#Repost @serjtankian ・・・ Dear @repilhan , we are all scratching our heads wondering how someone so eloquent against injustice in the US can be so naive in her stance toward despots internationally as in your relationship with Turkey’s Erdogan. Your “present” vote today on HR 296 was a strange phenomena. I understand that Erdogan has sent money to help out the government of Somalia and you’re appreciative of that but that doesn’t mean you have to disregard his and Turkey’s horrendous human rights record nor actual history in reference to the genocide of my people, the Armenians. I have always thought of you as a smart, progressive force in Congress aligned with a majority of my beliefs so I am wholeheartedly disappointed in your support for Erdogan and his gag rule on genocide recognition in the US. One of your arguments is that genocide recognition is being used as a punitive measure against Turkey’s incursion into Syria. You’re right-it is. But realize that Turkey and Erdogan have specifically used the Armenian Genocide as geopolitical capital spending millions yearly on K Street and disinformation campaigns to rewrite history. Every purchase order for Apache helicopters from the US or fighter jets were political and economical capital and expediency against a vote for justice on genocide recognition. I am writing this in hopes that you will understand the gravity of your decision today and will change your mind accordingly. I’m glad that the House of Representatives is taking up the vote to recognize the Armenian Genocide, it’s too bad they’re doing it just to rebuke Turkey, and not because the United States wants to stand on the right side of history. But it doesn’t change the fact that the Ottoman Empire committed the first genocide of the 20th Century — in fact the word genocide was coined to describe what happened to the Armenians in Turkey during the First World War.
