$20M Picasso, $4M Banksy sales juice hot Art Basel Miami market

Banksy's "Charlie Brown" mural. Corbis via Getty Images Sales at Art Basel Miami Beach were boosted by a nearly $20 million Picasso sale — plus a key piece by British artist Banksy that went for $4 million at Art Miami. Art dealers reported a red-hot market, with gallerist Helly Nahmad selling Pablo Picasso’s “Mousquetaire et Femme a la Fleur,” 1967, for just under $20 million to an undisclosed buyer on opening day at Art Basel Miami Beach on Tuesday. At Art Miami, a work by British graffiti artist Banksy — “Charlie Brown” — sold for $4 million on opening day at Jay Rutland’s Maddox Gallery booth. Their collection of other Banksy pieces, including “Tank with Leopard on Target” — plus artworks by David Yarrow and George Condo — drew big crowds. Among the crush of rich collectors, art aficionados and advisors, celebrity buyers spotted this at the Miami art fairs this week included Leonardo DiCaprio, Randy Gerber, Pharrell Williams, Sofia Vergara and Channing Tatum. Meanwhile, gallery Hauser and Wirth said it had sold 18 artworks in the first few hours of the fair, ranging from a Roni Horn sculpture for $1.2 million to a $250,000 painting by Henry Taylor. And Pace Gallery reported over 30 sales of multiple works over $1 million on opening day including paintings by Beatriz Milhazes and Jeff Koons. Read the full article

UTA Prices $200M IPO For SPAC Targeting Gaming, Creator Economy

UTA Prices $200M IPO For SPAC Targeting Gaming, Creator Economy A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) backed by United Talent Agency has priced its initial public offering at $200 million, and plans to use that capital to pursue a company in the gaming, creator economy, and digital media sectors. The SPAC expects to begin trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker “UTAAU” Thursday. The SPAC, UTA Acquisition Corporation, is being led by former Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aimé, who is its chairman, alongside co-CEOs Clinton Foy, who is a general partner of venture capital at UTA, and Jamie Sharp, who was previously an executive at Google. Ophir Lupu, UTA’s head of video games, will be president of the SPAC. SPACs tend to succeed based on the relationships of their executives and board members, and UTA Acquisition has assembled some significant names for the SPAC’s board. Former CBS Entertainment and Microsoft executive Nancy Tellem will be a board member, as will Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and Beachbody Company chief strategy officer and former Legendary Entertainment exec Kathy Vrabeck. According to the company’s S-1 filing with the SEC, it intends to use the contacts and resources of UTA and its executives to find a suitable merger partner. As with most SPACs, shares will be sold at $10 each, with 20 million planned for the IPO. “The strategic landscape in our areas of focus is evolving rapidly, as the traditional value chain across creators, developers, publishers, distributors and other key constituents has experienced significant disruption,” the company writes in the filing. “We believe a number of underlying dynamics behind this disruption create a need for investment capital to fund growth and meet increased demand and that our management team is well-positioned to evaluate potential targets. We believe a number of these key trends will attract an expanding universe of content creators with whom we have differentiated access via the relationships of our management and our sponsor.” The company specifically said it would seek companies that have “compelling intellectual property and communities,” the “potential to leverage new technologies across multiple dimensions,” a proven leadership team, and “scale and global ambitions.” UTA has been active in the gaming, esports and creator economy areas as an agency, so the SPAC’s target focus isn’t exactly a huge leap. While the SPAC market has cooled somewhat since its peak last year, a number of high-profile entertainment figures are still exploring the space. A number of former CBS executives are in the market through their Argus Capital SPAC, and BuzzFeed and Faze Clan have signed deals to go public through SPAC mergers. Even former President Donald Trump is using a SPAC to launch a social network and streaming service. Read the full article

US detects first Omicron case in fully vaccinated traveller

Travellers queue at a check-in counter at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after several countries banned flights from South Africa. AFP (Omicron Case) WASHINGTON: The United States on Wednesday announced its first confirmed case of the Covid-19 Omicron Case variant had been detected in California, in a fully vaccinated traveller who had recently returned from South Africa and was recovering from mild symptoms. Top health official Anthony Fauci said authorities "knew it was just a matter of time" before the strain was found in the country, reminding Americans that vaccination, boosters and masking in indoor public settings remained the best way to stay protected. According to a statement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the person returned from South Africa on November 22, and their close contacts have all tested negative. Speaking to reporters, Fauci added that the patient tested positive on November 29 and that they had not received a booster, to the best of his knowledge. Some early press reports regarding the Omicron variant have suggested it might confer more mild illness, but Fauci cautioned reading too much into these until more hard data was available. "We feel good that this patient not only had mild symptoms, but actually the symptoms appear to be improving," he said. "But as we said, there's a lot of information that is now evolving out of countries like South Africa that have a much larger number of individuals" with the variant, he added. Such data should follow in the coming weeks and months. While the person involved was fully vaccinated, Fauci stressed a Covid booster remained a good idea because it raises the number of overall antibodies in a person's immune system, some of which will remain effective at stopping new variants. "Our experience with variants such as the Delta variant, is that even though the vaccine isn't specifically targeted to the Delta variant, when you get a high enough level of an immune response, you get spillover protection," he said. Fauci also defended the travel ban the US had placed on southern African countries, which UN chief Antonio Guterres has slammed as "unfair" and "ineffective." "We needed to buy some time to be able to prepare, understand what's going on," he said. "We wanted to make sure that we didn't all of a sudden say it's like anything else, don't worry about it, and then all of a sudden, something unfolds in front of you that you're really not prepared for. So we look at this as a temporary measure." To prepare for Omicron, the US is planning tougher testing and weighing quarantine requirements for international travellers arriving in the country, including taking a Covid-19 test one day prior to departure, the CDC said Wednesday. Suncity shuts VIP gaming rooms in Macau after CEO's arrest -sources

© Reuters. FILE PHOTO: A logo of Macau junket operator Suncity Group is seen at a gaming fair in Macau, China November 18, 2015. REUTERS/Bobby Yip/File Photo By Farah Master and Eduardo Baptista HONG KONG (Reuters) -Embattled gambling group Suncity Group Holdings has closed all of its VIP gaming rooms in Macau, the world's largest gambling hub, after the company's CEO was arrested, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation told Reuters. The shutting of the company's VIP rooms will result in a cut of around a third of its Macau headcount, said one of the sources, a senior casino executive who declined to be identified as the closure has not been publicly announced. Suncity Group did not respond to a request for comment. Its shares were suspended from trade on Wednesday, the second time in three days, pending what it said was the release of an announcement related to its VIP business. The news comes amid a broad investigation into Suncity's CEO Alvin Chau, who was arrested on Sunday over alleged links to cross-border gambling and money laundering. Chau is also the founder of Macau's biggest junket operator which brings in high rollers to play at casinos. Marking a watershed development for the sector, authorities are adopting a zero-tolerance approach to the promotion of gambling in mainland China where it is illegal and are seeking to rein in the flow of Chinese gambling-related funds into Macau and other gaming hubs - outflows that China last year deemed a national security risk. The closure of Suncity's gaming rooms has only exacerbated pain for Macau-listed casino stocks which have tumbled this week on the expected loss of business from Chau's junket business which is estimated to account for around a quarter of Macau's gaming revenues. Shares in Wynn Macau (OTC:) Ltd, which analysts say is the casino operator most reliant on Suncity's gaming rooms, have been particularly hard hit, sliding 8% on Wednesday to bring this week's losses to 18%. Declines for U.S. parent Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:) Ltd have been milder with its shares having declined 5% over Monday and Tuesday. Outside Macau, Bloomberry Resorts Corp, a popular casino destination for Chinese gamblers in the Philippines, tumbled 10% on Wednesday. Macau authorities have accused Chau and 10 others of using the former Portuguese colony as a base for an illegal "live web betting platform" in the Philippines that attracted mainland Chinese gamblers. A warrant for Chau's arrest was also issued on Friday by the mainland Chinese city of Wenzhou, accusing him of forming a junket agent network that helps citizens engage in gambling activities and setting up a company that helps gamblers make cross-border fund transfers. "The writing was on the wall already. But nothing was done in Macau until the Wenzhou police talked about it," the executive said. While Chau's junket operations, also called Suncity, are not part of the listed Suncity Group, they have previously been singled out by mainland China's state-run media, which said they harmed China's social order. A 2019 article by the Economic Information Daily, a unit of China's state news agency Xinhua, alleged that the annual amount of online betting on websites run by Suncity was more than 1 trillion yuan ($155 billion). Suncity has also not responded to a request for comment on that estimate. One of the sources told Reuters that Suncity operated VIP rooms in properties owned by all six of Macau's licensed casino operators - Wynn Macau, Sands China (OTC:), MGM China (OTC:), SJM Holdings (OTC:), Melco Resorts and Galaxy Entertainment. In 2019, Suncity operated up to 17 VIP gaming rooms in Macau and accounted for nearly half of the gambling hub's VIP market, the executive added. Melco Resorts said in an email to Reuters that Suncity had ceased operations at its City of Dreams and Studio City resorts. Wynn said in a statement the Suncity junket rooms at Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace suspended operations at midnight on Dec. 1. The other four casino operators have not responded to requests for comment. Suncity Group said this week that Chau intended to resign. Reuters efforts to contact Chau or his lawyer have been unsuccessful. Suncity Group's stock plunged 48% on Tuesday to a record low, valuing it at HK$880 million ($113 million). Suncity shuts VIP gaming rooms in Macau after CEO's arrest -sources Read the full article

Why Repentant Boko Haram Insurgents Won’t Be Prosecuted

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has posited the reason repentant Boko Haram insurgents won’t be prosecuted by the state.
According to Zulum, insurgents will not stand prosecution in order to discourage others from coming forward to lay up their arms. Zulum made the disclosure in his address at the presentation of the 2022 budget at the State Assembly. He said; “Mr. Speaker, Honourable Members, we need Allah’s guidance and the utmost wisdom to work for an end to the crisis facing our dear state. “Prosecuting all the criminals (insurgents) would have been most appropriate but if we insist on it, we would discourage others out there that are willing to lay down their arms. “The terrorists’ ranks could swell and our innocent fellow citizens, particularly those in local government areas, could become more vulnerable to attacks and abductions.” Zulum further explained that no insurgents who submitted to the military have been reincorporated into society, the Governor, because de-radicalization efforts do not mean that an insurgent “may kill today, surrender tomorrow, and walk away scot-free.” Those ready to surrender must now stop attacking citizens, security agents, and facilities. He added; “However, we will never forget the feelings of those who have lost loved ones, lost their homes, lost their communities and lost their means of livelihood. “We must approach our peace-building efforts with extreme caution by working in line with the 16 resolutions reached on August 29, 2021, when we convened a multi-stakeholder security town-hall meeting, which critically reviewed and adopted guidelines for us to approach the surrender of insurgents.” Repentant Boko Haram Members Source:Ghgossip.com Read the full article

LeBron James Enters NBA Virus 'Health and Safety Protocols,' Skips Tuesday Night Game

Fans hoping to see LeBron James face off against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday were left wanting when the NBA announced the star Laker had entered “health and safety protocols.” Several sources told ESPN that James will “miss several games” with the Los Angeles Lakers due to the protocols, which may or may not have stemmed from a positive coronavirus test. The exact cause of James’s removal was not made known. According to current NBA mandates, a player must isolate for ten days if they test positive for the coronavirus. “After that period, a player must undergo a cardiac screening and reconditioning in order to be cleared to return to the court,” noted ESPN. “A player who tests positive could also clear protocol by returning two negative PCR tests within a 24-hour period.” LeBron James — who the Lakers are listing in health and safety protocols — is expected to miss several games, source tells ESPN. Players with positive Covid cases must be out a minimum of 10 days. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) December 1, 2021 This past September, LeBron claimed he was vaccinated from the coronavirus; however, as the New York Times noted at the time, he previously evaded several questions about his vaccination status and did not say which vaccine he received or the exact number of shots. “I think everyone has their own choice to do what they feel is right for themselves and their family,” James said. “I know that I was very skeptical about it all, but after doing my research and things of that nature, I felt like it was best suited for not only me but for my family and my friends, and that’s why I decided to do it.” James also said he would not use his massive platform to promote the vaccines. “We’re talking about individuals’ bodies,” he said. “We’re not talking about something that’s political or racism or police brutality and things of that nature.” “So I don’t feel like for me personally that I should get involved in what other people should do for their bodies and their livelihoods,” he added.

Cox/Getty Images) Lakers coach Frank Vogel said Talen Horton-Tucker will start in James’s place until his star player returns. “Obviously it’s a huge loss,” Vogel said prior to Tuesday’s game. “It’s disappointing. We just want the best for him right now. That’s where our thoughts are. And we have a next-man-up mindset.” “Hopefully this is something that’s short term,” Vogel added. “We’ll see.” Vogel said he arranged for James to travel from Sacramento back to Los Angeles as of Tuesday. His absence comes after he “missed 11 of the Lakers’ 22 games coming into Tuesday because of injuries and a suspension,” according to ESPN. “We know he wants to be in there every night,” Vogel said. “More than anybody in the league, probably.” Vogel added that he has spoken with Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka about recommending coronavirus booster shots for players. “We met early in the season or right around the day or two of that recommendation,” Vogel said. “Just to encourage and recommend the booster shot and the values that come with it.” LeBron James Covid Read the full article

Critic’s Notebook: Louis Vuitton’s Virgil Abloh Tribute Sparked Gamut of Emotions for Star-Studded Front Row

Only one element marred the Louis Vuitton's men’s show on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Miami Marine Stadium, a moment that unfortunately felt decidedly inappropriate to some guests — indeed, to employ the word used by one high-profile fashion editor, it veered into “offensive.” But more on that later. It’s not too big a leap to arrive at such an opinion, especially as Tuesday night’s focus was clear: to honor Virgil Abloh in a show produced less than 48 hours after the artistic director’s death on Sunday, Nov. 28, from a rare form of cancer. Fashion presentations during Art Basel Miami Beach tend to be highly celebratory events, designed to nurture relationships with top clients while burnishing the brand with a high-profile showing of its latest offerings. As roughly 1,500 guests waited to depart by boat at a marina near downtown Miami, the event exhibited all signs that it would adhere to this well-established formula, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres served to attendees dressed head-to-toe in their Louis Vuitton-logo finest. Party yachts then ferried everyone out to Miami Marine Stadium, an open-air venue on Virginia Key; built in 1963, the once-popular site has been at the center of redevelopment efforts for more than seven years. Now awash in colorful graffiti, the concrete stadium ultimately proved to be a fitting backdrop for Abloh’s Spring 2022 menswear collection, the juxtaposition of an architectural relic against fashion that feels exceedingly modern. Even that idea seemed expected, an old-meets-new strategy that’s often explored by tradition-centric fashion houses.

Spring Summer 2022 Men Spin Off Show © Louis Vuitton – All rights reserved The high-wattage audience likewise befitted a hot-ticket Art Basel event, from Kim Kardashian West and Kayne West, with daughter North sitting between them, to Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Joe Jonas, Maluma and Bella Hadid. That’s far from an unusual front row for a Louis Vuitton show, but make no mistake: They were there to honor Abloh. “There’s a lot of emotions,” Williams told The Hollywood Reporter. “What he built and what he put together is amazing.” Brother Vellies creative director Aurora James agreed. “When we talk about fashion, we often think about the idea of ‘garments,’ but it was so much more than garments to Virgil,” she said. “It was really about culture, about identity, about the youth. He also made a lot of people feel seen; for him, it was always ‘us’ and ‘we,’ never ‘I,’ and that’s really important. I’ve also never seen anyone be able to output so much incredible work. It was mind-blowing. I’m honored to be here.” Everyone settled into their seats as the sunset transitioned the sky to an inky shade of indigo — and that’s when a seismic shift in the night occurred, from celebratory to somber. “This is the hardest speech I have ever given,” Michael Burke, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO, told the now-silent audience. “The deeply moving show we are about to see was born out of an idea Virgil first discussed with me three years ago. It was based around the traditional coming-of-age narrative — of course, being Virgil, he spun and recontextualized the concept for the 21st century, and in doing so, he was expressing his own unique talents and vision. This idea of coming of age was important to Virgil, because inspiring and empowering younger generations defined who he was. He used the platform he had to break boundaries and to open doors, to shed light on his creative passions — art, design, music and, of course, fashion — so that everybody could see inside, not only to dream of being part of that world, but to also to find ways to make that dream a reality. Virgil showed them the way.”
From the Spring 2022 collection, Virgil Abloh’s Monogram-print jacket in a neon ombré. Spring Summer 2022 Men Spin Off Show © Louis Vuitton – All rights reserved His voice heavy with emotion, Burke told of meeting Abloh, Kanye West’s creative partner at the time, 15 years ago in Tokyo and inviting them both to intern at Fendi in Rome, his eye immediately impressed by Abloh’s skills and vision. “When the time came, Virgil was not looking for the limelight, but the limelight found him,” Burke added of Abloh’s ascension to artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections in 2018, the first Black designer to hold the position. “He often mentioned to me how he felt a deep connection to Louis Vuitton, the man, who walked to Paris in search of a better life and disrupted the world with his ideas … during one of the many lengthy conversations Virgil and I used to have, he told me, ‘I’m doing now what Monsieur Vuitton would have done.’ “ Then, before the first model hit the runway, we heard Abloh’s voice once more, noting that his key inspiration for the collection was the idea of recapturing childhood, a time when it’s easier for children to embrace “the sense of wonderment, to stop using their mind and start using their imagination.” The clothes that followed perfectly expressed that feeling, a parade of streetwear meets exquisite tailoring, of knit jerseys boldly emblazoned with the Vuitton name in bright neon tones to long coats in primary colors embellished with artful interpretations of the house’s iconic Monogram and Damier prints. Abloh previously revealed most of this collection in a digital presentation in June, but this in-person event, featuring 10 never-before-seen looks exclusive to a just-debuted men’s store in Miami’s Design District, was a sublime reminder of the power of the live fashion show, replete with layers of meaning and expressing one man’s thoughtful interpretation of our current life and culture.
Virgil Abloh’s modern take on Louis Vuitton’s checkerboard Damier print. Spring Summer 2022 Men Spin Off Show © Louis Vuitton – All rights reserved Following the traditional finale carousel of models — a group that included Kid Cudi, A$AP Nast and Offset — fireworks in red and white lit up the night sky. Burke also mentioned that Abloh had been intimately involved in every detail of the event’s planning, and this particular moment of celebrating the man and his spirit in such a manner ultimately proved to be profoundly moving for many in the audience, who hugged each other and wept as they watched. A walk to the post-show gathering not only revealed a towering statue of Abloh, a Louis Vuitton-embossed portfolio under his arm, but also further insight into the depth of the night’s details, as one bartender explained why Champagne was not being served: “Champagne felt a little too celebratory for what tonight is about,” he said. (Soon after the runway presentation, sister brand Givenchy and its creative director, Matthew Williams, announced they were canceling their Wednesday evening Art Basel event out of respect for Abloh’s legacy.)
A colorful raincoat from Virgil Abloh’s Spring 2022 menswear collection for Louis Vuitton. Spring Summer 2022 Men Spin Off Show © Louis Vuitton – All rights reserved The evening would have been a perfect, sublime tribute to a game-changing artist — if not for the one inappropriate element, quietly condemned by a number of guests both on and off the record. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were among those in attendance Tuesday evening, and several in the crowd found the controversial couple’s presence to be an unhappy surprise. L’Officiel global chief creative officer Stefano Tonchi said he was informed of their presence by artist friends who first spotted them on one of the boats traveling to Virginia Key. “They felt it was offensive, especially in a place where we are celebrating diversity and coming together,” Tonchi said. “I’m not happy about it, and I’m not sure how it happened, because we really are here to celebrate Virgil and what he meant to fashion.” Indeed, it felt undeniably inappropriate to spot the couple at a fashion event devoted to honoring a man who put diversity and inclusion front and center in everything he created. It was a jarring moment that took attendees out of the spirit of the event — imagine viewing a piece of quiet, respectful theater, only to experience someone arriving unexpectedly so they can loudly ring a clanging, discordant bell. Abloh ultimately was more than deserving of a conflict-free tribute, and the attendance of a couple who sparked controversy throughout all four years of their time in the White House simply shouldn’t have happened. It was only out of respect for Abloh and the event that direct confrontations didn’t happen; only poorly mannered people cause trouble at a memorial service, after all. Instead, the night was reserved for tears and smiles, the latter occurring when a drone presentation during the post-show gathering spelled out the event’s singular enduring message: “Virgil was here.” Read the full article

Halle Berry has celebrated the success of her new film, Bruised, by doing a victory dance. The 55-year-old posted a video to social media on Tuesday of her dancing to H.E.R.'s latest single, Automatic Woman, which was featured on the film's soundtrack. "When you find out the night before that your film is #1 in the U.S. and #2 globally and you start dranking to celebrate ... this is bound to happen. #tipsy #bruisedsoundtrack (sic)," the star captioned the video of her dancing in a black jumpsuit. Berry stars in the sports drama, which follows an MMA fighter's transformation in her personal and professional life. After the feature charted at number one on Netflix in 71 countries, Variety reported that the actress signed a multi-picture deal with the streamer to produce more films in the future. "My directorial debut, 'Bruised,' was a labor of love and I knew that Scott and Ted would treat it with great care," the actress said of Netflix bosses Scott Stuber and Ted Sarandos in a statement. "The Netflix team has not only been collaborative and creative, but extremely passionate and a delight to work with. I am beyond grateful for the partnership and look forward to telling more stories together." Several celebrity friends celebrated with Berry in the comments, including Niecy Nash, who commented that she was "so proud" of her and Kelly Rowland, who wrote, "THATS RIGHY (sic) GIRLLLL CELEBRATE!!"
