New Venue, Same Party
Growing tired of the endless scrolling required on this tumblr聽and hoping for something bigger and better, I have ventured to Word Press. 聽The content of my random musings will remain the same but I hope this offers a better viewing experience. The top right square icon on the new blog expands out into a menu, making reviewing old posts easier. 聽
We will see how it goes...

Shoes are made for walking... and then there are Birkenstocks. 聽Only the Germans could make a shoe a podiatrist鈥檚 dream then accidentally turn it into a fashion trend. 聽It is beginning to seem as if anything can gain a veritable cult following in the fashion world so long as it survives a few decades of business. 聽Just cite the heritage of a brand and any cumbersome designs can be excused. 聽
On that note, The New Yorker put out a fantastic piece exploring the history and corporate structure of Birkenstock, as well as detailing future brand expansions. 聽Expect mattresses and socks to soon fill out your Birkenstock lifestyle. 聽
(The image sources the beginning of Birkenstock鈥檚 fashionable evolution. 聽Kate Moss wore them for a 1990s photoshoot with Corinne Day). 聽

"I have no personality. 聽Perhaps I have three" - Lagerfeld
I have written about Karl Lagerfeld before and I do not want to dull you with repetition... But his quotes are too good to pass up. 聽Cognitive dissonance abounds. 聽
Here is the rather ungainly link to the article:

Art and the Art of Wearing all your Coats at Once
The East Coast has been hit with all the cold and snowy weather to have ever escaped the Arctic... 聽Thankfully, DC has escaped the worst of it, but spring will still be a welcomed change whenever it does come. 聽I have adopted the old-fashioned trend of wearing fur on the coldest of days. 聽The purple rabbit coat I bought in Seattle has become indispensable, whether under two coats and with a sweater or, on the warmer days, just by itself. 聽PETA and animal rights activists certainly have a point, but its hard to deny the warmth of animal fur. 聽The warmth differs from even the thickest of polar fleeces or other synthetic winter wear. 聽I don't want to get caught up in the debate and will cop out of the argument by saying I bought it second hand. 聽Perhaps that lessens the moral quandary? 聽 聽 聽聽
On a different note, my figure drawing class has become one of my favorite courses (of only three total...). 聽I love to layer all the lines on top of each other, making something out of chaos. 聽聽

Video
youtube
Here is some homework. 聽Well actually this was my homework that i have already completed, so no worries. 聽But I was enthralled by these short videos my Figure Drawing professor sent around. 聽
I believe that Kehinde WIley has a portrait at the Seattle Art Museum, though I could be mistaken. 聽Perhaps it is the National Gallery here in DC. 聽Regardless, I love the vibrant nature of the paintings and how Wiley makes portraiture so relevant. 聽I remember seeing his work for the first time and being amazed that portraits didn't have to be of old white men, more often than not in a powdered wig. 聽
The second video (in link below) is of Robert Longo and discusses his work now and in the 80s. 聽The evolution of his art and his discussion of maintaining relevancy as an artist is a great counterpoint to Wiley's immediacy. 聽

The Return of Normal Glasses聽
Not sure if it is just me hiding under a rock, but Google Glass has been terminated. 聽I only found this out per the NYTimes article that gave a rather dramatic retelling of the glasses ascension and ultimate failure. 聽
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/05/style/why-google-glass-broke.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=mini-moth庐ion=top-stories-below&WT.nav=top-stories-below
The inclusion of Diane von Furstenberg and Vogue made them almost a verifiable fashion accessory. But, it is hard for me to begin to imagine the possible usage of them and harder still to see them as part of my daily wardrobe. 聽I had enough trouble adapting to eyeglasses when I first got them and they still slide down my nose too often. 聽Though maybe one day, wearable technology will be like the iPad; something we first ridiculed for having no potential use, then fervently adopted as the most versatile technology to have ever graced our presence? 聽Maybe we will discover some as-of-yet unknown need that needs solving?聽

I found this a hilarious juxtaposition of my interests. 聽Who better to decide the next season's "It" bag than the president himself? 聽While the bag is not my favorite, the picture captures the irony of things being deemed 'it.'聽
