Carving a capital G in a block of cherry. It's fussy work with the grain running parallel to the letter. Enjoy!

We’ve moved! Sort of!
Hey folks - I just wanted to let y’all know that Shop Notes has, for various and sundry reasons, and after all sorts of weirdly technical heavy lifting (there was lots of talk about middleware and workarounds) moved back to my “main” site, kelloggfurniture.com. So, I will still post announcements and finished work here on Ye Olde Tumblrs, but day-to-day projects updates can be found over at http://www.kelloggfurniture.com/shop-notes/.
Thanks so much to the good people at BradGood.net for making this admittedly kind of screwy project happen, and thanks for following, everybody!

Done and done! "Curiouser & Curiouser," pair of lettercarved Osage Orange mirrors, 13"Ø. The lettering on each mirror is identical, but can only be read in full when the mirrors are facing one another. These mirrors are available for purchase either directly from me or through the Grovewood Gallery, Asheville, North Carolina. Thanks for following, everybody!

Last coat of oil- some people had asked about the texture left on the seat from the coopering plane. Hopefully you can kind of see it in this extra-fancy black and white picture. The idea was that it wouldn't really change the overall design of the bench, but it would be really nice to run your fingers over when you sat on it. #letsmakeabench

Duly submitted for #woodlibaryfriday : one of my favorite furniture books, which mainly focuses on the epic German cabinetmakers who settled into central Texas way back in the day. Lots of work from one of my all-time favorite makers, a Prussian gentleman named Johann Michael Jahn. If you don't know him, look him up- his work was (and is) incredible. #madeintexas

Cleaning up the top with a round-bottom/coopering plane. I thought it might be cool to have some texture on the seat? Who knows! #letsmakeabench

Joinery detail/poorly composed #handtoolthursday submission: detailing and polishing wedged through-tenons on the bench + a mess of tools being properly used and stored (in a heap, on a stool, out of focus.) #letsmakeabench
