I’ve followed and loved Manuel Neuer for 15 years.
Yesterday, sitting there and watching him from a distance, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Supporting him isn’t just a choice — it feels like part of my DNA.
My seat was near the goal area, so I could clearly see his pain, helplessness, and loneliness on the pitch. He made several excellent saves. Even the Benfica fans in front of me cursed him once. I saw everything: the way he tried to stay close to his teammates, how he ran into the opponent’s box in one last effort, how he carried water bottles to help his teammates rehydrate, and how he lowered his head in disappointment.
He did everything he could — and it still wasn’t enough.
What I felt yesterday wasn’t just sadness over a loss. It was something deeper — a mix of pride in how strong Manu still is, and pain seeing the disappointment and loneliness on his face… especially with him standing right there in front of me.

I remember this pic. You will have a similar smile if you touch Manu's butt like that.

In the newly released interview clip, Thomas mentioned that he’s thankful his teammates mimicked the pose he struck as a kid—it was a meaningful gift.
Now I wonder if he wore a goalkeeper shirt to say thank you to Manu: You mimicked me, and now I’m mimicking you.

In case you haven’t seen Manu wore Thomas’s shirt.
I just feel curious about what happened during these days between Manu and Thomas.
Last week, Manu and Thomas looked terribly sad. Their embrace was nothing but sorrow.
Then after a short vacation and spa, Thomas had a hoarse sound and Manu looked freshly recharged. Both of them looked energetic yesterday and even shared a happy hug.
Then after a shower, Thomas even wore a Manu’s jersey?
What did they do during these days? I need an answer!
You and me both, my friend! You raise a great point; I feel like even though we’ve caught so many glimpses into their relationship this past week or so, there’s so much more that we probably didn’t see—so many whispered conversations and stolen touches in private hallways that the cameras didn’t catch. And I think a part of me likes to believe that’s where the magic happens 😊
But then there’s the things we do see. Like the hug from Thomas’ last home match you mentioned. To say it was emotional feels like a gross understatement, doesn’t it? Like a disservice. It was so much more than that—so much more weighted than the word “emotional” allows for. I saw that sorrow too—that realization that they were on borrowed time—that this was one of the last times they’d ever get to share a hug on the pitch as players.
But I also saw a pride and gratitude packaged in that embrace. Manu’s pride—for the incredible player he got to share a stage with—the Bayern fan he watched evolve into a legend. For the man Thomas is and the myth he became. And then there’s the gratitude—a shared giving thanks for the relationship they’ve forged through years of blood, sweat, and tears. I felt this most strongly on Thomas’ part, in that kiss he planted on Manu’s cheek, but it was clear Manu felt it too; you could see it in the way he closed his eyes when Thomas kissed him and all through their hug, completely content. Perhaps there was even a bit of reverence in it too—a mutual admiration for what they’ve both accomplished as players and as people.

And clearly the emotions of that day took their toll, because Thomas decided that a brief holiday in Ibiza afterwards was not enough—that the squad (him and Manu especially I’m sure; it’s hard work coparenting so many meddling kids) needed a spa day. I love what you said about them seeming completely reenergized, because I noticed it too! And Thomas’ hoarse voice definitely makes me wonder what they got up to in Ibiza and on that spa trip; I have my own ideas about that 😏
Whatever the reason though, there was a different energy to their hug in Thomas’ last Bundesliga match vs. Hoffenheim. If the one during Thomas’ last home game vs. Gladbach was a mourning of sorts—a slightly somber meditation on what they’ve achieved and experienced together and a realization that soon enough, they’d have to say goodbye to the very thing that brought them together: Bayern, the Bundesliga, and football as a whole perhaps, then this hug was a celebration. A mutual recognition that even though they’d have to say farewell to one facet of their relationship, they wouldn’t be losing each other in the process. There was a joy in it, in knowing that they’d achieved the remarkable, not just once, but several times over, together. That undercurrent of gratitude was still there too; it never left really. After all, maybe they were the lucky ones to have something so special. Something that makes a goodbye feel like a funeral—something so loving, tender, and pure—something worth mourning.

And then there was yet another golden chapter in the Neuller story: Thomas showing up to his post-match presser freshly showered and donning a Manuel Neuer jersey. Was it the Manu jersey? Probably not, but I like to believe the sentiment alone speaks volumes about their relationship. I mean, let’s all stop and think about the lore implications for a minute: Thomas wore a Manu shirt. A Manu shirt that might’ve had “Neuer” on the back (on that note, does anyone know if the shirt Thomas was wearing had the Neuer nameset? For veryyy obvious reasons I’m extremely curious lol). That’s some “when we get married, I’ll take your last name” type shit.
I like to think it was also Thomas’ way of confirming what we all knew to be true—how grateful he is to have Manu in his life and how appreciative he is of the bond they have. It was an acknowledgement that if football is a team sport the way we all know it to be, then Manu will always have a place in his ❤️
