A Place For The Unpalatable
5 posts
Rants, vents, and musings about the parts of chronic illness that are frowned upon by most polite societies. (IBS, POTS, ARFID, EDS, ASD, ADHD, overactive bladder, urgency incontinence, RA, pelvic floor health, dysautonomia, body dysmorphia, and probably others)Please keep your kinks to yourself. If you make it weird or make me feel uncomfortable, I will be blocking, no questions asked or answered. Sweat icons created by Freepik - Flaticon

If you trigger yourself accidentally with IBS
Remember - don't beat yourself up. It will happen to pretty much everyone at some point.
Follow your doctors instructions in case of a flare, take it easy, and be kind to your body.
Tumblr media
A few things that help me when I trigger my IBS:
Hot water bottle (although I let it cool down a little before I use it to prevent hot water bottle rash (which you do not want, trust me))
Distraction (100% valid)
Gentle foods - crackers and dry toast initially (especially if I have badly flared myself), and then slowly get back into normal food
100% avoid the potential trigger food for at least a week to give my tummy time to settle
Sending spoonie hugs

Today's like yesterday...
@dduane is recovering from a really wicked IBS / lactose intolerance attack and I've been acting as medic & general helpmate, all while doing a Long John Silver impression after twisting my ankle when going downstairs in too much of a rush.
Wonderful... :-/
*****
This is a PSA of sorts for others prone to IBS / lactose intolerance.
Something that's safe cold may not be safe after heating.
As far as we can make out, the cause of this attack was a processed smoked-cheese-with-ham, despite it giving no trouble before now.
Tumblr media
Out of the fridge and sliced thin with crackers, great stuff. DD just took a Lactaid or similar to balance the presence of the milk products, and all was well.
On Sunday evening, however, she tried baking it in egg-enriched saffron-flavoured bread dough left over from making this loaf.
Tumblr media
Those little round things are bite-sized sausages. Very good, too.
Here's the cheese-stuffed version.
Tumblr media
Looks lovely, right? Fancy knife. too... :->
However, baking this cheese seems to have caused some sort of chemical change, as happens with cooking oil, or heat concentrated the milk proteins beyond acceptable levels.
Either way, even after taking her usual Lactaid precaution before eating a couple of slices, the IBS / lactose combo still hit DD like a hammer, and It Was Not Fun.
She's on the mend, though tired from lack of sleep (me too) and very achy from all the throwing-up, also vexed that there may be yet another food added to the increasingly long list of once-tasty things needing treated with extreme caution or avoided completely.
The problem is that she might now be sensitised against eating this cheese at any temperature, and there's only one way to find out.
As she's said more than once: "Every woman her own test-tube".
It's not as good a quote as the one about books and potato chips, but is just as accurate.

I hate the way sudden diarrhea episodes make me feel like all my guts were violently yoinked out of me through my butt. I feel so tired and worn out after, and I don鈥檛 know what to freakin Google to figure out how to bounce back from it. I can鈥檛 do anti-diarrheals, cuz they鈥檙e the exact opposite of the prescription med I鈥檓 taking for my gut stuff as a whole, and just uuggggggh
Butt fatigue. That鈥檚 what this is. That鈥檚 what this is and I hate it.
If anyone has post-butt fatigue recovery tips, lemme know.
