Hajime who's been preparing for his overseas education for a while.
Hajime who started talking to other international students long before he ever steps on campus, who was greeted by an upperclassman from the Japanese-American Alliance Club at freshman check-in.
Who's never felt lost on campus because of all his preparations.
Hajime who's had a network of friends and support so he's never felt home sick, just a little incomplete at times.
Hajime who can't help but feel like he's missed some vital part of this experience.
Hajime who starts searching beyond his network. Who starts to step outside his comfort zone and make American friends.
Hajime who's paired up with you for a presentation at the end of his first semester. You who sits in the back of the class with a good friend and whom he's sure has no idea who he is until he goes to introduce himself at the end of the lecture and overhears you say
--"that hot Japanese guy"--
and feels a flutter of nerves for the first time.
A flutter that pounds his heart when he hears you correct your friend "no, dumbass it's not Ha-jimmy. It's Ha-ji-me."
Do you know he overheard you?
He can't tell.
But he likes spending time with you.
He finds himself drifting your way without consciously choosing it: hanging out after you work on the presentation, explaining his favorite anime when you visit his room to practice, inviting you to watch some when you're done.
He's not sure how you feel about him. He knows it's not just a cultural thing either, he's never known when someone liked him back home, so he just goes with the flow and as much as keeps inviting you to things you keep accepting. That has to be a good thing, right?
Until you reciprocate.
You start inviting him to campus events, to study for finals together, and get food in the cafeteria.
You introduce him to some other friends and every time your schedules line up the two of you eat together with a mix of other people you know.
Hajime feels like he's found that for which he was looking.
He still wonders if he's bothering you, especially when he asks what your plans are for the winter break. He's not going home until summer and when you find out he's going to be stuck on campus you don't hesitate to invite him home. He meets your parents, your family, your friends from home and introduces you to his family and friends on the other side of the world over video.
Going back to campus, starting classes again fills him with a strange longing. He wonders if he's finally feeling homesick until he puts it together that no number of phone calls or video chats with his own family and friends ease the weight in his heart.
It's you.
It's spending time with you that fills him with light.
He feels weightless when he's around you and spends all of his free time with you, worries always nagging the back of his mind that he's overstepping his bounds, that he's missed some subtle signal through language barriers or cultural differences but it's not until after midterms of spring semester that he gets the answer.
Dinner. The two of you and some of your friends. It's not the first time sitting together but Hajime's never really clicked with them, some weird divide he's never been able to cross or understand.
One of them makes a comment. It sends the rest of the group laughing but Hajime has no idea what was so funny about it; the implied meaning evades him entirely and it hurts because he hasn't just missed the joke
he missed a joke at his expense.
He knows this because you're not laughing. All traces of your usual expressions gone as your features fold into a scowl.
"Fuck off," you snap and stand up, picking up your things as you give the entire group the coldest look Hajime's ever seen. "Come on Haji."
He follows without hesitation, so focused on your single-minded charge out of the dining hall and concern over why you're upset that he's not even hurt the group only calls after you.
He falls into step with you outside.
Once you've left the building behind your steps slow and you turn to Hajime with a guilty, hurt expression. "I'm so sorry, Hajime. They are fucking assholes and completely wrong."
Hajime shrugs, easily admitting "honestly? I have no idea what they were trying to say."
You start to reply and he guesses you were about to explain it when understanding dawns on your face. "That's...good, then." A smile spreads across your face, the relaxed expression putting his heart at ease. "It doesn't matter. All that matters is how we feel."
"How we feel?" Hajime repeats, feeling like maybe he should know what they said.
"Yes. Unless..." Your assured smile falters. "...I...maybe it's just...me?" You search his expression and now he knows he's missing something important.
"Are you talking about dating?" he asks and you hesitate, trying to understand without putting him on the spot but suddenly the whole situation catches up with him.
The fatigue of moving to a new country,
starting a new life,
and battling obstacles he never could have predicted finally slams into him and he feels tired.
So tired of all of this
but not you.
The words fall out effortlessly in his fatigue. "Because I've been in love with you since our project last semester."
"What," you gape.
He tells you everything, what he overheard and how much it meant that you not only knew how to properly pronounce his name but felt it important enough to correct your friend.
You who had been his first friend outside of his safety net.
You who had become a central part of his college experience. A piece to the puzzle that he never could have prepared for and now can't imagine living without.
You who's made this finally feel complete.
Made him feel complete.
There are no cultural differences or language barriers, no missed messages or lost meanings in the way your lips press against each other. And once Hajime has you,
you who learns Japanese to talk to his family and friends.
You who goes to Japan with him the summer after graduation and meets everyone.
You who laughs through a slideshow Matsukawa and Hanamaki present to Iwaizumi as to why he needs to 'lock you down'.
You who walks by his side on a nostalgic stroll through Miyagi one night. Who listens patiently, adoringly, to his reminiscing and treasures seeing all the places that shaped his life before you.
You who always looked at him lovingly but now looks at him, seeing all of him past included, with more love than could have imagined.
You who expects him to propose in that moment, disappointed but not dismayed when he doesn't.
You who's secure in your love for him and his love for you. Who asks him about the future when you get back to America.
You, at whom he looks for a long time and takes your hand without answering. It's the night before classes for the graduate program begin and he hasn't finished unpacking yet; the belongings accumulated from his life in America still tucked away in boxes but he doesn't need to look through any of them.
He lets go of your hand to go to his backpack--the carry-on still partially unpacked from the summer--and pulls out a small box.
"I thought about doing this when we were in Japan," he admits, voice soft and quiet in the unarranged apartment dorm. "But it didn't feel right.
"Not because I didn't want to," he quickly adds then gently meets your eye, "but because it's not where my life is anymore--where our life is."
He smiles shyly but confident as he sinks to one knee and proposes.
Once Hajime has you,
you who says yes like you're finally complete, the way you've made him feel for a long time,
he never lets you go.

for such an intelligent soccer player, isagi yoichi is unbelievably dense. he can read the field perfectly, but when you try to flirt? any advances you make go straight over his head.
"you look hot," you say nonchalantly, an attempt at flirting that even you consider desperate.
"it's been warm, hasn't it? weird for this time of year... and not great for playing soccer in."
that's not. that's not what i meant.
so, of course, you try again. "yeah, definitely. do you maybe want to go get some ice cream after practice? there's a cute new place in town i think you'd like."
"sounds fun!" for a moment you think he might understand what you mean, "should we bring the rest of the team?"
he didn't.
it's not until a big game that you manage to get through to him. or rather, he manages to get through to you.
he's scored the winning goal. everyone is cheering. he makes a beeline for you. isagi throws his arms around you and kisses you, sweaty and excited and hungry, the kiss you had imagined so many times but never thought would be real.
"i'm sorry, i shouldn't've done that, that was really tactless of me, please forgive me, i was just super in the moment and you were just there and you looked so kissable and i was so excited and-"
you don't bother replying - your mind's running too quickly for that. so you kiss him again, this time gentler, sweeter, calmer.
his face is beet red when you finally pull back. "you feel the same way about me?!?!"
"of course!" you say in disbelief, "i've been dropping hints for months!"
"... YOU HAVE????"

i love him.
