Imagine being M'rasha. Oblivion is so wild for her
Your parents die when you're 13 because they were legionnaires and the empire is trying to get every province in Tamriel under it's thumb. Your grandma comes all the way from Elsweyer to raise you and you're suddenly extremely poor so you get good with the bow your mother had shown you. The local farmer even pays you to watch his sheep at night. Once, you put down a few rabid wolves. Your arrows kill monsters. His son is your childhood sweetheart but he starts getting a big head about influence and power. You warn him about his new friends in the mages' guild but he doesn't listen. The first time you see a daedra is also the first time you kill one. Martin and those idiots got in over their heads. Your arrows kill monsters.
You and him don’t talk as much after that. He turns to the divines and you want to join the legion but gran says no so you become a guard instead. It’s going well until you hear some rumors that the count is stealing from his citizens - has been for years. You try to investigate but get met with a wall. The Gray Fox himself reaches out. The beggars know when someone’s on their side. You do find the evidence, but your involvement with the guild is also discovered. You lose your job and it gets brushed under the rug. You’re run out of town. Anvil it is, then - until a few months later when you get the news. Kvatch has been attacked. Overrun by daedra.
You go home. What’s left of it. Almost everyone is dead; an entire city reduced to a few dozen. The sky is blood red and your former guard captain can’t even spit at your feet when he sees you because at least someone else from home is alive. The second time you see daedra is when they’re scurrying over the rubble like roaches, pouring out from a frayed thread in reality. The gate must be closed so you do it. It’s hellish and frightening but your arrows kill monsters and your quick hands tear the sigil stone from its anchor. You reach the chapel and the farm boy - now a priest - is there. He's alive. The world feels like it's ending but at least something from home is still standing. You're both so overjoyed that it distracts Martin from comforting the bosmer man he was speaking to. A traveler, you learn, who somehow managed to get to the chapel and is in shock by the carnage he's seen. You say you closed the gate but whats left of the horde needs to be cleared out if you have any hope of getting the survivors to safety. The stranger offers to help you take your home back, and he does. Kvatch is ruined but anyone who could be saved is safe. You stick close to Martin and the stranger finally admits why he was in Kvatch. Sent by Jauffree and sent by the Emperor - Martin is the heir. He's injured but still goes with you to Chorrol and you're attacked by cultists. The amulet Martin needs was stolen - the secret pocket of Blades agents having been compromised. The stranger is mortally wounded in the attack but you've seen too much death lately and he's helped you get this far so you and Martin both do everything you can to keep him breathing. He will live. He's odd but you like him. You like the blade that healed him up, too. Plans get made. Next moves. Together the three of you will close Oblivion gates. Fight off daedra. Uncover plots. Soak your feet in the streams of Cheydinhal and bunker down in tents in the wilderness and get drunk as you stop by inns on your way to save the world. Nothing like a crisis to bring people together. You tell the future emperor of Tamriel that he's always going to be the same scruffy farm boy in your eyes. He tells you he's in love with you.
You're all a breath away from a happy ending. But you get the amulet too late. The barrier breaks. Martin apologizes for breaking your heart one last time and you're starting to get a horrible inkling that he knew something would go wrong. A few months later your friend, who grew so painfully distant after Martin died, disappears. Leaves an apology note behind saying he's going to close another door to Oblivion in the Niben Bay. Says he's sorry because it's all his fault. The blade leaps to his defense and it only twists the knife deeper - all three of them were keeping this secret from you. The stranger from Kvatch was the one to give the amulet away. He planned your demises so many times and had a change of heart but you're too beside yourself to really think about "sorry". You go after him because he's right at least that the door needs to be closed. And you want him to look you in the eye at least once. And you're also afraid of losing him or the blade like you lost Martin but each hour makes you only feel more sick as you realize Martin's fate was sealed as soon as he dropped the amulet into Jauffre's hands. Your life was forfeit in his eyes and the only reason why he didn't kill at Kvatch was because he was too weak to summon the dagger to stab you with. You've called him brother - because after closing so many gates to hell what else could he have been? He killed three legionaries that were helping you at the siege. You pierced his ears for him. Braided his hair when he was unconscious from bloodloss. His cult destroyed your life. Murdered your friends. He's repaired your bow and sword so many times. Made sure your arrows were sharp.
You go into another daedric realm and fashion arrows from the bones of a beast. Like-hurts-like, according to the hunter that tells you this secret. Eventually you all find each other and reunite - the trio that couldn't stop the end of the third era. The blade is trying to assure the murderer that he has a life ahead of him. They have a life ahead of them. And maybe that could be true. They're both in love and have a home to go back to.
You don't.
After the gatekeeper's death she still has one bone arrow left. Why wouldn't she notch it? Her arrows kill monsters.

Martin Septim, sleep deprived, stressing out over his city being destroyed, suddenly inheriting the entire continent, being asked to translate an entire book from a language he hasn't read since lore-friendly high school, in imminent and explicit danger at almost all times, his only living friends being an ex-con who can jump four times their height and Jauffre "Sock-Drawer" Bladesmaster: what's that Me, affixing a large heavy sword to the chandelier directly above him by one horse hair: ignore me.

my favorite genre of fictional character is like "i am terrifying to almost everyone, i'm very good at killing, i can endure anything, i've become exceptionally good at playing into my reputation, and if you try to give me positive social interaction i will react with confusion and cower in a corner like an abused animal. and i may try to shoot you. but there is also a chance i may imprint on you like a feral dog receiving its first loving touch! good luck."

kissing through a knights helm and sucking the strap are ontologically quite similar, in that you CAN really feel it, as long as you are Pure Of Heart
