broken fortune cookie - lyrics
V1
Hey where should i be going
I’m not really sure
but i know that everything will be okay
One day I will wake up
In a bedroom that I own
with the money that I have made
Chorus:
Maybe it’s a little stormy right now
right now don’t be afraid
it’s only temporary the sun’ll come out one day
i know that things could be better
but we’ll do with what we’ve made
life isn’t so easy so let’s live
Verse 2:
Today i went out to dinner
had a plate of pad thai
it came with a broken fortune cookie
and that’s okay it still had inside
one note saying this
“broke is only temporary
being poor is a state of mind”
Chorus:
And i thought life is rich with possibilities
tragedies so it seems
i’ve been blessed with so many things
but i still have room to dream
i’m only nineteen got a whole life ahead of me
so i’ll live and live purposefully happy and free
Outro:
ohhhh ohh ohhh ohh ohh ohhh oh
oohhhh ohhh ohhh ohh ohhh

Updates!!!
HI!
It’s 12:58 Friday, April 27. I can’t believe this journey is almost complete. My project is finished (!!!!) and I cannot be prouder with the end product. I’m still finishing up the website, but that work is very miniscule to the hours and hours of effort I have put into this project this semester.
the website is live. www.clarkie.info
I think using a website is a great way to showcase the entire process of the project as a whole. One can see the entire experience, as well as see what observations i found in my survey study led me to the songs I created.
This past week, I crunch-timed and made two songs, and they both add a new color to the entire ELEMENTS project.
I’m very excited to present my findings tomorrow and have Maryland Day visitors experience the project on Saturday.

As I was working on my third song, I’ve started figuring out my true process for writing and creating melodies is starting with a theme/phrase idea and a chord pattern.
For this specific song, I wanted to emulate a very typical/chainsmoker sounding/pop/edm song! I feel like dance breaks have become synonymous with pop music. At the time I was thinking about this song, I was working on a paper about library anxiety in college students. This phrase, library anxiety, struck me, as it deals a lot with how I’ve been feeling recently. All of this work has made me stressful and anxious, and feeling these anxieties each week adds up. I also wanted this song to show the social norms of college life, including parties and having to talk and be sociable with everyone 24/7. This also, metaphorically, in a sense is library anxiety. I also work at McKeldin late nights from 2am-5am, so libraries and anxiety are all up in my mind.
I made the melody and lyrics last night at midnight, and my roommate was asleep, so in order to remember my ideas, I had to document them in the bathroom! this is the chorus where I say “Tomorrow I bet that I’ll have library anxiety,” meaning that tonight I’m willing to forget about my stresses in college and party but tomorrow morning I’ll remember that same stress of “library anxiety.” I think it’s really cool to talk about these personal feelings of my tiredness and stress this semester.

Many catchy songs, I’ve realized, are minimalist, in nature. I’ve realized that it’s hard to produce songs in a minimalistic way. We strive to be complex but complexity does not equal quality.

I’m currently very inspired by the production and the writing in Billie Eilish’s “Bellyache.” As I’ve started to begin writing lyrics, I’ve found it somewhat hard to speak about how I personally feel about certain things in my life. This song, however, tells a story about Eilish being a murderer. While she’s definitely not a murderer in reality, she has created a fantasy to tell a story about her true feelings about someone or something. I think this is a really great idea, and I’d love to incorporate these writing and production styles in my own writing.

I’ve started to compose/produce different songs for my project. This audio of this video is from an advertisement jingle I’m working on. Advertisement jingles are designed to be stuck in your head, and what I have created mirrors the same ideas of an actual radio jingle.
I started with a melody that was fairly simple, and I played around with different instruments playing that melody, but I ultimately played the melody using a bass sound. Fun shakers and percussion help create feelings of happy and attract the listener, and the synth brass chords add an element of campiness that is plagued in many advertisements (especially like... those annoying car commercials).
I’m currently struggling to add lyrics and vocals to the track. I think I want this to be a car radio jingle, so I think it’d be cool to have dialogue as well as a jingle at the end.

This week, I’m personally inspired by this song. I grew up listening to this song, and at the time, and now, it felt so different to me. I really like how the instrumental is based off of one core “bar,” and the repetition of the instrumental allows me to remember this song and still get it stuck in my head ten years after it came out! My survey has been showing me that a lot of what’s new and current is getting stuck in people’s heads, and I find it really interesting when I got a response about a song that’s older than a decade.

this is so calming to look at, after having a really busy week. I’ve been really into collaging recently, and I think I want to incorporate this if my collection of music will have an album artwork.

Critical Response Process Feedback/Updates
I closed my survey earlier this week, and I’m happy to say that it was done 366 unique times. I’m really excited to dive deeper into this information. I really love working in data analysis, which I do a lot with my major, so this will be great to look at.
I’ve started working more on big themes, and I just want these songs to be fun and catchy. I’m excited to see how my survey results will affect the elements of catchiness, but I also want to draw heavily on my own ideas of “catchiness”.
Harold told me, during my advising meeting (which I did not fill out a report for.... very sorry, didn’t realize we had to fill out a separate form from our specific final learning agreeement), that maybe I should include a second survey to ask more in-depth questions about catchiness, but this survey was very successful and I think I have enough information to start making meaning out of people’s responses.
A couple nights ago, my friend Julie Le and I both discussed where we were at with our capstone projects. We used the Critical Response Process to exchange feedback, which helped us constructively and openly exchange ideas and opinions without coming off as opinionated or harsh. For statements of meeting, she really enjoyed my survey and told me that it will work well to collect observations. She neutrally asked me what my next step would be, and I told her that I wanted to work on song composition, as well as survey analysis. I asked her how I could make my presentation better, and she said to include example observations from the surveys. I decided to add a list of songs from people’s responses of what was stuck in their heads. She did not have any real statements of feedback, other than telling me to add more about the survey. For her capstone presentation, I really liked her concept of blackout poetry, added with visuals. It feels really fresh to me. I asked her if she was going to black-out the whole book, and she told me that she is planning on doing most of the right pages (since the left pages will bleed), but she will do something with added left pages. The whole book will be transformed, and I really like her concept!

Check-in
My project seems to be going well. I’ve had a really weird week mentally, but i’ve still found some time to work on my project. I’m currently finishing up my survey questionnaire about peoples’ music tastes and preferences, and I’m planning on sending it out via email and Google Form this coming weekend.
The current survey is as follows:
Do you like listening to music?
Where do you usually listen to music?
streaming on a phone/computer
listening to a physical CD
listening to the radio in the car
I only listen to records… I pride myself in indulging in the finer things that life brings me.
I use music to… (check all that apply)
influence my mood (to make me sadder or happier)
help me focus on school/studying
have background noise
What kind of genres of music do you tend to listen to?
Pop
Rap/Hip-Hop
Electronica/Dance
Indie/Alternative
Rock
Classical
Other (Please list)
Do you tend to pay more attention to lyrics or the instrumental of a song?
lyrics
instrumental
beat
it depends what song I’m listening to
Do you like current pop music? (i.e. Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Migos, Cardi B, Taylor Swift)
Yes
No
Think about a song you’ve listened to in the past week. What song stands out to you as memorable to you personally? (it can be anything! a song, an advertisement jingle, etc)
Why does this stand out to you?
it struck a chord with me
I thought it sounded cool
I like the lyrics of the song
I just heard this song a lot, and i began to really vibe with it
try no mc
Pick a song from this list of the most popular songs in the country (as of 2/4/18) that you personally enjoy
Perfect — Ed Sheeran
Havana — Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug
Rockstar — Post Malone feat. 21 Savage
Finesse — Bruno Mars & Cardi B
Bad at Love — Halsey
New Rules — Dua Lipa
Thunder — Imagine Dragons
No Limit — G-Eazy feat. Cardi B & A$AP Rocky
Too Good at Goodbyes — Sam Smith
I thought that these questions would help convey people’s music preferences, as well as what they deem “catchy.” I’m planning on dividing up these questions in two parts to elaborate more about preferences and trends I see from the first survey!

Final Learning Agreement
CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2018
Name: Clark Mitchell
Email: [email protected]
Advisor: Harold
Weekly Meeting Time: WED 5pm
Purpose/Mission Statement:
I hope to learn more about writing and producing music, as well as how different factors of a song help contribute to a song’s overall “catchiness.” I plan on releasing a collection of songs that effectively capture different factors of catchiness.
Learning Objectives:
1. I will create a survey to learn more about people’s trends in regards to their own music listening.
2. After gathering survey data, I tend to categorize similarities in people’s music listening, including different factors of catchiness, like overall subject or the production of a song.
3. Learning more about overall factors that help create earworms, I will begin to conceptualize, write, and produce songs that will embody certain characteristics of catchy songs.
4. I will release, as well as promote the project online for people to listen and to enjoy, and analyze any findings for ArtsFest.
Workshop Process:
I want to begin this process by conceptualizing my own music-listening habits. For the past year, I’ve been using a website called last.fm to further track what I listen to, and what music I’m drawn to. I will develop two or more unbiased surveys that track people’s trends with music listening, as well as try to find out what kind of music and what kind of song characteristics they prefer. Having two surveys, instead of one survey, will allow for a more in-depth analysis of what people like when they listen to music. It’s somewhat hard for people to have a sense of what they find catchy in a song, and creating a follow-up survey will help specify further what kind of music catches. I will also research about the psychology of the earworm, and see if that plays any factors in what deems a song catchy. After I analyze what I have found in the surveys, I will begin writing and creating broad concepts for each song. I will self-produce and record every song. When the project feels complete to me, I will release the work online, as well as promote the collection online and offline. I will present this body of work through a presentation at ArtsFest that tracks any broad findings and for people to listen to the project.
Resources:
Last.FM/Spotify – tracks my own music listening
GoogleForm – documents survey findings
MS Excel – plan to use this to put in every single person’s music trends and to see broad trends and concepts
Garageband/Logic/Audacity - music software to record and produce project
Soundcloud/Tumblr/Bandcamp – current websites to release music to the internet
Project Timeline:
JANUARY 2018 – APRIL 28 – CONCEPTUALIZE/WRITE/PRODUCE THE PROJECT. This project, to me, is breathing and living, and I personally do not want to hold myself to any deadlines. Since I started the proposal for this project, I have seen myself conceptualizing, writing at every step of the way; however, to make sure the project is finished to what I feel is complete by April 28, the following dates and deadlines will help benchmark what I feel will get this project ready by ArtsFest:
FEB 12 – Advising meeting with Harold
FEB 15 – Revise learning agreement, submit on ELMS
FEB 15 – Finish developing the first survey, release survey on Google Forms.
FEB 21/28 – present First Look at presentation during CPSA250, Wed 5pm
