World's First Floating City On Course To Be Built In French Polynesia

The probability of Ocean levels continuing to rise has led the French Polynesian Government to try and explore a rather radical solution – to assemble the world’s first floating city and move its citizens into it. Rising Ocean levels have always posed a dangerous threat to the 118 Islands that form French Polynesia. To proffer a solution, the Government of French Plolynesia has utilised the professional services of The Seasteading Institute, a Firm renowned for floating city concepts, with an agreement being signed January 2017 to proffer a remedy. And what a daring remedy! The Seasteading Institute, a co-brainchild of Trump Supporter, Peter Thiel, has spent the last five years working out how to build “permanent, innovative communities floating at sea.” The agreement signed comes with two specifics – the project must benefit local economy and must not in any way disturb the environment. More Reads: Dallas Floodplains to become Home to America’s biggest Nature Park "We are planning to spin off a new industry of floating islands that will allow people to stay tethered to their sovereignty as opposed to having to flee to other countries," said Randolph Hencken, Executive Ditector, Seasteading Institute. The first floating city plan, as explained by him would see locals, like Tahitians (The largest in the group of Islands) not needing to flee sinking homes in the coming future, while also uplifting the tourism Industry, the mainstay of the economy. "That's certainly why the Tahitians are interested in us. They want the environmental resiliency as well as the economic opportunities." MIT researchers discovers lightweight material made with Graphene and 10 times stronger than steel

A material, made from Graphene, which 10 times more powerful than Steel has been produced by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT. Graphene is a thin layer of tightly packed pure carbon atoms. Flecks of it squished and bonded together in a cobweb-like looking hexagonal shape has resulted into one of the strongest substance known on earth Graphene has always been thought of to be the strongest of all known materials. The issue however, was that Researchers have always had a difficulty converting its two-dimensional strength into useful three-dimensional material. Experiments conducted on 3D printed models have however empowered researchers to conclude that this new material, with its distinct geometry, is actually more powerful than graphene – and is, in fact, 10 times stronger than steel. According to the Researchers, the strength of the stronger than steel material comes from its massive surface-area-to-volume ratio. "Once we created these 3D structures, we wanted to see what's the limit — what's the strongest possible material we can produce," said Research co-author Zhao Qin of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Related: A Flying Motorcycle! Well…That’s The New Idea BMW and Lego Just Cooked up The Research also implies that other quite solid lightweight materials could be produced from materials with similar geometric pattern. This suggests that in the nearest future, lightweight but amazingly strong Bridges, Skyscrapers etc might be assembled applying this stronger than steel material. This would be possible because air-pockets made possible by the hexagonal shape of the material would insulate against heat and cold. Click to Post

A Flying Motorcycle! Well...That’s The New Idea BMW and Lego Just Cooked up

From ages past, human beings have always been fascinated with the concept of flying machines. This development, of course, culminated in the invention of the Airplane. Others have similarly toyed with the concept of flying Cars, boats, etc. But no one certainly has ever toyed with the notion of a flying bike. But that’s just what BMW and Lego appear to be doing. Everything started out as a collaborative attempt by Motorrad, the German Auto Giant’s Motorcycle division and Lego Technic’s Team to create an adventure Kit. The second concept in the kit, the LEGO Technic R 1200 GS, was that of a futuristic flying bike which has now been developed into a full scale concept vehicle known as the BMW's R1200GS 'hover' bike. ” What would happen if we designed a bike together? What would happen if we removed all limits for the alternative model? ” said Senior Design Manager for LEGO Technic , Andy Woodman ” So we set the BMW Motorrad and LEGO Technic design teams a challenge, a challenge that has resulted in this amazing bike. Collaboration between our two teams was driven by passion and respect for the DNA of each other’s brands. It was fantastic to see how engaged and inspired each team was by working together, but I don’t think either of us ever imagined that this project would turn out as it did. I guess it just proves that you can create anything with LEGO Technic. Even the future”. Related: World’s Most Powerful Electric Bike Released By Moar BMW and LEGO have been bringing designers from both companies together to create jobs which ensure that the management trainees at the BMW training unit develop multidisciplinary abilities.
