Alright. I watched Elio. Time to be mad.
⚠️ Rant. There are no spoilers about the movie. I don't even talk about the plot.
This movie was pretty good! Was it the greatest of all time? No, and it shouldn't have to be. ... Should it have still gotten a LITTLE more attention? Yeah. Me, my little brothers, and my roommate were the only ones that were in the theater room. Let me be clear; I'm not mad at the movie or the team who animated it.
I'm mad at the marketing team.
I barely saw ads for this movie, like at all. I got one ad a couple times spaced out a couple of months while I was watching YouTube, and I haven't exactly had the time to be on YouTube the last couple of months. It played once before a different movie I saw in theaters. I watched the ad for Topo Chico - a sparkling water product - 5x more than Elio's, and that was only last night when I was having trouble sleeping. I saw the Elemental ad more before that movie came out, and people were talking about how rarely they saw ads for it.
I'm also mad at the "critics" on Twitter.

These screenshots were all taken under a Schaffrillas post made today, but I've seen this argument against the art style all over the place; Instagram comments, Youtube comments, TikTok comments, etc.
I'm so sick of the discourse of the "bean mouth." Who cares? It is not the art style's fault if a movie is bad. Actually, if I was going to think the art style dictated how good a movie was, I would think that the movies were going to be the best! We've had Turning Red and Luca, both of which looked incredibly similar, and the former having a hate campaign against it before it was even released because of said art style. Then it turned out to be a good, fun movie.
If the art style dictated how good a movie is, then "live action" remakes would not exist, because they're near-universally disliked. They look ugly, and the ones where actors have to interact with the CGI recreation look especially bad, but they keep making Disney money.
So many people have this stupid ass beef with an art style, so they refuse to go see the movie until critics say, "Oh, it's good, go watch it." They always blame the art style for why a movie isn't getting watched, when it's blatantly obvious that Disney has been steering away from original stories to make room for their god awful remakes that don't need to exist. It has nothing to do with the art style; it has to do with what Disney sees is making them money.
The Snow White and Seven Dwarfs remake was so bad that it made them stutter, but now Lilo and Stitch are making them money, so they won't hesitate to make another one. I can already imagine the Tangled remake being put back on production.
I'm not saying anything new. I'm reiterating what I've heard others say and what I can see with my eyes.
I will say I really enjoy the bean mouth look; it's cute and very expressive. I loved the additional sparkles they gave Turning Red characters and the exaggerated animation of both that, Luca, and Win or Lose. They had a lot of fun with the gooey portions of Elio, too. I would much rather see the fun animation of the movies with this animation style than the "realistic" CGI slop.
People's beef should be on the writing that Disney is putting out, not the art style. While I do think The Lion King (2019) looked bad, that's not why people think it's a bad movie; it was bad because it took away the best parts of the original Lion King and replaced them with mediocre slop. Scar wasn't how he was portrayed to be in the original - hell, I'm not even gonna try with this. There are plenty of people who can describe why the movie was bad in much better wording. Either way, the original is better in every way, especially in how it looks.
This is not me shilling out to Disney. I know they're a corporation, and I know they have terrible ethics. This is me talking about a movie that happens to be made by Disney that I thought was good, and me ranting about people's terrible excuses for why a movie didn't make a lot of money.
(Also, how does this art style STILL remind people of those Grubhub ads from like 2020? They haven't been played in years, and we've had universally watched movies that use a barely similar art style for a much better viewing experience.)
Idk if this made any sense. I'm tired, and I don't really wanna read back over this. I just felt like ranting about something. Go watch the movie, or make some time in the future to watch it. Byeee
