Shoji Mizuno, a developer/designer/director for Bomberman, passes away

Yesterday morning brought sad news to bomberfandom, when a blog post from former Hudson Soft executive Toshiyuki Takahashi (”Meijin Takahashi”) announced the passing of Shoji Mizuno, one of his colleagues from Hudson. Mizuno, who worked as a game developer, artist, and art director, was essentially responsible for (among other things) “modernizing” Bomberman’s look from his awkward NES days, starting with Super Bomberman 2.

Here’s a quick translation of the blog post, done by Bomber D. Rufi:

I was just informed that Shoji Mizuno, who I worked with at Hudson, has passed away.

Mr. Mizuno was a designer in charge of graphical work at Hudson. I’m sure everyone knows most of the titles he worked on… But he was especially involved in the second half of Bomberman Jetters and Beyblade, and even after [those properties] were turned into anime series, he did work on the storyboards and plot/world building as well as character design.

He was even younger than me…

Mizuno was specifically credited as a creative director and a character concept artist for Bomberman Jetters.

Note that – although it wasn’t mentioned in the above blog post for some reason – Mizuno’s name was also prominently attached to the Bakugaiden series. He and fellow Hudson Soft game designer Shigeki Fujiwara were credited with the original character concepts for Bakugaiden IV, while the two of them were credited for the overall concept of Bakugaiden V (along with Mikitoshi Amano from Takara Tomy).

Gamasutra has an obituary for Mizuno. Ragey has a translated interview with Mizuno and game designer Shigeki Fujiwara where the two talk about the basis of Bomberman’s design and how/why it was changed to be what it is now. Twitter user rurarbou_new, who appears to be a current designer for the Bomberman series if their bio is any indication, has posted two production pieces from Mizuno: one features some concept sketches for Bomberman Generation, or at least for some kind of Bomberman game for Gamecube, and the other is what looks to be a promotional art concept for a game that I don’t immediately recognize. They’ve also posted a picture of a package featuring a sketch from Mizuno as recently as 2016.

Reminder. If you’re rping a canon character and feeling insecure about your writing, or fearing replacement, simply remember that your muse is not just a duplicate. No one else will be able to breathe life into that character the way you do. No one else will feel the exact way you feel about your muse. There will be people who value your muse and never stop writing with you no matter what. There will be people who appreciate your portrayal, no matter how many other versions are out there. Always remember why you made your blog. Never let anyone or anything cast your passion out of your heart !!

Starter for fiendishbombers (PRIVATE)

Twenty years.  It has been over twenty years since the last time he has seen his Fiendish Bombers.  Some might ask where Terrorin has been in two decades?  Some say he went into hiding, some rumored he's been locked in a solitary confinement, and most people say he's committed some of the biggest heists thanks to his time powers.  The day has come that he would travel back to Planet Bomber to reunite with the criminals he freed twenty years from the penitary.

"YOUR WILL ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION SHORTLY." the GPS on Terrorin's spaceship would announce.  The emperor nodded, setting in the coordinates to slowly land at the hideout.  The time lord was starting to question how the Fiendish Bombers would react to seeing their leader once again.  Would it be a good reunion?  Or would it be the other way and be a bittersweet reunion?  His thoughts would come to a sudden halt as his ship landed at the Fiendish Bomber's hideout.  Terrorin shut off the the ship's engine as the side door would open up.  He would step out of it and approach the front door, walking rather gracefully up the steps.  Clearing his throat, he would knock on the door three times.

"Dammit.. I probably have a high bounty here on Planet Bomber.  It's just only a matter of time, but that doesn't matter.  Once I get the Fiendish Bombers reunited, we'll be an unstoppable crime force here once again."  Terrorin thought to himself, folding his hands together.

New Super Bomberman R characters 

Konami have announced a future update to Super Bomberman R adding a new ‘Grand Prix’ mode allowing for 3-on-3 battles, a new ‘Crystal’ rule which sounds similar to ‘Rainmaker’ in Splatoon plus three new Bombers: ‘Reiko Hinomoto Bomber’ (from Rumble Roses) and ‘Anubis Bomber’ and ‘Jehuty Bomber’ (both from Zone of the Enders). A Super Bomberman R soundtrack is also planned for December release.

((Hey guys, mun here! Lately you might have noticed a lack of posts and blog updating, but there have been so many things to do recently. First, I have a part-time job and I work about 8 hours every 3-4 days, so it's been tiring. Second, I'm trying to finish up an online course which I am despising so much, but it's the last week. Finally, I've been trying to work on two cosplays: one for my boyfriend and one for myself. We're going to be cosplaying Bomberman and Brain/Phantom Bomber for a comic con next week! So please understand, I miss y'all and hopefully things will start to clear up next week.))
