, from the 2007 Cardinals - 2:45 of tunes and a lot of banter. As we discussed last week, the 2007 Cardinals shows got longer and longer as this fall tour went on - we’re a few weeks away from some real epics. Particularly like this version of Dear John.

March 12
Another show from the Cardinals farewell tour. The extent to which the setlist is similar to the March 9th show is a good indicator of how the band seemed to get a bit complacent toward the end. They still hit some brilliant heights at times, but many of the farewell shows just didn’t match the glory days.

March 11th
Once again, no shows on the archive today. Musical content picks up tomorrow.
For now, read an old piece on DRA from the NY Times right after he got sober.
