On the way back home, I had some time to kill in Amsterdam's Schipol Airport, and I found something awesome from my childhood. When I was ~10 or 11, a movie theater in Buffalo Grove, IL had this awesome flight simulator arcade game. At some point, they got rid of it and I scoured the internet, trying to find where it went. Finally, 10 years later, I found it (or another unit) in Amsterdam!

After Rotterdam, I took a train into Amsterdam. I primarily stuck to the standard cliches of Amsterdam (i.e. the Anne Frank House) and had dinner at the ever-hyped “Kantjil & De Tijger”.

According to the Head of Product Exposure, who gave me a personal tour, I’m the only person who’s ever asked for a tour of the factory. Regardless, she took me around the factory, showed me products being tested for different markets, and gave me a ton of free swag!

DeKuyper
DeKuyper is a Dutch distillery dating back to 1695. Since then, it has exported its product to places such as Champaign, IL. As a proudly-licensed bartender, and a guy who’s pretty good at making a quick buck, I learned that I was able to use DeKuyper’s economical products in higher-end drinks. As such, I wanted to pay homage to the company that funded many a Champaign pizza!

Why Rotterdam?
It’s a valid question. Don’t all Americans go to Amsterdam?? Well, that happened later--but I did have a good reason for going to Rotterdam. Just west of Rotterdam is the small Dutch distillery-haven of Schiedam. Formerly home to over 100 separate distilleries, it is now home to only 4--one of which I have something of a history with.

I spent my first 2 nights in Rotterdam. While there, found this boat lazily basking in the sun, and I thought its name seemed fitting.

Off again
Once I was finished doing laundry, I was back at the airport--this time to the Netherlands!

After Munich, I came back to Vienna to do laundry, and found this gem of a store on the way for groceries.

I spent the first weekend of my Easter Break in Munich! Lovely city, but I didn’t think much about taking pictures. Two of pictures I did manage to snap were of the the Allianz Arena (Munich Soccer Stadium) and “King Butt” (a random schwarma place near my AirBnB.

Because I’m a nerd, I tracked her flight and listened to the live Air Traffic Control feed as she approached Chicago.

While we may look chipper and lively, this was when we arrived at the airport at 5:45am. Note: we had to wake up at 4:30am, walk 20 minutes in the dark/cold to the train station, and stay awake long enough so we didn’t sleep through our stop. From there, Miriam was off to Zurich for a short layover, then back to Chicago.

Sundays in Vienna are slightly quieter, as most stores close. We were still able to take a picture in front of the Karl Marx-Hof.

On Day 2, we visited Schloss Schönbrunn (the Imperial Summer Residence). Some pictures were more coordinated than others...

Later that night, we went to see a performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Karlskirche. It was a bit cold (they gave everyone blankets) but the church was beautiful.

On the first day, despite some jetlag, we visited the UN here in Vienna. I think the captioned quote sums up her attitude about the experience.
