₊˚⊹ ᰔ IN WHICH mydei has been acting more suspicious lately, and the chrysos heirs are determined to get to the bottom of it.
content. fluff + crack! not proofread and probably ooc. happy valentines! 🫶
mydei is acting strange today.
it hasn't just been today, but the past few weeks that he's been off in his own head — mydei, who's known for bringing havoc wherever he steps, has been mysteriously off the grid.
he's only present in meetings in a physical sense, his mind obviously filled with thoughts about other matters unrelated to his job — he's not even present in the non-mandatory meetings (even though he always used to), nor does he bathe and cleanse in the palace's hero pools.
aglaea thinks a trial of judgement might have to be made, trianne thinks he's just homesick, but ultimately, the heirs decide that it's best for phainon to figure out what's going on with him.
so, he does.
mydei is always up before the sun begins to rise (that part hasn't changed for some reason, much to phainon's dismay), so he starts to tail him before it gets bright, hiding behind the tree bark as mydei gets ready for the new day, stepping out of his home and walking straight into the plaza.
things feel normal for the first few hours — his rival is meticulous in his work, so he oversees their small military force with great care, even if he looks a little out of it sometimes. phainon doesn't usually spend the day staring him down every second, so he chalks it up to the man taking small breaks when no one's watching.
the first alarm bells ring when mydei finishes work far faster than usual, and takes off as fast as he can.
the deliverer decides that a bird's eye view would be best to keep a keen eye on the warrior who seems to be in a rush to go somewhere.
he finds out two things in the five minutes he sprints after mydei: one, that running after him puts all of his other workouts to shame, and two, the place that he's so keen on going to is a chocolate store.
phainon stops in his tracks immediately, skidding on the wooden rooftop he was running on.
he takes the moment to catch his breath, huffs of air escaping his lips as he wonders what insane titan possessed mydeimos "health nut" the undying, who refused to drink sparkling water a week ago, to willingly step into and out of a sweets store of all places.
hurriedly, he pulls out his teleslate.
Phainon: He just walked out with like two boxes of chocolates
Castorice: are you sure that's the same mydei
Phainon: Trust me, I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it either
Aglaea: Chocolates? Is he alright?
Tribbie: maybe he's just feeling sad ☹️ get better mydei!
Castorice: we're rooting for you, mydei!
unless it's to check up on his people and buy local cuisines and ingredients from kremnos, mydei rarely lets his presence made known in public, especially in the local markets where citizens are constantly crowding the booths.
that's why the second alarm bell rings when he not only confidently enters the market, but peruses the selection carefully.
mydei walks around, his eyebrows furrowed and his eyes intense like a man on a mission as he glances over flowers, rings, stuffed dromas, and golden scarabs, before stopping at a second-rate shop.
phainon doesn't mean to assume, he really doesn't, but the shop looks unkempt at best, and suspicious at worst — a ratted purple tent covering the objects inside, the market is too open for him to move and find a different view, so he stays planted, crouching lower out of mydei's field of vision.
he watches with bated breath as an elderly man comes out, greeting mydei with a smile. the warrior gives him a polite one in return, bending down to whisper something in the man's ear.
phainon's too far away to hear the conversation, but the elder visibly stiffens when mydei speaks to him, immediately rushing back into the shop to grab a small box, and placing it into mydei's open palms.
mydei's gleeful smile almost looks evil when he clasps onto the box, patting the trembling man on the shoulder before heading on his way right back out.
for the second time, phainon reaches for his teleslate.
Phainon: I think he just robbed someone in the market
Aglaea: What?
Castorice: what
Tribbie: WHAT
Phainon: Should I confirm with the man or keep following him?
Aglaea: Keep following him. I'll send someone to the market, keep us updated.
Castorice: we're rooting for you, phainon!
putting the teleslate back in his pocket, he sighs, getting rather weary of mydei's incessant energy.
it's his duty as a chrysos heir to make sure another one isn't doing anything suspicious, though, so he'll honor it, even if it means stalking the man through the holy city until it's sunset.
he follows mydei right up to the edges of okhema, and the final alarm bell rings when he turns around, his eyes scanning everything on ground level as if to make sure there's no one to follow him, before slinking off into a back alley.
phainon thinks he might be going crazy. there's no way mydei of all people would be doing something shady, and much less illegal, would he?
a squeal echoes off the walls of the dark alleyway, interrupting his doubts.
he jumps into action imediately, jumping over a planter pot or two to get to the cry for help faster, his breath quickening as he sees a figure standing close to the heir. phainon automatically reaches for his claymore, his fingers itching and ready to protect an innocent before he hears the figure laugh.
it's a familiar laugh, he realizes, it's you, the regular he often sees at the baths.
he inches closer, peeking his head down past the rooftop, finding mydei opening the box of chocolates for you, an uncharacteristically soft smile playing on his features.
"mydei," you frown, "i thought we said we didn't want to do anything special for valentines."
"i wanted to surprise you," he inches it closer to you, "don't be foolish, take a bite."
"i can't!" a small whine enters your protest, "I didn't get you anything, how could i—?"
"take it," he insists. he drops his voice lower, a softer question escaping his lips, "for me?"
you feel your face heat up at the request. how could you say no to a face like that?
you pluck a chocolate heart from the box, pointing to it's twin that lives on the other side with your pinky finger, gesturing for mydei to pick it up. "c'mon, loverboy. only if you do too."
he rolls his eyes, picking up the heart.
phainon stares in abject horror as you feed the man the chocolate, pushing the sugar against his lips as he does the same to you. you end the exchange with another excited squeal, flinging yourself haphazardly into mydei's arms — he stumbles back just a little bit, small bars of chocolate littering the streets as he stabilizes himself against the stone, one arm wrapped around yours.
phainon's teleslate buzzes (has it been buzzing this entire time?), and he gets momentarily distracted from the scene below him to find castorice sending in another message.
Tribbie: i just checked with the man, he gave him a gift for his child! i think it was handmade by mydei, and he was refining it or something
Aglaea: Oh, that's quite sweet, actually.
Castorice: aww that's so cute!
Aglaea: Any news, Phainon?
Tribbie: i think he's ignoring us ☹️
Aglaea: He wouldn't dare.
Castorice: phainon, are you there?
he moves to respond, before glancing down at you once more. you're still hugging mydei, your face buried into his chest as you mumble something under your breath. the problem isn't you, no, but the man you have your arms wrapped around making direct eye-contact with phainon.
his eyes flicker from phainon's to yours, before he delicately pushes you off his body, his expression morphing into a kinder one.
"i still have another present for you," he presses a tender kiss to your forehead, "let's leave all the single people here and go somewhere else."
"hm, what people—?"
"ugly ones." he grabs your hand, cocking his head farther down the alleyway, "c'mon, there's a way out back this way."
you agree easily, following him without a care in the world — you don't really care where you go with mydei, as long as you get to be with him.
unbeknownst to you, mydei looks back to phainon —a rival, but a friend and confidant nonetheless, someone he could always rely on in the heat of battle — with a shit-eating grin on his face, the type of smug look that only a mother (and you, apparently) could love.
single, and ugly.
phainon's eye twitches.
Phainon: It's an imposter. I'll bring you his head, Aglaea.
the teleslate buzzes once more while he readies his claymore to demolish the man that can't be more than a few blocks down — the man probably laughing his ass off with you, and doing other couple stuff that phainon couldn't even dream about.
as far as he's concerned, though, love dies today.
Castorice: we're rooting for you, phainon!
i am so tired goodnight ueueueue will be dreaming about my phainon/mydei polycule 🙏🙏🙏

❝ ── VALENTINE'S REMEDY ❞
❤︎ ❝ it's you.. it has always been you. ❞
८ sypnosis. valentine's day with : PHAINON & MYDEI !! (seperately). sfw. fluff. crack, gender neutral reader — MORDEN DAY AU . ؛ ଓ
@ warnings; none ! all fluff & cutesy valentines (๑﹏๑ ) ⋆
── notes. this valentines, i deliver this to you (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) , originally, i planned to have much more characters than mydei & phainon, but there are so many things happening that i couldn't do that — enjoy, nevertheless! I hope you all had a good valentine's day yesterday ♡
ᝰ.ᐟ PHAINON — cooking date.. ?
(wc : 997)
⟡ "(name)! I've decided—we should cook together for valentines!" Phainon proposes. Your face utterly falls at his word is absolute and full horror at the thought. Oh no. If there was one thing you should know about being Phainon's lover, is that he is horrid at cooking, unfortunately, you had to learn this the hard way. (e.g, your house coming close to catch fire if you hadn't stopped his myriad of senseless trouble)
⟡ "Are you sure? I mean—what if we just.. go to a café or—"
⟡ "No way! I wanna make cookies with you!" Phainon only implored further at your admittedly weak rebuttal, his demeanor akin to that of a beaming light (or a beaming puppy), you could only make an effort to avoid his eager gaze as he awaited your reply.
⟡ After a beat of hesitance and silence, Phainon pretty much tackled you onto the couch, one arm wrapped around your waist, the other rested on your forearm, pulling you impossibly closer to his own body, lowering his chin to rest comfortably on your shoulder with a huff, the cheeky grin still ever present on his lips as you tried to wrestle yourself out of his hold, muttering weak protests, which proved impossible in a matter of a second when you realized his muscles weren't just for show. "C'mon, can't my lovely partner and valentines indulge in my well-versed fantasy of baking together~?"
⟡ Thus, led you two to where you were now. Valentine's day was supposed to be cutesy, right? Maybe sharing a sundae, kissing under the sunset sky that boarded the horizons with a soft tint—instead of the intricate (admittedly, delusional) scenarios that you were conjuring just days prior, now, you are subjected to cooking with Phainon.
⟡ "(name)! Is the sugar supposed to be this flaky? And it's a little salty." Phainon exclaimed, remnants of 'sugar' on his fingers as he test-tasted them in his mouth, you looked over in horror.
⟡ "That's salt! You don't add that much salt to cookies?!" You shrieked. Things were going so well!! How were you supposed to know Phainon couldn't differentiate sugar from salt? As you tried to scoop out the salt from the mixture of butter, eggs, and vanilla extract, you spared a glance to see Phainon looking at you expectedly, his eyes were that of a puppy, and you knew him well enough to know that he was sulking, and you couldn't bare it in your heart to scold him (you did it anyways).
⟡ Your boyfriend was a basketball player, a real good one, sure—you didn't know that would affect his baking skills, though. Phainon (read: attempted) to throw the egg into the mixture, stance that of a basketball throw, only for the egg to splatter onto the ground. One ominous call of his name from you, got the white-haired male quickly begging for mercy, splutters of "I'm sorry! (name)! H-hey, please put down that knife!" cascaded from his hurried begs.
⟡ "Hand me the flour." You noted, feeling a bag soon resting in your hand, however—as you poured, you decided to spare a glance at the bag. You inwardly sigh to yourself, catching Phainon's back collar to turn his face around, forcing him to take a good look at the bag. "This is baking soda!" Unfortunately, Phainon only offered a sheepish grin before hastily freeing himself out of your hold, in fear, probably.
⟡ You'd love to say his misfit of troubles stopped there, but it definitely didn't. You almost curse your whole ascenstor's family tree when Phainon called again. "(name)...? Uh, is the microwave supposed to be glowing?" You looked back hesitantly. Yes, the microwave was glowing. With a metal bowl inside of it. I love my boyfriend. I love my boyfriend. I love my boyfrie—
⟡ "How much longer?" Phainon was then exempt from further participation in the baking, sulking, he attached himself to your back, subjected to only being able to watch you bake, due to his tendencies to cause a mess in the kitchen. "Wait a bit, you really are impatient." His arms wrapped around your waist, your back met his chest, and he lowered his head to rest on your shoulder as you mixed the bowl of ingredients with a practiced technique. You could almost feel his sullen pout despite not looking at him.
⟡ When you pulled the cookies out of the oven, Phainon was quick on his feet behind you, shuffling to get a closer look (and, hand sticking out to try and grab one but was quickly dismissed by your own hand grabbing his to cease his quick-witted endeavor). The cookies were chocolate flavored, something Phainon insisted, saying it's 'valentine' coded, and sprinkled with specks of pink sprinkles, in Phainon's eyes—they look like heaven sent offerings from the goddess that you embodied.. maybe an exaggeration.
⟡ "Say ahh." You held a cookie to his face, to which he immediately beamed, opening his mouth as he awaited the dessert to be delivered to his mouth, when it did, he instantly smiled—if Phainon did have a tail, you imagine it'd be wagging right then.
⟡ In a moment of unfocused haze, Phainon cupped your cheeks into his much larger palm, pressing his (chocolate infused) lips onto yours, in turn, making you nearly shriek in surprise. You tasted a faint chocolate savor against his unexpectedly soft lips, you're only left still dumbfounded when he pulled away.
⟡ "C'mon, yer gonna watch me eat, or will you eat your own phenomenal cooking, too?" Phainon grinned, a boyish smile overcame his features as he slid a hand through the tufts of his white hair.
⟡ ".. Yeah yeah, alright." Perhaps this valentine wasn't actually that bad, you hummed to yourself, tasting a cookie, relishing in your boyfriend's cheerful expressions. The cookies tasted saltier than they should, but you found yourself not minding.
⟡ Still.. you make a mental note to keep Phainon out of the kitchen.
ᝰ.ᐟ MYDEI — arcade date !!
(wc: 1174)
⟡ "Try to beat me." Mydei grinned, a competitive look rose in his eyes, you almost scoffed, your hand tightening on the console handle.
⟡ Currently, the two of you were situated at an arcade. Now, you’re not sure what Mydei’s idea of a fun valentine’s day is, but apparently to him, it was a competition. For goodness’s sake, doesn’t he get enough competition in his basketball matches? But despite all odds, you were still swooned by the competitive man, and you really can’t lie because Mydei being competitive also makes you competitive in turn.
⟡ “Please, indulge me, o strongest of all.” You beamed back, a combative shine coating both of your eyes, neither of you broke eye contact. Only when the game’s ‘ancient’-like machine erupted a small, distorted, “game start!”, did you and Mydei consecutively locked in, eyes fixed on each’s little pixelated character.
⟡ The valentines date, turned out to be one big, competitive game to you both—and to no one’s surprise, Mydei kept tally of each wins he got. “I win. (name), it almost feels as if you’re letting me win on purpose, don’t go easy on this boyfriend of yours!” Mydei grinned, his arm slung over your shoulder casually, a shit-eating smirk painted over his face as he made absolutely no effort to conceal the pleasure he attained. You could only stare at the ‘GAME OVER!” words on your own arcade machine (indubitably, a bit pouty).
⟡ However, once he noticed your sullen mood, Mydei quickly panicked, a rushed ‘oh shit’ nearly escaped his mouth, but he was quick to shut it, he mentally scolded himself inside of his head, before ushering you for one more game, this time, he wanted to raise your mood, rather than anything, as fun as it was winning for him, it was much better when he sees you smile.
⟡ When you do win, you swiftly whirled to Mydei with the brightest smile on your face, finger pointing at the screen that showed Mydei’s pixelated character in a defeated position, while yours did some tacky emote dance with 90’s music singing from the machine. He smiled, ruffling your hair in leisure, ignoring your slight protests of “don’t mess up my hair?!”
⟡ “C’mon,” Mydei held up the arcade card between his pointer and middle finger with a smirk visible on his face, bringing his gaze to the other arcade game machines, ”You wanna miss t’day and all the money I spent on you, or you wanna play more?” He leaned closer—leaving your heart stubbornly speeding up.
⟡ Thus, the two of you spent your valentines in the arcade game spot for around 5 hours at best—creating pompous feuds and rivalry for the sake of it, but for some reason, you couldn’t help but notice Mydei lost more times than you’d think he would, I mean, no offense, but he play games like anytime he’s free, surely he should’ve won each feuds easily? Before you could rack your mind on his foreign behavior, the air hockey immediately slotted itself into your goal as you let your mind wander, causing you to lose a point, much to your horror. “Hey! My eyes are up here! Ya losin’ already, (name)?”
⟡ You sent a glare to his direction, picking up the hockey from your goal to immediately fling to his direction with your mallet, only for the hockey to (somehow??) fly up and hit Mydei square in the face, so, you technically did achieve a headshot, just not in the goal.
⟡ “Holy shit—I’m sorry! So sorry! Mydei, are you okay?!” You spluttered, hand hovering in all directions over his face as he rubbed his palm on the area where the hockey quite literally pounded him, Mydei raised a hand to stop your stuttering, a grin broke out of his (pathetically) kind of painstrucken face, obviously, it was bound to hurt.
⟡ Putting aside the rough. . encounter, Mydei only brushes you off, “It’s okay,” he’d said, before adding, “but I don’t know . . a kiss might make it even better?” good to know that Mydei’s brain, on the contrary, hasn’t changed. You thought.
⟡ The rest of the day went on without any further casualties, basketball games (to no one’s surprise, Mydei surpassed the original highest score, earning himself a spot in the leaderboard), racing games (you somehow won this one, where you immediately hopped up and down with Mydei’s hand in yours, you didn’t look back then, but if you did, the sickly love struck face on Mydei’s face looking at you fondly would’ve probably imploded you from the inside out), dancing games (Mydei slipped and nearly fell on you–but with his muscular stature, he caught himself and you from falling in public, thank god no one was there to witness), and . . claw machines, which personally, agitated you.
⟡ “.. Move over, let me try.” Mydei groaned, weary of watching you fail time and time again to get a pink-ish red cat from the claw machine that just kept bouncing further away from the blissful exit everytime you moved the claw, to the point where you were one touch closer to crashing out in public, given your.. shortcoming.
⟡ For some sicken reason–as if the gods were taunting you, Mydei was able to grab the cat plush toy on his first try, your mouth agape as it jeeringly falls into the exit slot, where Mydei took it into his hand to dangle the plush in front of your face with a shit-eating grin, a look of triumphant curled on the tips of his attempted nonchalance.
⟡ “I hate you.” Grumbling, you still took the plushie into your arms.
⟡ “Say that all you want, darlin’, I know you love me.”
⟡ ... as the two of you left the arcade, hand held in each other's, intertwined, some imaginative cupid floating around bow in hand, as a small (delusional) cacophony of choir song hummed, an unexpected popped from behind a counter.
⟡ “See, Aggy, they do get along well!” Tribbie’s cheerful voice rang, as they hid behind a counter–not in a conspicuous location at all, Castorice nodded, hopeful for her friend.
⟡ “.. I suppose I was worried for naught. (name) is in good hands, then.” Aglaea smiled, despite the 3 girls still being hunched under a counter. Without context, they looked more like stalkers, than friends ‘passing by’ and deciding to spy.
⟡ “Mydei is. . strange. But I believe he really does like (name).” Castorice hummed, her voice, soft and delicate, in contrast to Tribbie’s cheerful tone, and Aglaea’s calming timbre.
⟡ “Well, since we’re here already, Aggy, Cas, let’s go play some games!”
⟡ (PS. word has it that you gave Mydei handmade chocolate earlier during the day?! Also, Mydei was practically shaking, the tips of his ears a burning red when he received the chocolate you so delicately made and packaged in a red-tinted heart box. Don’t tell anyone–but I heard from a little bird that this same man giggled to himself after the arcade date ( ꈍ◡ꈍ) !)

NOTES:
- 43 rmb chinese yuan - $5, or wtv currency you have - kevin kaslana sucks at cooking (read: made kitchen appliances run for their life), therefore, phainon fucking sucks at cooking, no debates you take what you can get. - it is REALLY hard to write Mydei in modern au, considering like literally what would this guy be agitated about? But i consider him to be someone that yearns for the normalcy, rather than the chaos he shrouds himself in, similarly to kalpas from hi3. I think of Mydei as someone who is more suited for a modern life, no fights, violence, just peace - but he is always destined to end back at the aggression of the battlefield. haha!! - Phainon is so stupid i love him he's like a kicked puppy LMAO

এ phainon’s experience ᪲﹕ one kiss, one love ! ᪲ honkai: star rail ᧔ fem-reader.
࣪⊹ phainon gives his first kiss to his crush, you. he’s a bit shaky, but he’s got the spirit !!
+ extra: not beta (yet) ⸝ (pre 3.2) anaxa & mydei appearances ⸝ i desperately need to have phainon oml
“It’s never too late to go back home — just saying.” Anaxa gave you sincere advice, closing his book with one hand to re-direct his eyes on you.
You’re seated on the loveseat, straightened posture giving away how nervous you were. You didn’t need to stutter or swallow before speaking for the two boys to know you’re nervous. With such a stiff look it’s difficult for them to not tease you and Phainon indirectly.
Your lips stretch — it’s not a smile, but it’s not a frown either. It’s stretched in an awkward position, similar to you awkwardly shifting eye contact between Anaxa and Mydei. Sometimes you give them a nod, sometimes you go with a lifeless chuckle. It’s been a couple minutes since Phainon left to neaten up his room but gosh, the time couldn’t drag any slower.
“This is no way to treat a lady. He couldn’t have cleaned before?” Mydei scoffs, leaning back into the sofa with folded arms to emphasize his annoyance.
“What do you know about treating ladies?” Anaxa teases, but it’s a genuine question. One that came from the bottom of his heart.
Mydei raises an eyebrow, scanning the other boy before he licks his lips, “Watch your mouth, nature freak.”
“There’s nothing wrong with appreciating the green of the world. You wouldn’t understand — it’s okay, though, I get it.” Anaxa nods at the end.
Before their banter exploded, you quickly interrupted, cutting Mydei’s response off.
“How long have you guys known each other?”
A calm, small talk inducing question. You should give yourself a pat on the back.
“I don’t know him.” Almost as if they planned it, both Anaxa and Mydei replied with the same sentence.
You poke your inner cheek with your tongue, scratching the back of your neck at the tension rising between the two. Maybe it’s just you. After all, it seems like they’re just joking. Who knows!
A glaring contest begins. The cool eye from Anaxa meets the aggressive eyes from Mydei. And a third one that’s just here for fun. The third pair of eyes belonging to Phainon.
“What are we doing?” He questions, eyes making a triangular pattern between you, Anaxa, and Mydei.
Your heart jumps. You certainly weren’t expecting him to stand behind you with his hands on your shoulders. Such an entry is definitely Phainon’s style.
Mydei breaks the eye contact with Anaxa, immediately frowning at Phainon.
“Were you in there scratching your ass or what?”
“I got nervous.” Phainon admits.
“So you spent… twenty minutes being nervous… because of her?” Anaxa slowly asks, almost as if he can’t believe what he’s saying.
“More or less, yeah.” Phainon shrugs, feeling no shame in short circuiting. “Anyway, I need to borrow her, thanks!”
Without time to give your input, Phainon moves his hand lower to grip your wrist, gently pulling you off the loveseat and into his freshly cleaned room.
Once you're face-to-face with his door, he softly pushes you in first, following behind to lock the door. His room’s surprisingly minimalistic. A few toys here and there, a drone for whatever reason, and a sword’s sheath? You can’t tell if it’s fake or real.
“Nice room.” You compliment.
Phainon smiles, making a beeline to a corner to remove his sweater and then back to you. Once again, his hands find themselves on your shoulders, pushing you towards his bed.
You mimicked the same posture you used on the loveseat — fighting the itch to put a foot on the bed. You have to remind yourself it’s not your bed, It’s Phainon’s.
Phainon, however, doesn’t care whether you raise a foot or not. He’s in his mind contemplating if this is the right time to bring up the topic. He can’t last any longer hiding his feelings. Phainon’s running out of excuses — he blamed his sweaty palms on hyperhidrosis when in reality it’s because he gets nervous when you’re too close.
And this. Nothing is casual about bringing a girl into your private space — especially one shared with two others.
“Hey,” Phainon starts, drumming his fingers against his thigh to distract himself. “Can I ask a question?”
You hum, eyes following the rhythm of his fingers drumming his thigh.
“Have you, uh, ever wondered about relationships?” The question doesn’t quite come out the way Phainon imagined.
The expression on your face turns into a puzzled one. It’s not an odd question by any means, but it sure is a random one.
“Mmm, I have. Why?” You tilt your head, moving your eyes back to his.
“Do you want one?” Phainon swallows.
Suddenly the back of his head feels hot. The room feels hot, too. Although the air conditioner’s set on a temperature to battle the heat outdoors, so it should be anything but hot inside his room.
“Phainon what are you saying, honestly?”
Your second question went unanswered. Phainon bit his lip, praying that you can’t hear his heartbeat pounding against his chest. It’s almost deafening in his ear.
“Can I steal a kiss? Only if it’s okay.” He spoke with no shame but his eyes gave away the true feeling beneath.
You’re stunned for a moment. Sure, you had your suspicions being invited to his house would’ve gone somewhere, but not this fast! You’ve been in his room for less than thirty minutes, and there are two others.
Traveling your eyes from Phainon’s eyes, to his lips and back to his eyes, a teasing smile lights up your expression.
“Usually thieves don’t ask before they steal.”
“Is that a yes?” He’s hopeful, fighting back a smile himself. It’s a useless battle, however. The tips of his ears are already dusted in red.
Nodding, you lean in, licking your lips to moisturize them. You’re unsure of where the boost of confidence came from, but it’s here now. Any regrets will be handled tomorrow. You’re now under the influence of confidence.
Phainon’s hands move to cup your face, leaning down to place a light peck as though he’s testing the waters. His eyes remained open while yours are closed — so he goes for another kiss.
This time, he does it properly, shyly moving his against yours. Your lip balm transferred to his lips, but he doesn’t mind. Phainon’s in a trance; captivated by how soft your lips are. How light your hand on his thigh feels. How gentle he’s cupping your face. He’s lost in you, and it’s only the beginning of the trail.
Breaking the kiss, you keep your eyes on his lips, moving your hand to his now plumped lips. There’s a slight tint of red on them — must’ve originated from your lip balm.
Phainon’s head rests on your shoulder. Reality hit him a bit too late. He’s boldly asked if he can steal a kiss when he has no experience in the field whatsoever. His heart’s racing against his chest and the back of his neck feels warm.
He can’t understand how you’re calm after kissing. Have you done it before — never mind. He won’t sour his own mood.
“You okay?” You softly asked, raising a hand to comb through his hair.
“Yeah.” Phainon whispered, allowing himself to enjoy your fingers raking through his strands before sitting up.
“So… Can we do that again?” A boyish grin debuts on Phainon’s face. Aside from cringing at himself, he can’t believe he shared his first kiss with you.

capitano x GN!reader
» summary: capitano saves you during the war with the abyss and you get to know each other. sadly, things are not meant to be. the right person at the wrong time type deal
» rating: sfw
» notes: this is angst. it doesn't end well. capitano is such a tragic character, i couldn't write a happy ending for him. sorry!

“get behind me!”
hours has it been since the abyss’ invasion upon your homeland, and with all the vision bearers in your group defeated by the monsters, the burden was passed to you to protect the children and the elderly. although you are familiar with the sword in your hands, you tremble now in the face of your enemies concealed by the thick dark fog around you.
word has it the heroes and the outlander are going around helping people. if that is the case, then your caravan has to be very well hidden, for none of them have shown up to help so far.
you pray someone finds you. oh, archon, please let someone-
you are snapped out of your thoughts by a snarl to your left and you barely have any time to shift your posture and raise your sword. the strange-looking wolf clamps down on the steel, growling as it’s denied a bite of your flesh. you shake with exertion, feet planted firmly in the ground. soaked with blood as it is though, you end up getting pushed back.
you can’t give up here. you can’t let the creature topple you. you have to protect these people.
a pair of hands finds itself upon your back. you chance a glance back to find the very people you’re protecting watching you with equal fear and determination. more hands join that pair, and as they push forward, you are stopped from sliding backwards.
they don’t say anything, but you know this: you are not alone in this.
and with an emboldening yell, you grip the sword tighter in your hand and you push forward, slicing through the wolf’s jaw open. it yelps and retreats, and you’re about to cheer for your first personal victory, when a sharp scream penetrates the air. swishing around, you find a child raised in the air, held by a mighty mitachurl with an axe in its other arm.
someone yells out the boy’s name, but the sound is muffled against the pounding of your heart as you dart past the group of people, hand outreached to save the child. you’re not allowed to do this, however, as another wolf dives in from your side to close its jaws around your shoulder.
panicking, you dig your blade into its flesh and you swing it in whatever direction, splitting the creature in half and making it let you go. when your eyes are back on the mitachurl, it is raising its axe to cut down the people in front of it. you won’t make it. you know you won't. this powerlessness creeps up under your skin; the battle is over.
just when you’ve lost all hope, a gunshot echoes through the fog. the mitachurl releases its axe with a metallic clang and the claws around the boy’s neck go loose. your body moves seemingly out of its own volition, for before you know it you are lunging forward. the boy falls into the safety of your arms and you crouch, cradling him closely to shield him with your body.
and then you feel something warm spray across your face. you look up, and the hulking churl has been cut in half. as it comes tumbling down, you see a tall man standing behind it clad in armor you do not recognize. a helmet obscures his face, yet you know he is looking directly at you.
you’re tired and out of breath, but you grip your sword in your hand all the same and raise the steel blade against this foreigner.
he merely swings his sword to get rid of the blood stuck to it.
“stand down,” he finally speaks and his voice is so deep and gravelly it rumbles in the depths of his chest. “we’ve come to your aid.”
fatui soldiers emerge from the darkness. is he a fatuus then? unsure of their allyship, your weapon remains pointed at him.
“how do i know that you’re not one of those shapeshifting monsters?” you ask.
“have you ever heard them speak?”
you turn his words over in your head. he’s right, they don’t speak, and they certainly don’t kill their own. you lower your weapon at last and release the boy in your arms, who immediately runs to find his mother.
after a deep breath or two you manage to stand back on your feet to face the stranger.
he asks, “are there any more fighters among you?”
“i’m afraid i’m the last one standing,” you reply. your hand shakes as you sheathe your sword. the man places his hand on your shoulder, pulling your attention back to his hidden face.
“you fought well.”
you blink as tears well up in your eyes, and you quickly turn your face sideways to wipe them away. when the man lets go of your shoulder, you suddenly feel a throbbing sensation burn through your arm and chest. you wince and grit your teeth, hand coming up to squeeze the wound in search of reprieve. it does not help, and when you look at your hand, it is stained with blood.
the wound makes itself known once the adrenaline subsides and you have to sit down on a nearby rock. the man does not leave your side, instead now fretting about you, if you could call it fretting. he takes your arm and rakes up your sleeve to reveal something dark spreading through your veins from the bleeding bite.
“corruption,” he says, “you have to get that purified as soon as possible.”
“yeah, well…” your tone is dripping with sarcasm as you sneer. “i’m sure the doctors have nothing to do right now.”
you search through your pouch and pull out some bandages. it’s not perfect first aid, but it will have to do. “can you and your men turn around, please? i’d like to treat myself.”
the fatui oblige and you are granted a semblance of privacy on the battlefield to take off your upper clothing and bandage your wound with trembling hands. they don’t seem to stop even now as you’re kept safe by the group of soldiers. you clench your fists in an attempt to calm them, then you get dressed again and join the rest of the group.
“what now?” you ask as you stand beside the armored man. “who are you anyway?”
“now you’ll evacuate to the stadium. it’s safe there.”
“you? you’re not coming with us?”
he shakes his head. “there are still more monsters to slay.”
“i…” your mouth opens and closes as you weigh your words. “i’m not sure i can protect these people all on my own.”
“fret not. nikita!” a huge man clad in purple armor walks up to the two of you and salutes. “pick three men. you’re staying behind to help these people get to safety.”
“yes, sir.” nikita wastes no time in fulfilling his task.
the other fatuus turns back to you. “stay safe.”
“don’t worry, i won’t let your soldiers die.”
he looks at you silently for a moment, which makes you wonder if you said something strange. but then he wordlessly walks away and his soldiers, apart from those 4 he left you, follow closely behind.
“wait, helmet guy!” you call out to him. the fatui seem to recoil in shock at the nickname but it does have the desired effect of stopping the man in his tracks.
“helmet guy..?”
“thank you! for helping us.”
the stranger nods and then disappears in the dense fog once more.

“everyone, we are gathered here to celebrate a glorious victory.”
the pyro archon stands at the center of all attention, as she always has. the tavern is packed with people, all heroes, some greater than others. a bittersweet taste of victory at the cost of many lives lingers in the air. it is in true natlanese fashion that people celebrate not with tears but with alcohol, laughter and gratitude for their sacrifice.
you sit at the very back, watching as the orange liquid in your cup swirls around. you can’t hold this way of grieving against them, and victory does have to be celebrated. but as you mull over all that has happened, you find yourself lacking any sweetness. it is only the bitterness that you feel towards everything that the abyss took from you.
you finish off this cup, order another, and make your way outside to get some fresh air. the stairs seem to sway beneath your feet but you retain your balance as if you were completely sober.
the air feels pleasantly cool against your hot cheeks when you step outside. despite the battle that took place just moments ago, it smells fresh. everything is so serene. it pisses you off.
kicking a rock along the way, you sit down at the edge of the wall, feet dangling over nothing. somewhere all the way down you hear the gentle rushing of water. cheers, then. you raise your cup. to all your dead friends, to this nation of endless struggle, and to that fucking hole in the sky your archon blew an hour ago. you take a swig, and whatever spills down your chin, you wipe away with the back of your hand.
“enjoying the night?”
of course you’re not left alone for long. a deep familiar voice comes from behind you and thankfully you’re too drunk to get spooked. a slip is all it would take for you to die, which would be comical after all the fighting you did to stay alive.
“sure!” you slur. “enjoying, yeah. you could call it that.”
the tall man appears by your side. he sits down next to you, though he leaves some space between the two of you.
“hey, helmet guy. why didn’t you tell me that you were a harbinger?” you try to make out his face underneath the helmet, but all you get is a vague outline of a face in the darkness of the night.
“i saw no reason to.”
“no reason to? your soldiers weren’t very happy about the nickname i gave you,” you grumble.
“did they give you any issues?” he asks.
you ponder for a bit, staring off into the distance. “no, actually… they were really nice. it surprised me.”
whatever comment rests on capitano’s tongue, he swallows it back. this is not the time to be snarky. he sees it in you - in your heavy shoulders, in the lack of life in your eyes, in the slight tremble in your hands that you try so hard to contain. this loss has hit you hard.
“you’re like me,” he says after a long pause.
“how so?”
“you carry the ghosts of those you cared about in your heart. you grieve with anger and sadness - that’s why you’re here alone, just like me. the others don’t give themselves time to sit with sorrow but you do, because your heart won’t allow you otherwise.”
you clutch your chest, shirt wrinkling as your fingers dig into its fabric. a deep frown forms on your face. it’s ugly. you feel ugly. bitter tears well up in your eyes. “you don’t know our culture.”
“culture or not,” he says, and suddenly you feel the weight of his hand on your head, pushing you down into a bow, “you are human. just cry if you need to.” you’re about to give him a piece of your mind when you hear the sound of footsteps behind you. a group of people walks past, all laughs and words meaningless to you.
he’s hiding you.
the tears can’t be contained now. you watch them drip down into your cup of alcohol, and a sob wracks your body, the last straw that breaks the sumpter beast’s back. you set the cup aside to hide your face with your hands.
capitano remains by your side, silent as you break the night’s quiet with your cries.

“what are you doing here?”
when capitano returns to the fatui camp after his research, he is surprised to see your familiar face surrounded by his subordinates. you’re all sitting around what seems to be a pot of some kind of stew, which you pour onto a plate along something that resembles a smooth dumpling.
it’s a puzzling sight indeed.
all the soldiers freeze and stammer to explain what’s going on, however as they talk over each other not a single coherent explanation is heard.
you merely smile up at him, and capitano feels something shift underneath his rotting flesh.
“fufu?” you ask, holding out a plate.
capitano is speechless for a moment. “what?”
“fufu. that’s what this is called. do you want some, harbinger?”
you roll the word ‘harbinger’ on your tongue like it’s some sort of plaything, and… he’s not finishing that thought.
“i’ll have to politely decline. can we talk privately?”
you hand the plate over to nikita, who’s sitting next to you. he speaks up before you: “if i may, lord capitano - is y/n in trouble? we figured inviting them to our camp would be fine, but… if there’s anyone to punish, it should be me.”
capitano sighs. “we’ll talk about that later.”
you finally stand up and follow the man to a more secluded area, kicking up rocks as you go.
“why are you here? are you not scared?” capitano says at last, after a good while of unbroken silence. his tone gives away his exasperation.
you smile and a hint of exhaustion shows its face through the facade. you take a seat on one of nearby boxes. “scared of what? the man who saved my life, or his subordinates who won’t stop talking about their wives back home?”
“both. this is a fatui base. under normal circumstances, your head would be separate from your body by now.”
“i also imagine that under normal circumstances the fatui don’t support other nations in war or comfort grieving drunks.” your cheeks turn pink as you speak and pick at your nails. “what we’ve found ourselves in is pretty far from normal.”
the captain watches you, you can tell despite not having a clear view of his face. he’s studying you, and it makes you shift in your seat uncomfortably. you find yourself not hating the discomfort.
“why are you here?” he asks again.
you hold back your words at first, thinking them through before speaking them. “i just felt that it was unfair not to include your men in the celebrations. i figured a good meal could lift their spirits… as thanks. and yours, too. but they told me that you never eat, so i guess i should have thought of something else.”
“no.”
you raise an eyebrow at him quizzically, and when he turns his head to glance their way, so do you. the two of you get the perfect view of your men gushing about the food, some even fighting over a plate.
“i haven’t seen them this lively in a while. your presence is welcome.”
and you take his words to heart. the camp becomes your second home. sometimes you even sleep over. the fatui are kind, as strange as it is to say. nikita warns you that it’s only them that are this way, that the other harbingers’ forces are not so nice. you suppose it’s true - it’s not like you have any other experience. still, you bond with them - most of all with capitano.
there’s something about every conversation you have with him. he’s clearly a very intelligent man, but more importantly you feel like he understands. you take walks together whenever you can and you help him out with whatever he needs - truth be told, it’s just another excuse to be near him and to talk with him. you even like to think that he enjoys your presence as well.
you’ve caught the soldiers giggling at the two of you multiple times.
your favorite talks are the ones spent under the stars. something about the moon and the stars pulls at the strings of your soul, and neither of you can help each other from sharing your sorrows and joys.

“so you meant it back then… we both carry our own ghosts. though i suppose it is more literal in your case…”
you stand leaning against a wooden railing, watching as the sun sets over the horizon. the breeze that tousles your hair is gentle and pleasantly cool.
when capitano invited you for a walk together, you knew it would be different from the ones you usually took. he seemed more introspective, more anxious somehow. his shoulders, usually so straight and broad like nothing could topple them, looked just a tad heavier than usual.
and then he confided in you. told you that he’s khaneri’ahn, that he’s fought the abyss once before and that he feels a kind of connection to your homeland. you feel for him and for all the soldiers’ voices that he’s had to listen to the entire time. you feel his grief.
he must be so tired.
“there’s no need to pity me.”
his voice brings you back to the present, and you turn your head to face him, wide eyed. “ah… yeah. you know, not all compassion is pity, captain.”
he would usually correct you, say it’s “lord capitano” to you, but for whatever reason he doesn’t. instead he just lets out one of his ‘hmph’s.
you look back towards the horizon. “the sunset is beautiful today…”
“indeed,” capitano says, yet his eyes don’t leave your face.
“it’s hard to believe the abyss itself was here just a few days ago,” you smile, and when you look at capitano one final time, he’s suddenly much closer to you than he was before.
you freeze, gazing up into where his face should be. capitano’s hand comes up to cradle your chin and tilt your head, and for a moment you have the fleeting thought that he’s about to kiss you.
but he doesn’t. his clawed thumb traces your lips, and when he pushes down on your lower lip they part to make way for the shaky breath that escapes your lungs. he just remains quiet, eerily quiet.
“thrain,” you mumble. he suddenly sucks in a deep breath as if snapped out of a trance and lets go of your chin, stepping away from you. your own fingers trace the spot on your lip where his thumb was mere seconds ago.
“i… i apologize. something must have come over me.” capitano is panicking now, a state you’ve never seen him in before. he always gives off an air of absolute confidence, like nothing could shake him, his eyes pinned to a single goal ahead of him.
yet now you’ve captured his gaze, and it’s put a crack in his resolve.
“you should go home. while it’s not too dark.” capitano steps further back from you. “good night, y/n.” and then he turns his back on you and briskly walks away.
you find it almost comical, the way he flees from you, unable to stop yourself from chuckling. good night indeed.
but as you would find out the moment your body hits the bed, sleep eludes you for the majority of the night. by the time you manage to fall asleep, you’re wondering how he’s managed to do this for 500 years.
when you wake later in the day, you waste no time in rushing out of the house. you don’t feel hungry or thirsty, you just - want to see him. burning questions lie on your tongue. how long has he felt the same as you? would he accept you, if you were to accept him? your legs carry you all the way to the fatui camp, and your eyes light up when you find him.
but then you also spot ororon. you freeze. though he’s usually deadfaced with little emotion in his voice, he’s now looking rather panicked as he explains something to capitano. something’s going on. should you intrude..?
before you can actually do anything, however, the two of them turn to leave and you’re found out. capitano hesitates before finally making his way over to you.
“y/n,” he says. his voice is full of… something. you have a hard time identifying it. is it grief? is it want? is it everything all at once?
“what’s happening?” you ask. capitano and ororon exchange looks.
then, capitano speaks: “each of us have a part to play in this war. i think mine has come at last. to end it all, once and for all.”
“i don’t like the way you said that. where are you going, capitano?” for the first time, his helmet pisses you off. you wish you could look into his eyes, see what kind of expression he’s making.
“we don’t have much time,” ororon urges.
capitano lifts his hand and rests it on top of your head, which dips under the weight. he caresses your hair with a surprising amount of gentleness.
“i wish we could have met earlier. but now, at least you can enjoy a lifetime of peace.”
something in you cracks.
“what’s going on? is this goodbye? if you’re leaving, then let me come with you! i have nowhere else to go anyway!”
he shakes his head and lets go of you. “i’m sorry.” without saying another word, the two of them depart.
yet the promise never comes. you’re left all alone, standing in the middle of an empty camp.
“thrain!” you yell after him. he does not stop. “promise me you’ll come back to me! please!”

heavy legs carry you up the stairs of ochkanatlan. though this place is normally off-limits, when ororon finds you back in the camp and tells you that you should go there, you rush over with zero hesitation.
natlan is a tropical country. yet now as you climb these stairs, you suddenly feel chilly and your quickened breath comes out in puffs of steam. somewhere deep down, you already know. you knew when he left, and you’re even more certain now. and as you finally ascend the final step and you see him on the throne, surrounded by massive crystals of dark ice, it becomes all too real.
thrain is dead.
yet you can’t bring yourself to cry. your feet remain planted in the ground as you watch his soulless body. his chest rises and falls but you know that he’s not there, it’s just the curse controlling his undead body like a puppet.
fate must truly hate you. is it your destiny to lose everyone you’re ever loved?
at last, you approach him. everything feels so slow.
“you know, i was so happy last night that i couldn’t sleep,” you say. “because it finally seemed that i would not be alone for the rest of my life. i thought that even if you were to leave, i would gladly follow. i’m sure many of your subordinates feel a similar way.”
there comes no reply. you cast your gaze downwards.
“i can’t hold this against you. you’ve fought for so long and… you deserve this rest. but what about me?” you bite your lip to stop the delayed tears. what do you do now, knowing that he loved you?
you wipe at your eyes and sniff. then you lean forward, grasping the helmet with your bare hands. you plan on taking it off at first, but ultimately you decide against it. if he didn’t want to show you his face while he lived then that’s something you’ll have to respect even after his life.
so you kiss his helmet instead. your lips meet the cold metal as the first hot tear runs down your cheek, and you crawl into his lap. it’s okay if you rest together, right? you’re not ready to leave yet. wrapping your arms around his neck, you bury your face in his cold body.
just once, you would have liked to have been held in those arms.

ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤHARSH WINTER , WARM CAPTAIN.
pairings; capitano x reader ⸝⸝ romantic
content warnings; spoiler for 5.3 aq ✘ tiny mention of gore ✘ down bad capitano ✘ major character death ✘ angst ✘ mention of capitano's real name ✘ no beta we die like teppei lmao ✘ 691 wc.
syn. right person, wrong time.

They say the first of the harbinger is a cruel man. A heartless being who teared the hearts of his enemies in cold blood.
The Captain has many names, many of which are insults. Yet, you never fail to call him honey-sweet terms. Maybe that was what caused the great Capitano to fall deeply in love with you; the honesty in your eyes, the smile you always gave unconditionally.
Your will to be yourself.
If Capitano was the harsh winter of Snezhnaya—the shiver running down one’s spine or the storm that people fear, then you would’ve been the gentle fireplace where everyone gathered to warm themselves. But also the peace who calmed the storm.
Within your presence, Capitano’s frozen heart began to melt. Showing a golden man who carries too many burdens. His heart bears the burden of others; he carries the will of others with him—the will of the fallen. A responsibility heavy for mind, but Capitano continued to shoulder it. His heart who cared for his peers—for his soldiers.
Capitano is one of many things—a soldier, a warrior, a leader and a harbinger.
But in your arms, adorned by the moonlight as the witness to your love. In your arms, where his past no longer haunted him. In your arms, he discarded his title as The Captain/Capitano and becomes his true self.
He asked you to call out his name—his true name, the one he used centuries ago. With your soft voice lulling him to sleep, with your fingers playing with his hair, braiding it here while detangling it there.
In your arms, Capitano—the first of the harbinger was no more.
In your arms, he could forget himself.
In your arms, he felt loved.
And in his arms, you felt safe.
He was as much of a pillar to you as you were to him. With Capitano, you never feared that the freezing winds of the north would extinguish your flame. He was like an unshakeable wall, for he defended you from any harm that may come. Capitano loves you.
He showed it in many ways; from brewing your favourite drink for you to enjoy while reading beside him, to lending you his larger coat whenever the winter is too cold for you to bear. When Capitano loved, he puts his whole heart.
For him, to love is to give it all.
For Capitano, to love you is a duty he shall never fail. A beautiful soul like yours is rare to come by, but when it does one should care for it so as to never betray the trust it gave.
Yet somehow, despite the rocky start the relationship had—you always stayed beside him. Even when he hurt you with cruel words, or when he ignored you in times you needed his attention the most. Capitano was the definition of a scum, but you never left. Stubborn as you were—and still are, his side was never left empty thanks to you.
He didn’t know whether to be grateful or not. Does this sinner of a man truly deserve an angel like yourself? He wondered.
However, you proved his worth every time. You accepted him whole from the moment you caught a glimpse of his vulnerable self. You had fallen first but he had fallen harder.
″ To my dearest, I am not one for words, but I will try. For you. Every morning I wake, I thank the archons for blessing me with your presence. Every time my eyes lay on you, I find myself mesmerized. My dearest, Thank you. For being with me for so long, for staying and for loving me. I’m sorry. I will not be able to return your embrace no more. I’m sorry. Even in death and never ending slumber, know I will continue to love you. My heart is forever yours. From yours truly, Thrain. ″
As tear stains merged—both from yours and his, you hug the letter tight against you. Once more, just like that night—you cry out his name. Sobs and wail. Similarly as he had given you his heart, you buried yours along with him.

"Shit!"
Looking towards the door to the hotel room and making sure that you didn't hear him coming, you quickly ran over to the second bed.
It was your plan to get a single bed for the hotel room you both were staying at, so why in the hell were there two?!
Ok, relax y/n. You can still fix this!
Rolling up your sleeves you quickly got to work by grabbing one end of the mattress and lifting it. You weren't good at folding and taking apart stuff, but you were willing to try if it meant fitting this second bed into the closest just so you could cozy up to Capitano.
"What are you doing...?"
You froze in place. The mattress raised above your head as you turned to look over at Capitano who was standing in the doorway. It truly wasn't fair that he could walk so quietly despite how big and strong he was...
"Uhmmm... on my way to get a smoothie."
"With the mattress?"
"Yes."
You both stared at each other for a moment before Capitano sighed.
"You don't have to take apart the bed just to sleep next to me."
"...yes captain..."

"You sure you want to do this?"
You walked beside him, as you usually did. Your footsteps falling in line next to his own, but unlike his - your feet made no imprints against the dirt. How could they? It wasn't like you were alive after all.
"I've always been sure."
Much like his comrades, you too were sheltered within Capitano's heart. A burden he carried along in his immortal life.
"Whatever you say..., you know i have to ask anyway."
Capitano finally looked at you, at your form that threatened to disappear with each step he took. How you managed to stay materialized in this form was beyond his comprehension, but you managed it well.
"And why must you torture me like this?"
He watched your expression shift into something unreadable before you smiled up at him.
"Cause you'd be lonely. Now, chop-chop. The Pyro archon isn't going to be saved with you just standing here."
"Right..."

No One But You
Food for the @pixelcafe-network
Sylus lay in a pool of his own blood, clutching the gunshot wound you had carved into his heart, muttering about betrayal and deceit in his final moments.
You rolled your eyes.
“Yesterday’s death was a hell of a lot more creative, Sylus.”
He sat up straight, scoffing. “Can’t help if the source material is unoriginal to start with. The best you could do was a gunshot wound today? Really?”
“That’s because I wasn’t trying to kill you, stupid.”
He raised an eyebrow. “And what do you call plowing a bullet through my chest?”
You crossed your arms. “I call that trying to shut you up. Although, I suppose that didn’t work so well either, because then you prattled on about what a traitor I was and how you never saw this coming. Which, in my humble opinion, was laying it on too thick. You always see everything coming, don’t act like a victim.”
He chuckled and with a snap of his fingers, any trace of his blood or his wound had vanished. “What can I say, I like theatrics.”
“And I like my bosses to be less dramatic and less alive.”
He stood to meet your gaze, tsking at you as he tucked a finger under your chin. “Now, now, kitten. We’ve been having such a grand time together the last few months.”
You waved his hand away but he caught your wrist. You knew once he had you in his grasp, you weren’t getting out until he chose to let you go so you stopped resisting. He smirked, pleased at your submission.
Sighing, you grumbled, “Sy- you’ve got a 1 o clock meeting and I’ve yet to thoroughly vet them, so eventually you’ll have to let me go.”
He yanked you closer to him. “I highly doubt my favorite assassin would forget to vet anybody. I’m sure you already had him in your sights long before I made the meeting, am I correct?”
You met his brazen gaze with a fierce look of your own. “I suppose now that you know all my secrets, I really will have to kill you.”
He chuckled and kissed your knuckles. “Looking forward to it.”
Asshole.
He knew that you knew you couldn’t kill him if you tried, because you’d already tried. Many, many times.
You’d met him months back when you’d attempted to snipe him from a rooftop. You were the best in the assassination business, but something about this cheeky bastard who had the nerve to grin into your oculars right as you pulled the trigger had you feeling like an amateur again. And when he materialized beside you right after you’d supposedly shot him, offering employment rather than retaliation, you knew he wasn’t taking you seriously at all. How could the head of Onychinus allow an assassin to walk right into his headquarters, to eat and drink beside him, to sleep in the room next door, knowing he had a hefty bounty on his head that she intended to collect, and not bat an eye? He was some other beast entirely and you weren’t sure how to react.
Of course it made you feel valued to know that he only entrusted his most important missions to you -he’d say something along the lines of “there’s no one else who can do the job but you” and you’d roll your eyes but oblige him- but he must’ve still thought you were somewhat incompetent if he willingly allowed you to take a shot at trying to kill him everyday. And then there was the matter of his obvious flirting.
The way he always had your favorite wine laid out for you after a mission -you weren’t sure who he’d tortured for this information- or the way he always made sure to take you on missions with him that involved dressing up so he could admire your figure -not like he wasn’t already admiring it on a daily basis in your usual getup- or even the way he purred his little pet names in your ear, pet names that he didn’t seem to give to anyone else but you.
Some small part of you even wondered if maybe he loved you. But the rest of you knew that he probably didn’t even know what love was. The rest of you knew that he was probably toying with you. But what was he waiting for? For you to no longer be useful? For you to fall for him? For you to give up on killing him? What did he want?
The man had the most beautiful eyes you’d ever seen but you would never know what was going on behind them.
And it killed you to admit that he was beautiful. Rule number one of assassination was to not get attached to your target, but here you were, toasting him over dinner every night, admiring the curve of his lips, admiring the broadness of his shoulders, admiring the way his fingers held a wine glass, like you hadn’t spent decades training to be the monster you were known to be, like you were just some school girl hanging onto some jock’s every word.
He probably knew it too.
He liked to tease you; it was like his own personal form of entertainment.
He liked to intertwine his fingers in between yours like you hadn’t just used those very same fingers to try and strangle him only moments before. He liked to tuck your hair behind your ear, pinch your sides, pin down your wrists, tilt up your chin, anything so he could touch you. He liked to murmur your name, your real name, the name you hadn’t been called in years, the name you weren’t sure how he’d uncovered, over and over like a prayer, until you had to excuse yourself from dinner because you weren’t used to the gentleness in his voice. And then he liked to repeat the cycle over and over again, until you weren’t sure how you felt anymore, until you weren’t sure who you were anymore.
“Bastard.” You muttered under your breath.
“Trying to hurt my feelings?” Sylus snaked his arms around your waist.
“It was never my intention to hurt you, dear Sylus, only kill you.” You responded innocently.
He chuckled, running his fingers through your hair. “That’s my girl.”
God, he couldn’t keep saying this shit to you.
“Not your girl, Sy.” You retorted, shaking him off of you.
“And why not? You could be.” His eyes gleamed mischievously.
In an instant you had a knife pinned to his throat. “Because of this. Because you’re nothing more to me than a target and I’m nothing more to you than a toy.”
He leaned in closer to you, allowing the metal to pierce his skin, drawing blood. “Well if it makes you feel better, there’s no one I’d rather have kill me but you.”
You laughed at that, withdrawing your knife. “Should I feel honored? And how does one even respond to that- there’s no one I’d rather have toy with me but you? God, work on your lines Sylus, you’re so cliche. You have a 2 o clock meeting, so get to it.” You shoved him off of you.
Grinning, he sauntered off to his next meeting with you guarding his back like you always did. And when his 2 o clock tried to kill him, he kept that same stupid grin on his face as he watched you pin the man underneath you in a matter of seconds, cuffing his hands together so tightly they bruised.
“Is it appropriate to say I’m feeling jealous right now, kitten?” He chuckled.
You scoffed. “No, Sylus, it is not.”
“And what if I said there’s no one I’d rather have pin me down than you?”
“Still not appropriate.”
The man underneath you groaned. “If you two are going to keep flirting or bickering or whatever this is, could you kill me already?”
You smacked his head with the butt of your gun. “Shut up, we’re trying to talk here.”
“Feisty. I love it when you talk like that, kitten.” Sylus ran his hand through your hair, the way he always did, admiring the way the strands felt in between his fingers.
“Funny, I love when you stop talking, Sy.”
The man squirmed beneath you again. “I’m serious, please just kill me already.”
“I said shut up, my god.” You tightened his cuffs.
But this time the man was annoyed. “He’s toying with you, you’re toying with him, we get it already. A man like Sylus is never gonna truly love you so can you please quit flirting an ki-”
You shot him in the head. “Did I not say to shut up?”
You had intended to keep him alive for information, but you had to admit his comment hit a little too close to home. You already knew Sylus was never going to love you, but was it that obvious to a random bystander? The thought pissed you off.
Sylus sighed. “And now I’m going to have to get the carpet cleaners in here.”
“You really should keep the company of quieter people.”
“And you should know when a man is baiting you.”
You scoffed, standing to leave. “And what’s that supposed to mean? I know when I’m being played, you do it all the time.”
“You’re so gullible sometimes, kitten. You’d really believe what a random hitman says?” He wrapped one arm around your waist, pulling you closer, and tucked one hand underneath your chin, drawing your gaze to him.
“I don’t believe what anyone says.”
“Yet you’d kill him for saying I could never love you? Interesting way of showing you don’t believe him.”
You glared at him, anger flaring in your gut. You attempted to wrench yourself away from him but he only pulled you tighter against him. “Sylus, let go already. Enough of this. I’m tired.” You snapped.
“Haven’t I already told you? There’s no one else for me but you.”
“Sylus, quit saying shit like that.”
“Right, you don’t like when I talk. Well then, how about this?” In a matter of seconds, his lips had found their way to yours, molding his passion and persistence into you.
You bit his lip in annoyance but it only fueled him more.
He chuckled against your mouth and claimed your tongue with his. His hands rested on the small of your back, possessively holding you in place against him. After properly swallowing down your moans and devouring all your desire, he finally pulled away to allow you some breath.
“Fine.” You whispered, still dizzy from his kiss.
He smirked, nuzzling up against your ear, as he murmured, “Fine what?”
“Fine. There’s no one else for me but you. Happy?”
“Immensely.”
He kissed you again and didn’t stop kissing you all night.

Sylus
Summary: Sylus struggles to put your baby girl to sleep.
Warnings: Pure Fluff
Discord +18 - Twitter - Ko-Fi - Bluesky
You’ve never thought you’d find Sylus in this situation. You’ve pictured your husband doing a lot of things– But this? Never in a million years.
You want to step into the room, but you can’t allow yourself to interrupt. The scene fills your stomach with butterflies, and reminds you why you fell for him all over again. The man really has a softer side that many don’t get to witness. You see it often; but no one will see it as much as her.
“Twinkle, twinkle– I guess you don’t like it.” Sylus’ singing is cut off by his baby’s cries. He’s rocking her back and forth, hoping to get his baby girl to fall asleep. He promised you that he’d take over so you could take the night off, but tonight his babygirl is as energetic as ever.
Though the singing stops, the crying doesn’t. He shushes her before telling her, “I promise I won’t sing again.”
The shrill cries stop, but his baby’s eyes are still wide open. She’s a difficult one to fall asleep, and he knows exactly who she got that from. Offering money won’t work with her yet, so he’s forced to play a waiting game.
“I’m trying to spend time with your mom, love. C’mon, help me out.” She laughs at the tired look on her father’s face, and Sylus can’t help but smile. She’s laughing at his misery, but at least it’s a cute laugh.
“I’ll get payback one day.” Sylus says as he lifts her in the air before blowing a raspberry on her tummy. Another laugh comes from the little one. He kisses her chubby cheeks, pure joy overtaking him.
“You’re lucky you’re cute, I’d be mad otherwise.” He tells her, earning a coo from the energetic girl. He chuckles.
“I can handle her.” You finally step into the room, cutting off the sweet moment between Sylus and your baby girl. You don’t want him to get frustrated with her, even when he looks overjoyed to just hold her.
“It’s fine.” Sylus assures you. He’s smiling down at her. “I can handle my little sweetheart.”

18+ only mdni pls thank u :D also its my first time writing smut/something this explicit so please be kind 😭
kissing sylus is always such a dizzying experience, one that you can swear drives you to borderline insanity.
you usually catch him in one of two moods.
one, is when he likes to take things slow.
it's a few hours past midnight, hours past the time you should've went to bed if you wanted to get up early for work tomorrow. but you don't mind. really, every single bone in your body is screaming at you to stay where you are, perched right on sylus' lap.
your legs settle on either side of his thighs. they’re beginning to feel like jelly, nearly numb from being in the same position for so long. both of your hands are on his shoulders. your fingers dig into the fabric of his sweatshirt. an attempt, but ultimately a feeble one to ground yourself.
likewise, sylus' hands are glued to your thighs. his palms glide over the bare flesh, fingertips brushing against the hem of your shorts. beneath the thin fabric, he draws circles with his thumb, each drag of his rough pads on your skin brings him closer to the lace of your underwear.
he’s got no sense of urgency as he pulls away, lips lingering just a hair away from yours before leaning his head to give your neck the same amount of attention. you turn your head to the side for his convenience, and he gladly takes it as an invitation to smother the entire length of your neck.
sylus works diligently, lips moving in an almost snail-like pace as if to say that you've got all the time in the world. he doesn't move to another patch of skin until he's sure there are marks in the greater vicinity of each area he covers.
his lips travel down to your shoulder, leaving wet kisses in his wake. he takes the thin strap of your camisole between his fingers, toying with the fabric enough that it slips off. his teeth sink into your skin.
your breath hitches when that delightful mix of pain and pleasure hits your senses.
it's almost too much, the way he's taking his sweet time with you. how he pours the same amount of utmost care and attention over each inch of skin he comes across, until you somehow find yourself resting on your back at the couch.
the flimsy fabric of your camisole rides up. you find it harder and harder to breathe as he runs a hand over your bare stomach. sylus plants his lips right above the garter of your shorts.
he tugs at the garter while he holds your gaze, an unspoken way of asking for your consent. your nod is accompanied by a quiet hum that he takes as his cue to pull your shorts all the way down, tossing the garment carelessly over his shoulder.
you're left in your camisole and underwear. it's far less skin than you've shown sylus before, who's seen and memorized every little nook and cranny of your body, but you still feel the urge to squirm. to shy away from his touch and to hide from his eyes that nearly burns holes into your skin from the intensity of his stare.
but he doesn't give you the chance to do either when his hand flies to your inner thigh, slightly spreading your limbs apart.
“don't go hiding on me now, sweetie.” his lips replace the hand on your thigh. the teeth that digs into your skin makes you whimper. “relax, we've got all night.”
other times, he's overtaken by the carnal need to devour you whole.
he's got you pinned down on the mattress. the cool silk beneath a stark contrast to your flushed, heated skin. it serves as a reminder of how sylus can get you all hot and bothered with little effort.
you two have been going at it for what feels like hours, but it's barely been ten minutes since he dragged you from his office by the waist, the cookies you baked for him sitting long forgotten on his desk.
sylus pulls away, just enough to have you rising from the bed as your parted lips chase after him on instinct. he can feel the ghost of your lashes as your half lidded eyes flutter open.
you pout. sylus struggles to hold down the chuckle blooming from his chest.
"stop being mean.”
"i don't know what you're talking about, sweetie." sylus acts innocent, but he's got a shit-eating grin on his face that lets you know he's messing with you. "am i not allowed to breathe?"
he says it like it's the most obvious thing in the world. like he's never pushed you to the boundaries of how long a human being can last without oxygen. like he doesn't place a firm hand on the back of your head to keep you from catching your breath.
sylus full-on laughs when you turn away from him, shifting your body as much as his tight grip on your wrists will allow so that you're angled away from him.
cute. he thinks. did you really think he can be denied that easily?
sylus releases his hold on one of your wrists. his now free hand finds your chin, fingers lingering above skin for a moment before he uses just enough force to turn your head towards him.
you gasp. the tiny sound you make that's barely louder than a whisper travels straight down.
for half a second, you lock eyes. but you're determined to keep up this little charade despite the hand on your chin, eyes darting to look at anything but him.
“kitten,” he feels the way you squirm beneath, can almost feel the shiver running down your spine. “look at me.”
with little hesitation, you will yourself to face him. and when your eyes find his, sylus wastes no time in capturing your lips between his own.
it's awfully pathetic, you think, the way you gasp for the second time in less than a minute. but you don't think you can pin the blame on yourself entirely when it's sylus.
sylus, who's rapidly starting to fill your senses, consuming you wholly. he's in each breath of air you take through your nose, a mix of leather and cedarwood fogging your mind. he's all you can ever think of tasting as his tongue works wonders inside your mouth.
hell, he's even in the back of your eyelids. a picture forever burned in your mind, a memory carved so deeply into your soul.
he slots himself between your legs, dragging one of his thighs up the sheets until it meets with your core.
sylus swallows each sound you make, from the quietest whimpers to the most shameless of moans, as he grinds his thigh against you. the muscle presses into you with pressure that's enough to drive you crazy, but not enough to send you careening over the edge.
he knows this. of course he does. he notices it in the shortening of your breath, chest heaving and contracting deeply. in the frantic way in which your fingers travel across the large expanse of his back. in your soaked pajama shorts that's slowly seeping through the fabric of his pants.
“what's the matter?” and he'd be happy to give you more, to give you that push you need to reach blissful release. “tell me, sweetie, what do you want?”
only if you ask nicely.
“sy-” you manage between baited breaths. “please, i- i need more.”
“i’m not sure i get what you mean. care to help a poor man out?” his pace relents, leaning forward in a mock curiosity. satisfaction courses through his veins when he hears you whine.
his pants are starting to strain uncomfortably, the last bits of his restrain wearing thin. he wants you, as much as—no, a lot more than you want him. but he wants to make sure you get your fill first.
it's you above everything, after all.
“sylus, i need you-”
“you have me.” sylus presses against your clothed clit. “or is this not enough for you?”
you shake your head, desperate for release. “need you inside, please.”
“well,” he smirks, reaching down to move your underwear to the side before sliding right into your hole. the gasp that falls off your swollen lips is music to his ears as he starts rapidly thrusting two of his fingers in and out. “since the kitten asked so nicely, who am i to deny her request?”

sylus x reader (fluffy,angsty?)
summary: “During a mission, I sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. Though Sylus couldn’t visit me, he sent Mephisto in his place. When I was discharged, I wasn’t expecting him to be outside.”
“I’m not going to lie to you two.” Jenna said, folding her arms across her chest as she leaned back against her desk. “This mission isn’t like the others we’ve done. That facility is more unstable than we initially thought. The few teams we’ve sent to investigate before found nothing at all.”
Crossing my arms as I studied Captain Jenna’s face.
“So why send just the two of us, then?” I asked.
“Why not a full squad if it’s that dangerous?”
“Because we don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with. A bigger team could draw too much attention.“
“And if we find something… unexpected?” Tara asked.
“You report back immediately.” Jenna said, her tone firm. “Don’t try to take on anything alone if it’s beyond your capabilities. This isn’t about being heroes.”
There was a beat of silence before Jenna pushed off her desk and took a step closer to me and Tara. “But you’re not going in blind. We’ll have a team on standby if things get too hot. You need to trust your instincts and watch each other’s backs.”
Glancing at Tara, she gave me a reassuring nod.
Tara and I turned to leave, but Jenna’s voice stopped us just before we reached the door. “And remember.” she called out, “If things start to go sideways, you get out. Do you hear me?”
“Loud and clear.” I replied, glancing over my shoulder at her.
With that, Tara and I exited the office, both of us knowing that we were walking into something dangerous. But we had our orders.
———————————————————————
The facility loomed over us, the metal creaking with the weight of its own decay. Tara and I moved cautiously through the halls, weapons at the ready, our footsteps echoing against the cracked concrete.
Dust hung in the air like a fog, making each breath feel heavy. We’d been searching for signs of Wanderers for hours, but aside from a few ominous claw marks on the walls, there was nothing.
Tara walked a few paces ahead, her sharp eyes sweeping the darkened corners as she scanned for any signs of movement.
“This place gives me the creeps.”
“The readings are coming from this sector.” I confirmed. “It’s like there’s a cluster of energy sources in the storage area up ahead. Something’s definitely drawing them here.”
Tara nodded and pushed forward, keeping a steady pace as we approached the large metal door that led to the storage room. She placed a hand on the door’s surface, glancing back at me. “On three?” she whispered.
I tightened my grip on my gun and gave her a quick nod. “On three.”
“One… two… three!”
Tara shoved the door open, and we moved inside in a swift, coordinated motion. The room was just as the rest of the facility, old crates and equipment lay scattered across the floor, and the walls were covered in peeling paint.
I took a step forward, my eyes sweeping the room for any signs of movement. But then, there was a flicker of motion in the shadows, too quick to pinpoint at first.
I turned to Tara, but she had already seen it. Her eyes narrowed, and she raised her weapon in the direction of the disturbance.
“Stay sharp.” she said, voice tense. “I think we’ve got company.”
I reacted on instinct, surging forward to intercept it with a gunshot.
It swiped at me with one of its jagged claws, forcing me to block the strike with my forearm. Pain shot through my body as its claws tore through my sleeve and left deep gashes across my skin.
Before we could even do anything, the wanderer let out a loud roar and smashed its claws against the support beams around us. A low rumble vibrated through the building, and the ground beneath us trembled. Dust rained down from the ceiling, and a series of cracks split the concrete walls, spreading out in every direction.
“Get out of here, now!” Tara shouted, sprinting for the exit.
I turned to follow her, but the ground heaved under my feet, and a section of the ceiling gave way with a deafening crash. I stumbled and fell, barely managing to roll out of the way as a massive metal beam slammed down where I’d been standing. The room shuddered violently, and the walls seemed to cave inward.
“Tara!” I called out, but my voice was drowned out by the roar of collapsing debris. I saw her struggling to keep her footing near the exit, but then another tremor hit, and a cascade of rubble came crashing down, forcing us apart.
I fought to keep moving, dodging falling beams and lunging over shifting pieces of debris. But it was no use. The floor buckled beneath me, and I felt myself falling through the collapsing structure.
The impact knocked the wind from my lungs, and pain exploded through my side as I hit the ground hard. I tried to move, but my legs were pinned beneath a heavy chunk of concrete, and the darkness quickly closed in around me.
The last thing I saw before everything faded was the shattered remnants of the facility above, crumbling like a house of cards. Then, there was nothing.
———————————————————————
The steady beep of a heart monitor was the first thing I became aware of as I drifted back to consciousness.
The world came back in hazy fragments, a faint antiseptic smell, the dull ache radiating through my entire body, the blinding white light overhead. I blinked slowly, the ceiling tiles came into focus. I was in a hospital room, covered in bandages, and every muscle felt like it had been dragged through hell.
A groan escaped my lips as I tried to shift into a more comfortable position. The movement must have caught someone’s attention because I heard a chair scrape back and then footsteps rushing closer.
“Hey, hey, take it easy.” It was Tara’s voice, low and familiar, filled with a relief I hadn’t heard from her often. She came into view, her face creased with worry. Her eyes softened when she saw I was awake, and she let out a breath that sounded like she’d been holding it for a long time. “You’re finally awake. How are you feeling?”
I managed to lift my head just enough to give her a weary look. “Like I got hit by a train.” I rasped, my voice rough from disuse. “What happened to me?”
“You were inside when the building collapsed.” she explained, pulling a chair closer and sitting down beside me. “By the time we got a rescue team in there, you were unconscious and pinned under the debris.” Tara’s voice wavered slightly, and she quickly looked away, as if embarrassed to show how much the whole thing had shaken her.
“You’ve been out for a while.” Her tone was a little lighter now, a hint of humor breaking through. “Can’t believe you’d scare me like that. Do you know how annoying it was waiting around here?”
A faint chuckle escaped me, though it quickly turned into a wince.
“I should let the doctors know you’re awake. They’ll want to check you over.”
I gave a slow nod, already feeling exhaustion pulling at me again, but I didn’t want her to worry. “Go ahead.” I murmured. “I’m not going anywhere.”
As the door clicked shut behind her, the room fell silent again, and I found myself staring at the ceiling, fighting the familiar feeling of emptiness that came whenever I was alone. I closed my eyes and let out a slow breath.
I wished Sylus were here. There was no way he could just walk into a hospital like any normal person.
I was about to close my eyes again when I heard a soft tapping on the window. My eyes snapped open, and my heart skipped a beat as I turned toward the sound. There, perched on the narrow ledge just outside the window, was a black crow. Mephisto.
I struggled to sit up, limping a little as I reached out to unlock the window. It slid open with a creak, and Mephisto hopped inside, a small bundle of wildflowers clutched in his beak. They were ragged and windblown, a little wilted from the journey, but I could tell they’d been picked carefully.
I took the flowers gently from Mephisto’s beak, my hands trembling slightly. There was a small note tied around the stems with a piece of dark string. I untied it and read the familiar handwriting: “Since I can’t be there. Take care of yourself. – S.”
Sylus couldn’t come to see me himself, but he’d sent Mephisto instead. His way of saying he was there, still watching over me.
“Thank you.” I whispered
Mephisto tilted its head and gave a soft caw, as if acknowledging my words. Then, it took off out the window again.
I sank back against the pillows, holding the flowers close. It wasn’t the same as having Sylus here in person, but it was enough to know he was thinking of me.
———————————————————————
As I lay in the hospital bed, I reached for my phone on the side table and unlocked the screen. My fingers trembled slightly as I typed out a message to Sylus.
I hit send and waited, my heart beating a little faster than it should. The minutes dragged on, and I started to wonder if he'd even seen my message. But then, my device buzzed with his reply.
Typical Sylus.
The response came almost instantly, as though he'd been expecting my question.
I glanced back at the window, half expecting to see the crow still there. It made sense. Mephisto had always kept an eye on me, by Sylus’s command.
I stared at the screen, my chest tightening as I read his words.
There was a long pause before his next message arrived.
It was the closest thing to comfort I would get from him, even if he couldn't be here with me.
———————————————————————
The final paperwork was a blur, the nurse’s instructions fading in and out as I focused on keeping steady. I was bandaged up and aching from head to toe, but at least I was getting out of the hospital. They’d wanted to keep me a few days longer, but I’d insisted on leaving.
As soon as they handed me my things, I slipped into my jacket and headed outside.
When I pushed through the front doors, a figure was leaning casually against the side of the building, half hidden in the shadow cast by the streetlamp. Sylus. He looked up when he saw me.
“Sylus…” I said, managing a small smile as I walked over, but his expression was tense as he straightened up, his eyes quickly scanning over my injuries.
“You’re stubborn for a hunter.” he muttered, his tone flat, though I could tell by the way his eyes lingered on my face and my bandaged arm that he was probably worried.
“The hell are you doing out here so soon? You could barely stand a few hours ago.”
“They were going to keep me trapped in there another week,” I said, trying to sound lighter than I felt. “I couldn’t just stay there doing nothing.”
He gave me a sharp look, he slipped his arm around my shoulders, guiding me firmly to his car parked a few feet away.
“You’re barely out, and here you are, thinking you’re ready to run around already.”
I tilted my head, raising an eyebrow.
"Since when do you drive anything other than that death trap of yours?"
"Since I figured you might not be up for riding around on a motorcycle after getting half crushed under a building."
He helped me into the passenger seat, taking extra care to ensure I was settled in before closing the door. He didn’t say anything as he walked around and got in himself, but the silence felt heavy, like he was holding back from saying a thousand things.
We drove through the streets in silence until we reached the edge of the city. I realized where we were going the moment we turned onto a narrow road.
“Your place?” I asked, glancing over at him.
He kept his gaze on the road. “You’re not going home alone in that condition. Not happening.”
I knew better than to argue, so I just nodded.
When we finally arrived, he was already at my side, opening the car door before I could even move. I tried to slide out on my own, but he offered his hand, steady and warm, and before I could argue, he was lifting me out of the seat.
I groaned, shaking my head. “Sylus, I can walk. You don’t need to—”
“Too late, sweetie.” he smirked, his arms sliding under my legs as he pulled me up, holding me effortlessly in a bridal carry. “Just sit back and let me do this.”
I sighed, trying to hide the warmth creeping up my face. “I’m tough, you know.”
“I know you are.” He glanced down, a glint of amusement in his eyes as he carried me toward the door. “But you’re hurt, and besides,” he added, leaning closer, his voice softening, “sometimes, you need someone to take care of you.”
Inside, he led me to his room and gestured for me to sit on the bed. “Wait here. And don’t try moving around.”
I managed a small, sarcastic smile. “What, you think I’m going to run off?”
His gaze darkened. “You have a habit of being reckless.”
Before I could respond, he was already disappearing into the other room, returning moments later with a small first aid kit and a glass of water. He knelt beside me, unwrapping some of the bandages on my arm with practiced precision.
“I already saw the doctors for this.” I said, watching him closely. He ignored me, dabbing disinfectant on a fresh cut and glancing up with a glint of warning in his eyes.
“Clearly, they didn’t do a good enough job if you’re in this condition.” he replied, his tone clipped.
I sighed, not bothering to respond. Instead, I watched his hands move, careful but efficient, his expression focused as he replaced the bandages. He was so quiet, so steady, so… unlike his usual self. His eyes kept flicking up to meet mine, only for a second, before going back to my injuries.
“You don’t have to do this, you know.” I murmured, not sure if I was talking to him or to myself.
He paused, his hands stilling for a moment, before he looked up, his expression unreadable. “And if I don’t, who will?”
I watched him as he worked, watching how he gently wrapped fresh gauze around my arm, tightening it carefully.
His fingers lingered over the bandage, as if making sure it wasn't too tight.
"Is this too tight?" he murmured, his gaze flicking up to meet mine.
"No... it's fine." I whispered, feeling my heart hammering in my chest. My words were barely a breath, and I wasn't sure if he heard me, but he continued anyway, his focus unbreakable.
"You can tell me if it hurts." he said softly, his gaze locking onto mine.
"It doesn't hurt." I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. But the truth was, all I can think about is how his fingers felt against my skin.
“You could have been killed.” he suddenly said, the faintest tremor in his voice. “And you didn’t think to tell me, or anyone, what you were dealing with out there?”
I looked down, feeling that familiar pang of guilt again.
“Tell me next time before you go off on one of these suicide missions.” he snapped, his jaw tight. “Or better yet, stay out of places where buildings collapse on you.”
“I don’t get to pick and choose which missions are dangerous.” I replied.
“And I’m supposed to sit back and just watch you throw yourself into the line of fire?” His voice was low, but I could hear the worry simmering beneath it.
He was silent for a moment, his expression hardening as he reached over to brush a strand of hair from my face.
“And next time, you’re telling me about this kind of mission. I don’t care if you think it’s nothing.”
My expression softened as I looked up at him
“I’m okay now.” I whispered.
He stared at me for a moment before he gave a reluctant nod.
“Try to rest here. I’ll get you some fresh clothes.” he said, guiding her down gently. “I’m guessing you don’t want to stay in those all night.”
I took the bundle of soft, comfortable clothes he offered.
“Thank you, Sylus.”
His lips quirked into a gentle smile, running his fingers lightly through my hair, guiding me to lie back against the bed.
“Enough fighting it, sweetie.” he murmured, his voice low and soothing. “You need to rest.”
I started to protest, but he pressed a finger gently to my lips, shaking his head. “No arguments,” he said softly. “Just close your eyes.”
He pulled a blanket over me, his hands lingering as he tucked it around my shoulders, and as my breathing slowed, I felt his fingers brush my cheek, tracing gentle patterns along my skin. The last thing I saw was him watching me, his expression filled with something I couldn’t quite place, a mix of worry, relief, and maybe… something else, something deeper.
“Sleep.” he whispered, his voice a barely audible murmur. “I’m not going anywhere.”
———————————————————————
The soft rise and fall of her breathing filled the room. Sylus sat beside her, one leg folded over the other, his arms crossed as he watched her sleep. In the dim light, she looked peaceful, a stark contrast to the worry that had been etched into her face earlier. He’d seen her like this before years ago.
He could still remember that night, when she’d slipped through his fingers.
He reached out almost instinctively, brushing his fingers against her cheek. She didn’t stir, but his touch softened, lingering there, feeling the warmth of her skin against his fingertips.
Unable to bear it, he slipped his arms around her, drawing her close, careful not to wake her. She was warm, her head resting against his chest, her body relaxed in his embrace. He pressed his cheek against her hair, letting himself take in her scent, the steady beat of her heart.
“You don’t get to do this to me again.” he whispered, his voice rough, barely audible even to himself. “Not this time. I won’t lose you. Not again.”

You are the only one in the world who can treat Sylus like this.
“[Name],” he calls for the nth time. “[Name].”
Sylus observes the furrow of your brow, the wobbly line of your lips. He notices the way your entire expression scrunches up, the way you visibly gasp when your gaze drifts over the most audacious line of the book you’re reading.
It’s endearing, really. The way your feelings dance across your face, oblivious to the crimson irises that do the same. Sylus notices all these things about you; he also notices how you don’t notice him, how your attention is fixated wholly on your book, how his adoring looks are bested by an inanimate object and how his terribly-obvious advances are shut down because of printed words on a paper.
Sylus hates losing. He hates being ignored. In fact, Sylus has never been ignored in his life—his sheer presence commands attention, his gaze alone being enough to silence a crowd. When it comes to you, however, his gaze is not enough.
Again, you are the only one in the world who can treat Sylus like this.
“[Name].” Sylus has had enough of losing. He reaches for the book and steals it from your hands.
“Sylus?” you reply, as if he hadn’t been there the entire time. “Since when did you arrive?”
Oh, he thinks. So, to you, he really hadn’t been there the entire time.
“Ten minutes ago,” he states coolly.
“Huh? Why didn’t you call me? Or tell me?”
“I did.”
“Really? Oh, sorry! That book was really getting crazy, I mean, like, the main character was—”
Sylus decides not to mention the part where he gave up. He had tried to get your attention, but somewhere along the way, he opted to sit in your presence instead, perceiving despite not being perceived.
In the silence, Sylus’s gaze trailed over your features, from the bridge of your nose to the curl of your lips. His red eyes tied knots around your expression, burning the image into his retinas, weaving the strings towards himself, from the base of your pinky to his. Sylus hates being ignored. He hates losing and he hates the idea of not being acknowledged.
When it comes to you, however, it’s different.
Everything is different.
“And then—oh, sorry. Am I boring you with the details?” you suddenly say, becoming bashful. Your pupils avert from his. Sylus is desperate to force them back on him, his brows furrowing ever-so slightly.
Quicker than he can think, he replies, “Not at all.”
You look at him. The tension laced into his expression eases.
“I almost forgot to ask,” you say, switching topics abruptly, “why are you here, Sylus?”
He chuckles at your bluntness. You are the only one in the world who can talk like that to him.
“I just wanted to see someone.”
Your eyes widen. Sylus relishes in the sight, unblinking, desperate and wild and oh, utterly miserable. To rely only on sight is a terrible fate, but again, you are the only one in the world who Sylus cannot catch. Your image slips in between his mind, falling through the intangibility of memory and vision. You cannot be contained—your unabashed and radiant spirit, your breathtaking and limitless beauty. You torture him! With thoughts of your existence, with thoughts of your real and incomparable being!
You—you exist!
(Sometimes, Sylus can’t believe it. And then he looks at you, and then himself, and he realizes that you are damn near divine. You are damn near intangible, an entity he worships, a concept he follows and offers himself towards. If you were to tell him to dismember himself now, Sylus thinks he would. If you were to ask him for his eyes, he’d tell you to hand him a knife. If you were to ask him for his heart, he’d tell you to take all four chambers.)
“You… you wanted to see me?”
Sylus smirks a little. “Did I say that?”
Your face erupts with embarrassment. “Hey! You… you!”
“Me,” he affirms.
(Look at you.)
Mirth flickers across the carmine expanse of his irises, the scarlet of his lips and the crimson within his veins. His pupils catch your for a moment before you look away, covering your expression with the palm of your hand. Sylus is used to people avoiding his gaze, to shying away from his presence out of sheer terror. He prefers it that way, really. It makes his job easier.
(Look at him.)
When it comes to you, however, it’s different. Sylus doesn’t want you avert your eyes from his—he wants to peer into your soul, to pick apart the temple with his own bloodied hands, to witness for himself the grandness of your presence, the impossibility of your existence.
(How could he ever believe you exist? When he is terrible and haunted, while you—oh, you—are utterly divine?)
Sylus wants you to perceive him. He wants you to pick him apart, too. To dismember him! To peel apart his skin and come to realize that everything, everything within himself—from the branches of his veins to the curl of his ribs—have only ever flowed back to his heart.
And you own that heart of his. That wretched, twisted little thing. You own it. And everything else that comes with it.
“You’re so…!”
“So?” Sylus encourages you to continue, tilting his head slightly. A smirk twists at his lips. He’s enjoying this far too much.
“Whatever!” You try to snatch the book back from his hands, your movements agile and befitting a hunter. Unfortunately for you, Sylus is used to playing things dirty, so he snaps the novel away with his Evol and calls it a day.
“Let’s go,” he says, standing up. “You like the arcade, right?”
You glare at him without saying a word.
You are the only one in the world who would ever make Sylus wait. Still, he obliges.
“You’re insufferable,” you mutter.
He hums. “And?”
“Disrespectful.”
Sylus’s cool expression remains unfazed. “I’ve never heard that one before.”
You snort. “Who would ever call you that?”
Only you, he thinks. For some reason, the thought doesn’t irritate him.
After all, you are the only one in the world who can treat Sylus like this.
(As a matter of fact, to Sylus, you are the only one in the world.)

the cat butler

word count: 2.4k
synopsis: in which sylus is eager to please you, as always. but this time, as a cat butler.
contains: sylus x mc!reader (they're not dating, but sylus is down bad), references to the cat butler trailer, sylus with cat ears and a tail, suggestive themes, mentions of alcohol, cussing, making out, and stalking(?).
a/n: i wrote this after reading somewhere that the upcoming memory might be our first-ever kiss with sylus. so consider this a prediction of some sort (probably not gonna happen). also, sylus' cat ears suit him so well. do not plagiarize or copy my work. sylus would not endorse plagiarism. enjoy!

“my lady,” a rich yet sultry voice calls. you shift uncomfortably in your sleep, wanting to rest a bit more.
“my lady,” the voice repeats firmly. still, you dismiss it by grumbling and refusing to open your eyes.
“my lady.” huh, that's weird. why does that voice sound like…
“my lady.” sylus?! you burst open your eyes upon recognizing who was calling you. though, not without a startled "oh, god" because sylus was mere inches from your face.
immediately, you sit up, rubbing your eyes and trying to process what was happening. where were you? how long were you out for? and most importantly, why was sylus calling you "my lady?" not that you had any problem with it, but still. your eyes widen as you find yourself on a velvet sofa in a sleek lounge of some sort. extending your arms in front of you, you stare dumbfoundedly at the tight leather gloves enveloping your hands. confusedly, you look down as you pat your body. a silky red, a-line dress hugged your figure, and you couldn’t help but admire the strings of shimmering pearls that hung around your waist and neck.
hoping for answers on how you got here and why you were dressed so nicely, you turn to look at sylus, who was kneeling on the ground next to the sofa to meet you at your eye level. you can’t stop the gasp that leaves your mouth. are those cat ears?!
nevermind the fact that sylus was dressed in a neat, scarlet tuxedo that matched the shade of your dress. nevermind the fact that he looked good in a tie—so good to the point you wanted to tug on it. nevermind the fact that he was wearing a clean pair of white gloves that outlined his fingers so nicely. what was with the cat ears?! and a tail, too?!
"uhm" you start. "what’s with the…?" you point at his head, hoping that he would understand. you couldn’t care less about formulating proper sentences. right now, you wanted answers. where were you? why were you dressed so nicely? why the fuck is sylus wearing cat ears and a tail? and why did the caracal set suit him so well?
sylus' crimson eyes move up cutely as if he was trying to see the ears for himself. then, they fall back down to you, but not without a chuckle. "they're cat ears, my lady," he answers teasingly. "isn't it obvious?" with that, the ears twitch excitedly. yup, you saw that right. they actually twitched.
"holy shit," you mutter as you reach to stroke the ears. "can i?"
sylus smirks as he gives you a single nod, closing his eyes to convey that you are more than welcome to touch him.
the ears felt incredibly real. the fur was super soft, and you could feel the skin vibrating beneath your fingers. your eyes widen as you pinch the ears gently. they didn't just feel real. they are real. the sheer warmth you felt from touching the exposed skin in the ears told you so. fascinated, you move your fingers to the back of one of the ears to scratch at the fur. sylus purrs and leans into your scratches. you can’t help but giggle at the sight. "who's the kitten now, sylus?" you jest, lifting your free hand to scratch his other ear, causing the man to part his mouth and rest his head against your knee. fuck, your touches felt so good.
wanting to get actual answers from him, you stop scratching and let your hands rest on your lap. before you can even speak, sylus hisses at the loss of your touch, his brows knitting and a scowl growing on his lips. he grabs both your hands and places them back on his ears. understanding his message, you continue your ministrations, trying to remember certain spots that cats tend to like.
"as much as these ears suit you," you coo. "this is really weird. want to tell me what's going on, sylus?" you don't remember him contacting you for a new mission where cat props and formal wear would be involved. heck, you don't remember how you even got here. what exactly was going on?
sylus sighs and raises his head back up before answering, "you purchased me, my lady." his amused gaze meets your bewildered one. “we signed a contract where i would be your cat butler as of today. perhaps you forgot because as soon as you signed the contract, you drank excessively from the bar over there," he juts his head towards the bar behind you. "then, you passed out."
what in the actual fuck? did he say purchase? what contract? you don’t remember signing any contracts. and since when did you ever drink? no, this can’t be right. you don't even recall coming to this fancy place. let alone dressing up so nicely.
"you're lying," you nervously say. "there's no one working at the bar, and i don't see any glasses either." for a moment, a look of pride flashes on sylus' face. you always were so observant. one of the many things he loved about you. if only you were more observant of his affection for you instead of being so oblivious all the time. "besides, what's with our outfits? i don't remember putting this on. let alone coming here..."
sylus laughs endearingly. his signature, billionaire laugh that constantly stirs up butterflies within you. "trust me, my lady, you drank," he insists, grasping your wrist and pressing a fond kiss. flustered by his actions, you try to pull back, but sylus' grasp remains strong. his sharp gaze locks with yours as he continues. "the dress code here is formal. thus, our attire. you walked in looking like this. a wonderful choice, i must say. you look ravishing, and i am honored to have been sold to you because..." sylus leans in next to your face, his hot breath fanning your sensitive ears. "i wouldn't have anyone else as my master."
you stand up immediately, uncontrollably blinking and blushing from what you just heard. unfortunately, you don’t realize that you are wearing heels, causing you to stumble backward. sylus swiftly stands up, pulling you to him with an arm around your waist, effectively and attractively saving you from your fall. you place both hands on his broad shoulders, trying to balance yourself and catch your breath. noticing that the two of you were basically conjoined by the groin, you avert your eyes away from him.
"t-thanks," you stammer as you try to get some space by pushing at his shoulders. "you can let go of me now."
sylus tilts his head, looking down at you mischievously and trying to meet your avoidant gaze. "is that a command, my lady?"
puzzled by his question, you finally meet his eyes. sylus sighs a hum of satisfaction, relishing in your eye contact with him. "what do you mean command?" you ask. you were too occupied by sylus’ accusations of you drinking to fully capture his previous answers.
"it's part of the contract you paid for. i am to obey your every command as your one and only cat butler." the man answers eagerly, as if what he had just said was completely normal. almost as if he was enjoying this.
you blink once. then twice before asking, "i paid for this?" you did not like where this was going.
"indeed, my lady. five million dollars to be exact. i am quite the expensive cat butler," sylus grins. normally, you would've found his grin cute. some fangs would peek out, and a slight dimple would show. moreover, he was wearing cat ears. which only added to his playful demeanor. but right now, you were mortified because FIVE MILLION DOLLARS?! WHERE DID YOU EVEN GET THAT MUCH MONEY?!
"what?!" you struggle against his embrace. "what do you mean five million dollars? not even a rare protocore is worth that much!" you panic as you think about your savings. did you seriously spend all your savings on a cat butler contract and put yourself into years’ worth of debt? oh god, if so, you were fucked. say goodbye to all your years of hard work and saving.
sylus frowns at your last statement. "are you not satisfied, my lady?"
with your jaw dropped, you look at the man towering over you as if he had said something, for lack of a better term, dumb. which he technically did because who would be satisfied after spending five million dollars on a cat butler contract?! (me). "yes?!” you say incredulously. “who in this situation would be satisfied?! you just told me that i blew all my savings and probably even more for a stupid contract!"
sylus sighs, pinching his nose bridge with his free hand. while it was one thing to have something related to him get called stupid, it was another to see you so rattled. he had to ease your mind, knowing it would spiral if he didn't act soon. "now, now my lady. there is nothing stupid about this contract. you'd be surprised by the numerous benefits that come with it. which are but not limited to me obeying your every command."
you don’t know which is worse. the head of onychinus telling you that you spent a sickening amount of money just to see him in a suit with cat features. or the head of onychinus telling you that you were actually benefiting from spending a sickening amount of money just to see him in a suit with cat features. as much as the idea of sylus following orders sounded like heaven, being broke in a matter of who knows how long, or in this case, little, and for a stupid reason at that, was not great. not great at all. your gaze shifts rapidly, distracted with coming up with a solution. "are there any refunds by chance?" you ask meekly.
a dangerous look passes over sylus’ crimson eyes. with no ill intent, of course. he could never harbor any feelings of malice towards you. but the idea of you wanting a refund bothered him greatly. he was not going to let you get rid of him so easily. his arm around your waist tightens, bringing you even closer to him. lifting his free hand, sylus curls a finger under your chin, tilting your face upwards to meet his burning gaze. you shiver, forced to drown in his deep pools of rubies. feeling a rush of pleasure from finally having your attention on him, sylus moves his hand from your chin and reaches behind you to caress the blade of your shoulder. you can't help but shudder at the sudden intimacy. why did this dress have to expose your back?
"even if my services were terrible," sylus doesn't cease his feather-like touches on your back, causing you to twitch and pant from sensitivity. "there are no refunds," he rasps as he traces a finger down your spine, prompting a whimper from you. enjoying the small yet addictive noises that leave your pretty lips, sylus smirks. yes, this was how it was supposed to be. you, in his embrace where only he could make you feel good and only he could hear your sweet, sweet sounds.
"sylus..." you try your best not to moan. "s-stop it." you hide your face in sylus' chest, wanting to muffle your sounds and smother your embarrassment away. "i-i got it. no refunds."
liking what he hears, sylus ceases his ministrations. he brings his hand back to your chin, gently pulling you away from his chest and slowly tilting your face so that you meet his gaze once more. "i'm glad you understand, my lady," sylus closes in on you, his lips millimeters apart from yours. "you won't be returning me anytime soon."
sylus smashes his lips against yours, earning a moan from you. with the hand that was on your chin now cupping your face and the arm that was around your waist tightening some more, the two of you fall back onto the velvet couch. you gasp at the impact, causing sylus to slide his tongue in, capturing your own in a heated dance that he seemed intent on leading. you shakily wrap your arms around sylus' neck, trying to keep up with his relentless kisses. out of the corner of your eye, you see sylus' tail desperately swaying left and right. an idea flashes in your head. as sylus continues to swirl his tongue in your mouth, you raise your hand from his neck and gently tug at one of his cat ears. sylus jerks violently, mewling filthily into your mouth. taking that as a sign of encouragement, you continue playing with his ear, causing him to lose himself more and more in your lips, your scent, your everything.
when the two of you grow in need of breaths, sylus pulls away, panting the same rhythm as you. you had no idea how gorgeous you looked right now. splayed out underneath him in tempting attire that was of his signature color. hair disheveled, cheeks rosy, lips swollen, eyes teary—god, you were going to be the death of him. tenderly moving a stray hair out of your face, the silver-haired man speaks.
"so, what is your first command, my lady?"

extra:
you inhale sharply as you jolt out of bed. what the fuck was that? you breathe rapidly as you take in your surroundings. sighing a breath of relief, you find yourself back in your room and your comfy pajamas. tiredly rubbing a hand over your face, you start to agonize over the fact that you dreamt about making out with sylus. not only that, you dreamt about making out with him in cat ears. why? you're not sure what this says about you as a person, let alone your growing attraction to him. did you have a thing for pet pla—you don't let yourself finish that last thought. ruffling your hair in frustration, you fall back onto your pillow, determined to recover from that dream. you decide that you are going to avoid sylus for a few days.
shifting into a comfortable position, you shut your eyes and wait for sleep to find you, causing you to miss the mechanical crow with glowing red eyes flying away from your window and into the night. sylus, viewing the surveillance screen back at his grand residence, tilts his head in curiosity, a subtle smirk appearing on his lips.
"what did you dream about, kitten?"
