Who realized their feelings first?

Piers, for sure. He probably knew how he felt early on. He's the type of guy who is attracted to people based on connection, so when he's scouted by Chris and the two of them connect as partners in the BSAA, the level of loyalty and fluidity between them attracts Piers almost instantly. He's head over heels long before Chris is.

Piers is as dedicated to his work as his captain, though, and no matter how strongly he feels, he knows their professional relationship comes first. A part of him probably also has that fear that if they were to enter in a romantic relationship, it would affect the way they work and likely damage the bond they already have. On top of that, there's no telling if Chris feels the same way, and Piers isn't exactly keen on pushing Chris away by spilling his guts. He is perfectly content having the privelege of working alongside and getting to protect his captain.

Chris, on the other hand, hasn't been focused on love or romance for well over a decade. Once he set his heart on doing away with Umbrella and then bioterrorism in general, he put everything else on the backburner. He had truly, honestly scouted Piers into the BSAA because he knew that one day, the guy would save the world.

So Chris isn't aware of budding feelings for or initial attraction to Piers until he's slapped in the face by a revelation that he is completely and utterly in love with him. And once he knows, it's an even bigger battle to keep it to himself, because like Piers, he doesn't want it to affect their work or their relationship.

Needless to say, when those feelings finally come out, it's probably explosive. A sudden burst of emotion and affection that leads to them both clinging desperately to one another.

In an AU where Chris does retire and Piers becomes Alpha team's captain, they get a nice apartment together, and Chris goes so stir-crazy that he rearranges it all the time.

Initially, it concerns Piers. Chris has been tracking down bioterrotists for over a decade, and now that he's at home all the time (alone, since Piers is almost always working), he's restless and probably lonely and the PTSD he no doubt suffers from haunts him regularly. He has Claire to keep tabs on him while Piers is on missions, but that isn't as reassuring to the new captain as he wishes it was.

But it becomes something of a common occurrence, and Piers adjusts to it over time. It's one of many coping mechanisms Chris uses to keep his head about him, and it's also...just kind of cute. Piers will leave the house knowing the couch was up against a wall opposite their television and come back to it in a corner with the television pivoted to accommodate it and a snazzy new rug in between the two on the floor. He'll stumble in exhausted from a long flight ready to flop himself face-first onto their bed, which was in the corner of their bedroom last he knew, and practically trip because it's in the middle now. Or he'll nearly piss himself out of shock when he steps into the foyer and sees that Chris has made an entire wall in said foyer dedicated to pictures, so there are suddenly a million faces looking at him from the right-side wall.

One visit home in particular surprises Piers when he arrives to a massive arrangement of pillows and blankets on the living room floor. Piers wants to chastise Chris, but then Chris tells him that all he wanted when Piers came home was to lie down with the love of his life and watch cheesy old zombie movies as if they're having a sleepover.

It melts Piers' heart, and he quickly accepts the offer and buries himself in the blankets with Chris like a burrito.
