Yo, white people, ALL OF US can do better. Actually READ the post. It’s all true. Sociologically and Anthropologically. I don’t think it’s truly necessary for me to say that, but I want to avoid the people that wish to defend their poor behavior despite what side of the fence the white person is on. Allies help by AMPLIFYING THE VOICE OF THE MARGINALIZED, DISENFRANCHISED, and DISCRIMINATED. Allies have a few SIMPLE FUCKING JOBS: (1) Fucking Listen. (2) Fucking shut up and seriously listen. If this isn’t your culture or practice that is threatened then just fucking listen. (3) Fucking do the background work so those with an honest to fuck actual voice and experience in the fight can be out, loud, and available to address concerns.

Allies, we help set up, make shit, and call out and stand between aggressors and our family/friends. We don’t confront the issue head on publicly unless we have done the above jobs, and our friends/family that are affected by the discrimination give us an okay. Obviously, the group you are an ally for may need you to do other things locally. Respect. On a social media level I show SOLIDARITY by posting original posts and images that call out racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. I, however, do not speak on behalf of marginalized groups UNLESS I belong to it (for example, I’m queer so I can speak up for general LGBTQIA+ rights because they effect me. However, I do not know the experience of LGBTQIA+ People of Color, so I support them, show solidarity, and I keep my mouth shut so they can use their own voices to tell the world their experiences.

The conversation surrounding cultural appropriation has been so severely mutilated by white “allies” that the original intention behind that conversation has become almost unrecognizable in most social contexts.
