sometimes, hanzo’s dragons really came in handy. when he was on the battlefield, fighting for his life, and they came out to assist him, he could never be more thankful for them. but sometimes... sometimes, they behaved like troublesome cats. and evidently, right now was one of those times. only since his arrival at hiraeth academy had they started appearing outside of battle, laying on his shoulders or hovering around him. he hadn’t even named them. they were powerful and intimidating spirit dragons, for christ’s sake, that live solely due to the shimada blood in hanzo’s veins. not little pets that he should have to dote over. yet, he still found himself searching the dormitory hall for the critters as if they were his babies.
he’d spent the majority of the past hour searching for them and has only managed to find one of the twins, while the usual perpetrator caused him quite a bit more trouble. the first one was attempting to sneak its way into a closed-off room, so he could only assume the other one would already have hidden itself somewhere. at least they couldn’t manage elevators, so they’d have to be somewhere on this floor of the dormitories.
with one dragon situated on his shoulder about to take a nap, and a sigh coming from his own lips, he figured he’d best start knocking on doors to find the other. and dorm one hundred seemed as good of a place to start as any.
after shooting a glare to the spirit resting on his shoulder, hanzo knocked on the door.

there was always something about a new year, new roommates, new classes -- new things in general, really -- that stressed hanzo. while he had intended to sign up for a single dorm, he must have forgotten, because there sure was someone else in his dormitory when he got there for the first time. and last time he checked, single dorms were for one person and one person alone.
he should have figured, considering the dorm he was assigned to seemed to share number patterns with all the other joint rooms, but he had held out hope. what a mistake for him of all people to make.
“you are... in my dormitory.” there was an ounce of confusion to his voice, still holding out that tiny bit of hope that maybe this guy was just a young-looking janitor cleaning up the room before he moved in.

any time hanzo could get some sparring in was a good time for him; he is a perfectionist, aiming to make himself the absolute best he can possibly be. he was groomed that way, after all, and it had become his responsibility a simple habit to keep up with it. although he was no longer the heir to a syndicate, he certainly enjoyed being the best he could be. and hell, the fighting skills came in pretty handy when they needed to.
of course, there was an issue: many other people in the academy aiming to spar were significantly younger than him. young enough to the point where he almost felt bad about fighting with them, even if they both agreed to it. though, pickings were slim, and he felt like he wouldn’t be finding someone his age for quite some time. if he wanted to get in some fighting practice, he’d have to suck it up.
after classes, hanzo would occasionally find himself in the gymnasium for combat training. when it wasn’t booked by a club or a teacher, it was sometimes a nice place to find someone to spar with. and it seemed this visit, he was lucky. as he looked around, a person with... very notable features caught his attention. perhaps it was the multi-colored hair that captured his eye, perhaps it was the scar on his face -- either way, he could tell just from looking at this kid that he wouldn’t necessarily be a cakewalk, if he’d want to fight.
“you,” he called, stepping toward the other. it was pretty rare for the archer to initiate conversation, but he knew he wouldn’t get anywhere if he didn’t here. “care to spar?” the tone of his voice was an odd mix of serious and cocky, and his question wasted no time. he may as well be direct, after all.

Hearing his teammate call for them, Noctis moved away from his spot, glad for a reason to stop digging. He sighed heavily, footsteps landing heavily as he moved closer to where his teammates had gathered, although he quickly found himself halting in the process and standing further away. The smell that had erupted from the hole in the wall was positively disgusting, not unlike the variety of overly pungent cheeses he would find served at some of the royal banquets back home.
That is, back when he had a home to return to that wasn’t overrun by traitors and daemons.
Covering his nose with the palm of his hand, Noctis’ face scrunched up almost childishly in the face of such a strong smell. He felt queasy and uncomfortable. He was already an extremely picky eater, and this cheese was only serving to mark cheese off of his list of edible substances… forever. He doubted Ignis would be pleased to hear that, but… Ignis had not faced the Cheese Room of Despair.
“I think…” Noctis paused, angling his face away in an attempt to grasp a breath of clean air before turning back to his team, “…I think that’s the only thing we can do. Shit that reeks… let’s get through it quickly, hopefully there’s a way out…”
@ryoumen
kurama gave a nod to izuminokami as thanks for supporting him, before he looked back and forth between his teammates before staring back at the wall of cheese once again. they were so close, he practically could taste it! (it being the freedom, of course, not the cheese.) at their suggestion of powering through the wall, he nodded, taking a deep breath of as clean of air as he could get from through his sleeve. he held his breath and his knuckles whitened at how hard he was gripping the shovel in his hands.
he knew he had to give this all he had if he wanted to get through it quickly, as he isn’t necessarily the most muscular guy in the world.
“hyah --” he couldn’t help but let out the breath he had been holding as he practically threw the shovel forwards, the blade of it getting deep into the cheese. it wasn’t enough, though -- one more. enduring the smell, he once again threw the shovel forward (this time making more of a strained noise), and felt... no resistance, past a certain point.
kurama would angle the shovel so that the cheese would break and he could get it out of their way. and to his surprise, it was... open on the other side? albeit, open into a new part of the maze, but it was out of this damned room. he shoved away more parts of the cheese, enough to allow the three to go through it one at a time, and stood up straight before looking at his teammates, noctis in particular, as he was the leader.
“we’re through. let’s go!”

Noctis was a picky eater. He doesn’t necessarily have anything against cheese, but he had to agree with his teammate on that statement. He too, never wanted to see any sort of cheese again after this incident. He’d have to make sure to let Ignis know, if they ever made it back home… cheese would be another new restriction. If there was any comfort to be had in this room, it’s that it wasn’t made of vegetables, at least.
He might have given up immediately, had it been vegetables.
He glanced over to make sure the other two were working before setting to work on his own wall. Noctis wasn’t exactly talkative to begin with, and so he worked in silence as he scraped away with his hands. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling to have cheese under his nails, but it was what had to be done to escape the cheesy tomb. Noctis definitely didn’t want to be remembered as the king who died in a room full of cheese - because seriously, how much lamer could you get?
“…Any luck over there, Kurama? Izuminokami?” Noctis called after a little while, hands digging a sizeable hole in the wall. He was working more across than depth wise, wanting to get a good picture of what the wall might look like as a whole, considering there was a lot of space to cover if they were trying to dig their way out. “I think… I might be getting close to something in one spot but…”
@ryoumen
all kurama wanted was to get out of this room at this point. the smell of cheese (it’s not very strong with most cheeses, but being trapped in a room with nothing but teenage boys and cheese was... a way to make some odd smells.) he did not truly talk much to his teammates as he dug -- thankfully for them, the walls were not too thick. so with just a few times burying the shovel into the cheese, he had gotten to what appeared to be the end: the wall.
“noctis, izuminokami, over here. i’ve got something.” he would call for his team to show the progress that he had made with his shovel. taking a step back, the sudden smell hit him as if it were a truck -- it was awful. limburger cheese combined with stressed teenage boys didn’t make for an enjoyable smell. the demon coughed into his arm, stumbling back some more, though he still needed to show his progress to the others. “i, uh -- i think i got to the end.”

“That’s… actually not a terrible idea.” Noctis said, hearing Izuminokami’s joke. While he recognized it as an attempt at humour, it seemed as though digging - or eating - through the cheese was their only option at moving forward. Noctis glanced at both of his teammates before taking a step further into the room, pointing at the wall opposite where they came in from.
He kind of wished Ignis was here, since he wasn’t exactly the best with this ‘strategic planning’ sort of situation. But he’d just have to do his best, especially as team leader.
“We can take turns digging out the cheese on each of the walls. Kurama… you take this wall and dig with your shovel. We’ll be able to see how deep this cheese is, and if it isn’t too far back… Izuminokami and I can take the other two walls and dig with our hands.” Noctis instructed, channeling his inner ‘King’s Adviser’, which seemed to work scarily well. He glanced at his weapon, noting that it wouldn’t be able to help with this challenge at all. Neither would Izuminokami’s blanket, unless they needed to take a break and didn’t want to sit on the actual cheese.
At least they couldn’t starve in here.
“It’s not ideal… but we’ll have to make it work for now. Unless you guys… want to die in a cheese room?”
| | @ryoumen
“you guys can’t be serious, right?” kurama was still in shock at the sheer amount of cheese -- so much dairy had gone to waste just to make this sick joke of a room! and now, his teammates were discussing how deep the cheese was and such. it was bizarre. “neither of you would’ve happened to have smuggled a lighter in here, did you?” not that he truly needed it, it’d just make his life a lot easier.
still, he shrugged, tightly getting a hold on his shovel. he followed his team leader into the room and looked to the wall he had pointed at, sighing. “i guess that’s probably our best bet, no?”
“how long do you think it’ll take?” he didn’t want to be in the room very long, as it was made entirely out of cheese. even if kurama wasn’t lactose intolerant or anything of the sort, he still didn’t want to be stuck in a room made of it until he perished. he’d nearly died multiple times before, and he didn’t exactly want it to happen again. especially if it wasn’t in a genuinely dangerous situation, which a cheese room didn’t necessarily seem to be. “we should get out of here as soon as possible.” as he said that, the fox made his way to the opposite wall and began shoveling, intending to speed his way through the wall and (hopefully) to the door so they could return to the academy.

All things considered, his team wasn’t half-bad. They couldn’t hold a candle to the group of friends Noctis was used to traveling with, but when stuck in a darkened maze like this, they were decent company. While Noctis was only stuck with a plastic fish, Kurama - one of his teammates - was given a shovel, which could no doubt do some damage if he was able to wield it properly. Meanwhile Izuminokami… well, at least they likely wouldn’t be cold at any point during their journey, with his blanket.
If he was being honest, Noctis dreaded their first encounter. But as he jogged ahead of his group, falling naturally into the role of leader, the prince slowed down as they approached a door at the end of the hall. Something inside of him told him that this was where they were meant to be, almost like a gut instinct. Besides, there was no other way to go, besides back where they had come from. Noctis spared a silent glance to his companions before opening the door confidently, only to gasp out loud in surprise when he saw the interior.
Cheese.
Wall to wall, nothing but cheese could be seen. There was no other sign of a door, an exit to this nightmare. Glancing towards his teammates, Noctis swallowed thickly, stomach churning at the thought of having to escape this cheese tomb.
“It’s… a room made of cheese.” Noctis concluded finally, looking exasperated as he sighed deeply. He had been prepared to fight monsters, not… dig his way out of a cheese room.
( a cheesy start, with @ryoumen & @practicalandpretty )
kurama wasn’t used to being without powers -- a demon in the spirit world to begin with, then he became a demonic, plant-manipulating ally of a man in the human world... and then hiraeth academy. he’d always been highly powerful, and now he was all on his own with a shovel and two other guys. sure, he wasn’t all alone then if he had teammates, but he felt like he wasn’t himself if he didn’t have his powers. and to add onto that, he had never used a shovel as a weapon before.
he wasn’t scared, to be exact; yes, it was new and he was not able to use his abilities, but he didn’t doubt that he and his teammates could manage fairly well. at least in the first few challenges, that was. luckily, noctis seemed to be used to taking charge. kurama could do that fairly well, but he certainly preferred being more of a person who stands back somewhat and attacks from afar. and izuminokami at least seemed like he was capable of fighting when they would need to.
they hadn’t spoken much to one another since they were transported to the maze, as none of them were really friends before any of this had happened. it was better for them if they didn’t get too attached to one another, at least in kurama’s mind, as he knew not all of them were guaranteed to survive. their leader had still taken charge, despite not knowing if the other two were okay with it. he had rushed to a door that they went towards, despite them being somewhat nervous. nonetheless, he opened it with his head held high, but it very clearly changed when the three could see the inside of the room.
the fox’s shoulders drooped as he looked in, grip on his shovel lightening. “that is... so much cheese.”

@ryoumen
The landscape was certainly alien. Familiar, but not at the same time. But that wasn’t going to stop her from examining the plant life she found. After all, she needed to study them and their properties, how they grew and what they needed if she was going to be using them in her classes. Besides, variety was a good thing, right? Even if it wasn’t what she was used to, it was still important that she learned what had similar properties to the plants back home.
That did not, however, stop her from trying to cultivate plants from home. It was for that reason that she was currently hunched over on the campus grounds, hands out stretched and legs crossed underneath her. She furrowed her brows, focusing on the patch of grass in front of her, willing even a single leaf to poke through the earth.
But she hadn’t had any results yet, which was starting to get her frustrated, so she focused more of her magic than she needed to, despite Alister’s warning. Next thing she knew, there was a woosh of air around her and suddenly she was surrounded by a rather large rose bush, resulting in her jolting upright with a loud yelp as one of the thorns poked her in the back.
She could hear Alister snickering as he snuck his way through the roots, but her ways out were blocked by thorns. “A wall of roses. I’d be happier if I wasn’t trapped..” she grumbled to herself.
“U-um…is anyone out there?” she called, rising on her tiptoes to try and peer over the rose bushes. “I need a little help…” After a mistake like that, she definitely wasn’t going to try and use her magic to get free…at this rate, she’d likely make it worse.
kurama was definitely used to seeing all different sorts of plantlife from both the human world and the spirit world. and oftentimes, that would include malicious plants (albeit, they would be attacking his own enemies for him, but they were still harmful). what he was not used to, though, were plants suddenly rising out of the ground to trap a fellow student of his while he was sitting outside and looking at the surrounding nature. even if they were on some sort of alien planet, it still seemed odd, to say the least. as far as he was aware, plants didn’t just go out of their way to trap innocent people, which led him to make some assumptions about this girl who he saw get trapped.
whether it was because she secretly is evil and against the plants, or commands them herself, he was uncertain. all that he was sure of was that she seemed to need help -- that, he could gather from her very clearly calling for help.
“i’m coming, i’m coming.” he’d call in return as he stood up, hoping that he’d be able to control these particular plants, “how did you manage to get stuck in here?”
he chuckled a little bit as he rose a hand up to grip a leaf of one of the bushes before commanding it back into the ground. the demon shook his head at the girl as he came to be able to see her. “you sure are lucky i came along, aren’t you?”

though there was plenty of investigating the fox could be doing inside of the school itself, he decided to take a loot at the library and see what it was all about. it was just as it had been made out to be: astonishing, having any book that one could ever want or need. and of course, it was relaxing -- different from the hectic building that was the academy. sure, the library did have some interesting aspects to it: the crystals, the floating platforms. it definitely wasn’t a regular library. but it had a bit of a calming air to it, at least when compared to the always shifting school.
kurama lingered on the ground floor, looking at books that were already within his reach. there wasn’t exactly anything catching his eye, though. there were a few interesting books that stood out a little, but nothing enough to make him want them. sidestepping over to a smaller looking purple-haired girl who also seemed to be looking for a book, he leaned down to prevent himself from being loud.
“do you have any recommendations?”

someone completely inexperienced with the realm of music, someone completely inexperienced with the idea of being popular, perhaps even famous -- that’s how kurama could describe himself when it came to knowledge about idols. sure, he was relatively well-known in the spirit world, but infamy is a completely separate thing from regular fame, at least in his mind. and he sure was no singer.
but each and every time he’d be out in the halls during class and he’d stroll past the spellsinging classroom, his ears would be graced with the voices of those students inside: the idols, mostly. the people who had previously been famous for their singing, and who were given the ability to use that as a power when pulled into hiraeth academy. they had been given their skills for a reason, after all, so there was no reason for him to be shocked.
what truly had shocked him, though, was the sheer lack of girls in that class. any time he’d see the students pour out of the door into the halls, there would only be a girl or two in the sea of boys. part of that made him curious, curious as to why there weren’t many females. he perched himself outside of the spellsinging class and decided to ask someone about how the class went when they walked outside.
and how appropriate that the first person he’d notice would be a girl, a bit of a cute one at that. as she walked out of the door, he reached out to tap on her arm to get her attention.
“would i be able to ask you some questions?” a kind smile rested on his face, being sure to look as far from hostile as possible. that wasn’t his intent, after all.

having only been in hiraeth for a day thus far, there was plenty there that the fox didn’t understand: the layout of the school, some of his fellow students, hell, even the school itself. it never looked the same and that made kurama a tad nervous -- he prides himself in his ability to make plans and act in the most ideal way possible, but it was rather hard to come up with logical tactics when he couldn’t even understand the very ground he stood on.
and of course, being the new kid, the demonic boy would be the sort to get himself a bit lost in the school during an exploration mission. the oh-so-tactical fox himself had forgotten his map that was provided to him in his dorm room, and hadn’t realized until he was completely lost. a glance around hadn’t helped at all, considering the path he had originally taken had completely warped into something new, now. luckily enough for him, though, he spotted another student: perhaps a soul as curious as his own? advancing, the redhead called out to the brunette.
“hey -- ! you wouldn’t happen to know the way up to the dormitories, would you?”

yo sup i’m late with my intro but hi, it’s cas here! i’m a big dumb loser and this is my fourth muse i’ve had in hiraeth albeit i only have three muses right now -- and kurama’s one of my favorite characters in the whole wide world! here are some lil basics about this boyo:
classes:
one; charms. two; coercion. three; tactics and strategy. four; defensive studies. five; stealth and camouflage. six; demonology.
he is a member of the art club!
he’s a bit of a loner but he has a heart of gold, for those who get close enough to him. he is also quite the smart kiddo, and is immensely tactical when it comes to combat.
and now, feel free to like this for a starter! cap is gonna be three!
