Chuck smiled, “that’s pretty awesome. I know a few guys that I would kick if I had that power.”
“I used to help my mom in the garden at our house.” Chuck said, “I can see why it’d be so peaceful for people. I always just liked sitting amongst everything. It was kind of a way to unplug from the world.”

Chuck nodded sadly at Ororo. “I get what you’re saying.” She picked at her jeans and said, “I think I say him kissing that woman and just, it just sent me over the edge.” Wiping at her face she said “I mean he and my mom were divorced, but like, I never saw them like other divorced parents. They never argued really, the main reason they split was because he wanted to keep us safe. So I thought he had still loved her. But that’s not really fair to assume I guess.”
“I know he’d be fine with me being a mutant,” Chuck said, “he’d be the first to jump to my defense. But I just feel with such distance between us, I don’t feel like I can go to him like I once did.”
chuckcoulson‌:
Chuck nodded “I’d like that. Thank you Ms. Storm,” she sniffed and took a drink of her cocoa. She didn’t hate her father. Not really. She was just more confused by her emerging powers and everything along with his girlfriend May. “I don’t hate my dad,” she said aloud. “I’m just…sometimes I feel like if like he’s not a dad. Not to me anyway.”
Ororo nodded.  “I’m glad you don’t hate him.  Maybe you just need to take some time and figure out how to approach him on your own terms.  At the risk of sounding cliche, you’re going through a lot of changes right now, changes your dad is not going to be able to understand.”  He might have spent his life obsessing over superheroes, but exploring one’s own mutant abilities was something different.  It was almost spiritual.
“It might be that the two of you need to adjust what you expect from each other.  But I will say, if there’s a human who would take having a mutant child well, it’s Phil.”  It was sad that this was a point to clarify, but it was true.

Chuck took the book and said “thank you,” she put the book to her side. She felt tears well up in her eyes and she wiped them away. “This has been going on since before the outbreak.” She sniffed and said. “I’ve always been an afterthought to his work. I know what he did was important but it’s hard, having your life uprooted every time a bad guy looks at your dad wrong...”
“I don’t mind you and my dad being a thing,” Chuck said, “I mean it’s fine. I just hate feeling like I’m not meant to be part of this life...”

“Some people will tell you that.” Chuck shrugged. “I don’t think there is that much of a difference one way or another but people tend to think girls can’t control their emotions like guys do. I don’t believe that but,” she shrugged and said. “It’s the rumor.”
“Well that’s good you guys have had each other.” Chuck commented. “I know I probably wouldn’t have made it as far as I have without Malcolm. People aren’t cut out to be alone for that long.”

Chuck thought on it, “I always was good with science in school.” She shrugged, “but I don’t mind helping, in whatever field you guys need help with. I just feel a bit lost and overwhelmed at the moment.” She smiled shyly and said. “My dad has kind of left me on my own enough that I know I need to pull my weight where I can.”

She wants me for a babysitter so she and my dad could go off. Chuck didn’t say that, but that’s what she got from the conversation. In regards to her father she said “so I have to prove to him I still want to be his daughter? I didn’t know that expired.”
Chuck sighed, “I appreciate what you’re trying to do Ms. May, but I need to be on my own and figure things out. I need to talk to my dad but not until I’m ready.”

“I know,” Chuck said, sipping on the cocoa she said, “I know my Dad always has the best of intentions with everyone. He really does. But,” Chuck felt a bit crestfallen, “when May showed up, I felt like I was suddenly being shoved out the door. Like I don’t matter now that she and her kids are here.”
Chuck looked to her when she told that about her past, “I’m sorry, that had to be lonely.” Chuck bit one of her nails and said, “I don’t think, I just, I don’t know what to do.”
“There were plenty of homeless children in Cairo, we made a family of our own.”  She gave the answer with a smile that kindly refused pity.
“You can stay here tonight if you want to.”  She would let Phil know so he wouldn’t worry, for all he knew, Chuck could fly over the wall and disappear, since he didn’t know what her powers were, aside from shorting out a light bulb.  “That way you can think about what you want to do before you see him again.”

Chuck raised and an eyebrow and smiled, “That’s a pretty handy tool to have in the apocalypse I could imagine.” She put her hands in her pockets. “That sounds like something that could be my speed. I think Ms. Potts was telling me about the apprenticeships. May do me good to get my mind onto something different. Something focused.”

“Autodidacticism is highly underrated in my opinion – no offence to Storm, of course.”  She wondered if Ororo wanted everyone under seventeen to forget that she never went to school either.  “Have you got any skills or interests that might apply to a job around here?  I think that’s where you start, they train you from there.”  That was what she had seen anyway.  “I imagine your dad wouldn’t want you signing up for anything outside the walls.”
Chuck shrugged, “I mean, I was pretty good at science in school.” She tried to think of something she could do. “Not that it would really apply here but I was in gymnastics and took Jiu-Jitsu too…” She kind of laughed, “it’s not like I can high kick my way through the apocalypse.”
“I do, but only because I have these,” she slipped off her boot, it wasn’t flexible enough to use her claws, and pointed her toes, releasing one of her foot claws.  She retracted it and slid her shoe back on. “You know the science is probably something they want a hand with.  I think they’re looking at one-on-one learning and apprenticeships for what you would have gone to college for back in the world.”

“Thanks again for the help, Mr. Thor,” Chuck waived before heading off with Malcolm. Feeling a bit more confident in herself.

“I hope you will continue to feel safe, Chuck.  If there is anything I can do to aid you in feeling safe in future, you need only ask.  And I feel confident that Lady Sif, who is here with me and is also a friend of your father, will offer the same.”  Thor smiled warmly, “Because you also have me as a friend now.”
Chuck grinned and said, “I really appreciate that, and you can consider me a friend too. I may not be able to do much, yet, but if you ever want to play with my dog, you’re more than welcome to.” She ran a hand through her wavy red hair and continued grinning.
He gave a small bow to her, “The first steps are important as any other in our journey.  I think you are off to a great start, Chuck Coulson.”  He gave one final encouraging grin before he left her.

armoredrescue‌:
‘No not wrong.”  Quick to reassure her Pepper offered a smile.   “Though I think I have a way for us to be helpful for each other.”   The apprenticeships slowly rolling out, instituting a new(old) way of learning that would hopefully fit with their new world.  “You don’t have to get up, we can sit to talk if you want.”  Really she wanted Chuck to be comfortable.
“I don’t know if you have heard, but we started working with young people past the basics in education to get something more hands on.   Learning one on one with already skilled individuals in fields of their choice.   Not everyone knows what they want right away so they can switch between jobs if needed.”   The simple explanation she’d been using to introduce people to the new idea.   They couldn’t send kids off to collage anymore after all.   More practical now to do it this way.
So, it was her dad’s doing, or it sounded like it. Malcolm nuzzled himself under her arm and looked up at her, sensing her anxiety about it. Looking to Pepper, Chuck chewed the inside of her cheek and asked, “I hadn’t heard about it, but I don’t talk to a lot of people here.”
Scratching Malcolm, Chuck after a few moments asked, “what sort of things?” It couldn’t hurt to ask. Maybe it’d give her something to do other than mope.

“I think he cares a lot more than you think he does. Maybe it was his fault he wasn’t around when you were a kid, but he’s trying now. That counts for something,” May tried to reason with her. “And his ‘superhero squad’ is all pretty pissed at him. I can pretty much guarantee he would much rather be spending his time with you.”
“Navigating the outbreak wasn’t that simple. I had my entire team on my plane, besides your dad, when I took off from the SHIELD base. We got shot out of the sky and I landed to find none of my team was there anymore. How did I lose my entire team in a two hour flight? And with what Jemma went through–I can’t even imagine what happened with the others,” May said letting some of the emotion show for the girl’s benefit. It had been something she had been practicing since she took in her kids. “Give him a chance to explain. Give yourself a chance to get this off your chest. Keeping it all in turns you into someone like me.”
Chuck laughed, “he’s trying? That’s funny. You showed up to fight his battles, not him.” She ran a hand through her hair. “He was trying, then you and the kids got here and I’m back to being alone.”
While Chuck didn’t want anything to do with May, not really. She did feel for her though, “I’m sorry about your team.” Chuck said gently, “I watched my best friend get mauled to death, my mother never made it home.”

“To a certain extent, its unavoidable.  I simply don’t react the same way as someone in the same stage of physical development as I.”  Isaac remained rather indifferent to that fact.  “I simply prefer it when people don’t get all emotional about it.”
Excited about the activity Beaker ran too.   The half grown puppy tripping over his own feet.   Isaac kept careful watch over his pet.   He wanted the  young dog to be . . well happy.   Dogs were not creatures of logic after all.
She nodded, “I get that, I’ll try to keep my girly emotions in check.” She joked, and figured it wouldn’t register with him.
She watched the puppies play, it was a nice distraction from the issues she was having with her Dad and May. She smiled as Malcolm laid down to where Beaker tried to climb on top of him. “How long have you had Beaker?”

“I imagine he would put it together that it wasn’t a coincidence,” Ororo agreed, moving to sit beside Chuck.  “He showed up at the X-Mansion in 1999 when our public face was exclusively a school for the gifted, based on a hunch that we were actually harbouring young superheroes.”
Ororo took a moment to sip her tea, her braids shifted with the slight movements.  “I know that many people who have a parent who is passionate about their work feel the same as you.  Even if this isn’t what he intended, that doesn’t change that it’s the way you feel about this.”  Ororo sighed, “But, I imagine that if you ask him, he did think he was putting you first.  I imagine some of the times he stayed away were for your safety.  That doesn’t mean he always did the right thing, but I’ve seen enough superheroes try to leave the life to become parents, only to be drawn back in again and again.”
She smiled wryly, “I grew up without parents.  But from what I’ve learned from my friends, one of the more difficult things about growing up is coming to terms with the fact that your parents aren’t in control of everything.  But with all that in mind, you still feel let down and lonely, and those feelings are real.”
“I know,” Chuck said, sipping on the cocoa she said, “I know my Dad always has the best of intentions with everyone. He really does.
