I'd add WaniKani for Japanese Kanji learning specifically. It's free for the first few levels (which takes a while to master) and then it's paid, but it is very good at teaching the meanings of Kanji.

Exactly! As a former dishwasher who ended up washing dishes until 1am one night in July because we were a town full of people's "summer homes", I can tell you it can be gross and the work is hard, but it is necessary and you should pay them MORE.

When the health food store unionized, something wild happened that I thought was just a goofy one-off, but makes more sense now.

There was a big push to eliminate "degrading jobs" but the strategy was to eliminate the position, then create a new position outside of the bargaining unit to do the work. So like, we wouldn't have dishwashers, but we'd have people who washed dishes that weren't eligible to be in the union.

I was like A) what the actual fuck? Dish washing isn't "degrading", it's fucking vital. B) What the actual fuck? You want to create a union just to exploit different people?

There were enough of us to be like "Absolutely the fuck not," and put a stop to it, but I was absolutely flummoxed that people involved in a union would say that out loud. Working with more leftists now, it makes sense.

Many of us are. My senior lead is always informing me of where donuts are on our floor. My regular lead showed me a new candy bowl that he found on the other side of the building today, the people two aisles over bake something nearly every week. Are we getting shit done? Not as much as we were before they mandated us in office 5 days a week.

My favorite thing to do now that they're forcing people back into the office is to go around the building looking for free food

There was a fresh air interview with Dan Aykroyd where he was saying that before he was on SNL, he would go around and sing at clubs. If there was a band that didn't have a singer, he'd join and sorta teach them how to play the accompaniment he was looking for. Also, from that episode, Howard Shore (the LotR composer) gave them the name "The Blues Brothers" while a bunch of them were hanging out in a bar in Ontario.

This was really cool to learn and reminded me of restaurants back in the 90s that would have a band or piano player in them and that combined with this post made me realize: while traveling bards feel like they're from a long time ago, we've only been without them for about 30 years. And who knows, maybe there are still folks doing this, but it's just not where I am.

I'd love to go to a restaurant or a bar and listen to a band playing again. It's been way too long.
